"What Was I Made For?" is easily one of the most breathtaking ballads of all time. The song was written by Eilish after seeing a rough cut of the
Barbie film. She said she was wholly inspired by the film to write from Barbie's perspective - as opposed to writing about herself - and found that it was a breakthrough for a brief period of writer's block. "What Was I Made For?" is the emotional centrefold for the
Barbie film, with the track playing during one of the most emotionally evocative scenes in the film, where Barbie realises she is free to choose her own identity.
I try not to think about her age too much because seeing how much she's done with her life so far when she's only 22 throws me off and makes me question my own existence, but I think it just speaks to her maturity today. It's wild to think where she started and where is now and how she manages to both create these bangers like "Happier Than Ever", "bad guy", "you should see me in a crown", etc. to these incredibly touching and powerful soft moments like "Ocean Eyes", "Your Power", "everything i wanted", etc. She's really in a league of her own.
As a soundtrack song, it's perfect. It totally nails the emotional tone of the film and wonderfully soundtracks the scene it is used in. As a standalone song, it's even better. It is this devastating yet hopeful ballad about our place in the world. I have a tendency to write a lot about myself in some of these write-ups - I tend to go on and on about how I relate to these songs and why I love them. For once, I won't be going into much detail but this is a song that
really struck a chord with me. I tend to get lost in the mess of everything that I sometimes forget to just stop repressing emotions and take a moment to just... feel everything around me and "centre myself.gif". I listen to this song and immediately enter that state where I can just let it all out.
Yes, I did cry while watching the
Barbie movie. What are you gonna do about it? Are you going to report me? Are you gonna arrest me?
Anyways!
I can't write about "What Was I Made For?" without bringing up this iconic queen. There was a point of last year when my entire TikTok were just "ALTHOUGHHH ENJOYMENTTT" videos. May she rest in peace.
"What Was I Made For?" was a big hit. It peaked at number one in several countries, including the United Kingdom after battling Dua Lipa for it by releasing enough cassettes to make Greta Thunberg faint. The song was also a critical success being nominated for five Grammys and landing two of those, including Song of the Year. Its win for Song of the Year became the first time that a soundtrack song won the prestigious award since Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On". Not bad company to be around, huh?
I tend to just smack about any performance I find at the end of my write-ups without listening to them more than once because I know none of you will bother checking them out but for this song... Man, I urge you to check these out. Billie sounds excellent and her delivery of the track is outstanding.
