BIG POP GIRLS 2024

As we all know, 2024 was a landmark year with releases from practically everyone important in pop music. We had that weird, but exciting period between March and April where it felt that every single artist possible wanted to drop an album. Throughout the summer, we also saw the rise of several new voices - some of which have been trying for years to reach BPG status. It was an abundant year with inarguably some of the best material of their catalogues. I don't know about you, but I genuinely got something out of almost every major album released this year. To put it simply, I was left with an insane amount of choices with this rate. I tried many combinations and ideas of how to get around the sheer amount of material, but ultimately, I felt that the puzzle would never be complete if any album were left out. With this in mind, we decided to throw everything at this rate. Let's look at the good and bad of 2024, together.

Due to the sheer scope and quality of the material here, I simply could not do this rate justice by myself. Indeed, this year sees four host taking over the BIG POP GIRLS rate for the first time. This year sees the arrival of @Ensnare who approached me enthusiastically about working together on this even before 2023 had begun its results. He has been working on all of the fantastic graphics you have seen so far. BPG24 also sees the return of the loveable duo that made this rate be what it is today, @RJF and @Laura Vanderbooben, who were incredibly eager to get back to work. I’m so, so excited to be working with this incredible team and I cannot wait for you to see what we have in store. With eight albums and four hosts, the way we’re doing it is fairly simple: each of us gets two albums, one of an “established” pop girl and another of a “newcomer”. The rules aren't so strict, of course.

With all that said...
It is, with great honour, that I welcome you to the BIG POP GIRLS 2024 rate.

Stepping up to the plate for my first ever BPG co-hosting slot, and I've thrown myself distinctly in at the deep end on what will likely be the biggest BPG rate we'll... ever see? So, please, make good choices. Thankfully, I have a kind thoughtful motley support network of fellow deranged forum members who, like me, fancied torpedoing all of their spare time at the top of 2025. The wonderful @aux, who has truly earned themselves a genuinely exciting rate to host after the barren landscape of last year, and... well, if you haven't managed to figure out who else from the monstrosity of an avatar amalgamation posted in Random Thoughts, you've a) clearly been living under a rock, b) skipped over the lovely opening post from @aux and c) will find out in just a second.

I'll be your elimination representative for two of the finest albums 2024 had to offer. Hold on to your cowboy hat and the lacy black pair with the little bows - it's about to go down.

Charli xcx - Brat (The Definitive Edition)

075679666130.jpg

Kicking things off with what's probably quite a surprising inclusion for many of you - it's Charli xcx! Oh, wait... I'm forgetting something. Ah, yes. This little album was the one that changed everything for Charli last summer, and its momentum carried its way throughout the remainder of the year, becoming one of the most unmistakeable pop culture tentpoles of 2024. Charli's previous appearance in BPG saw her crashing (...) out at a respectable #13 position, but can she go further this time around with the critically-acclaimed Brat?

Because there are essentially three variations of Brat (standard, deluxe, remixes), I've conferred with my co-hosts and have settled on the following inclusions:

360
Club classics
Sympathy is a knife
I might say something stupid
Talk talk
Von dutch
Everything is romantic
Rewind
So I
Girl, so confusing featuring lorde
Apple
B2b
Mean girls
I think about it all the time
365
Hello goodbye
Guess featuring billie eilish
Spring Breakers

Note that Girl so confusing and Guess have been replaced by their remixes, which have settled as what is generally regarded as their definitive versions.

Beyoncé - COWBOY CARTER

196871853729.jpg

Where does one go after dropping one of the most critically-acclaimed, beloved albums of your career, and setting yourself up for an exceptionally challenging feat of maintaining such an impeccable high standard across an ambitious three-album project, highlighting and diving into multiple, disparate, important genres of music? Well, given the hyper-specific nature of that very predicament, you undoubtedly won't be surprised that it's the recently Billboard-crowned Greatest Popstar of the 21st Century, Beyoncé.

And what did she do? Well, she followed up with an equally critically-acclaimed, fan-beloved album that bent the mind, challenged perceptions, and netted her a slew of new achievements and records. Business as usual then!

But after absolutely destroying BPG 2022 with forum favourite, Renaissance (seriously, she didn't lose a track until #33 and claimed the entire top 11 as her own), how will the more PJ-polarising Cowboy Carter fare?

Just looking for my next co-host... hey, @Laura Vanderbooben, you there?

Hell is empty and all the devils are in the Popjustice 2024 Big Pop Girls Now With More Girls Rate. After heated and complex contract negotiations between me (CAA), RJF (WME), Ensnare (UTA), and aux (self-represented), it will be my honor to guide you through what were doubtless the two biggest records released this year by vertically challenged children's television refugees with questionable romantic histories.

Sabrina Carpenter - Short n' Sweet

600x600bb.jpg

Sabrina Carpenter burst out of Olivia Rodrigo's burn book and onto the scene this year in blazing hot fashion, releasing a debut record chock full of-- wait, it's not her debut? She has another album? She has SIX of them?! Christ. Well, regardless, after an extremely...methodical career buildup, it all came together for Sabrina this year. Smash hits! Sold-out arenas! Netflix specials! Jack Antonoff songs that don't sound like all the other ones! Even her own drink at Dunkies! When will Ben Affleck?

Ariana Grande - eternal sunshine

600x600bb.jpg

Even for a career as astonishing as Ariana Grande's, 2024 might have been a new peak. And who could've seen that coming, the way the year began for her? With Page Six and TikTok puritans up in arms, and a worldwide skepticism about her casting in Wicked, she wouldn't have been blamed for laying low. Instead, she shacked up with Max Martin to address everything head-on, releasing her seventh album to rapturous critical and commercial acclaim (it is, incredibly, the only album released this year to spawn multiple #1 songs). That turned out to be only the appetizer for the reception to Wicked, which turned "applying to Harvard with a 0.3 GPA" tweets into Oscar buzz with head-snapping speed. Regardless of how well Ariana does here, she's proved she works best under pressure.

Me? Underneath @Laura Vanderbooben? It's more likely than you'd think.

That's right, you goons! Everyone is here! It is my distinct pleasure to be your guide through two albums that are coincidentally both the third offering from their respective popstars, with both seemingly at different stages and trajectories of their careers while highlighting that fortunes turn on a dime. So join me as we dive into the shark infested and apparently also door infested waters of two of my favourite albums this year from my favourite Barbie The Album alumni.

Dua Lipa - Radical Optimism

600x600bbb.jpg

Helmed by Danny L Harle and Kevin Parker, Dua Lipa's third album on paper had all the makings of something that would make everyone on this forum insta-bust, with someone finally actually heeding all the depressingly unimaginative "I think Danny L Harle would be a great fit for her!" posts that litter pretty much every thread. Alas, it wasn't really meant to be this year. The warmth of the reception it received? Luke. However, it was not without a couple career highlights, a storming Glastonbury headlining slot, and a stupidly huge worldwide tour that allows her to beat the flop allegations into dust. Is there space in her hand luggage for another BPG crown? Only time will tell.

Billie Eilish - HIT ME HARD AND SOFT

600x600bb.jpg

Dropping relatively without ceremony with no singles preceding it, Billie's third album really seemed to reverse the slight commercial rot that had set in with horribly underrated Happier Than Ever, honing her sound even further with brother-producer (as in he's her brother who is a producer, not someone who produces brothers) Finneas with a really tight and right affair. Lean and mean. SKINNY! One of the biggest hits of the year and a tour that will see her on the road until late next--uh, this year, she really came back swinging and shouldered her way into an already packed year. Are y'all gonna eat her up for lunch? Or find her so mediocre?

THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT - TAYLOR SWIFT

600x600bb.jpg

THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT is a fascinating pop album where Taylor Swift, inarguably the biggest pop star on the planet by all metrics, dissects and expulses all of her feelings of the last two years with no filter. It’s a long document of what happens when you’re on the top of your career but the spark with your long-term partner fades, an old flame is rekindled and spirals out of control, leading to a new love. Will voters connect with this behemoth best-seller like the general public?

The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess - Chappell Roan

600x600bb.jpg

The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess is Chappell Roan’s debut album. It came out in September of 2023, but she exploded onto the scene in 2024 after a series of viral moments and excellent word-of-mouth. It’s been so, so exciting to see all of these fun, vibrant and brilliant pop songs slowly make their way up the charts. She's one of the most exciting voices in pop music today and I cannot wait to see how she fairs in the rate. Will voters connect with her songs?
