BIG POP GIRLS 2024

Honestly, I think I overscored "16 Carriages". I think it's a rather poorly executed song fronting as a good one. It's like there are too many lyrics and syllables. The verses end up sounding like she is reading them off a teleprompter that is going too fast, which then makes the whole thing sound weirdly off-beat. The production across the board is lumbering, going quiet to loud to quiet to loud but drainingly. It's just not a pleasant listen. Hearing it and the wretched "Texas Hold'Em" together as a taster for the album was rough. Thank God there was better material to be had.

The best song of the era and it's not even on the album proper nn.

I adore how 16 Carriages is structured nn, the dynamics of the track work because it's constantly oscillating between reminiscing on the past and what was lost vs. the present and what had to be to get here. There's a sense of deep longing to that tension, and I think it hit me so hard because it manages to capture the exact moment where we have to make peace to move forward. I like that the production matches the vividness of the imagery in the chorus. It's also one of my favorite vocals from her, particularly when the layered harmonies come in on the bridge. Still see our faces when you close your eyes is just...chills.

In the simplest way possible, “Casual” is a song about situationships. The song deals with those relationships that never seem to become official, no matter how far they go, and how they make you feel.

Similar to a lot of the short and sweet catalogue from Chappell Roan, this song went semi-viral when she opened for Olivia Rodrigo prior to “Good Luck, Babe!” exploding. In particular, most videos I saw regarding this song was about children at The GUTS Tour putting up their torches during this song. The song also went viral over fans trying to decipher how someone could be knee deep in the passenger’s seat to eat out someone.

Something I adore about this song is the detail and explicitness of its lyrics. “Casual” is a brutally honest song detailing these intimate moments where someone felt that a relationship was more than just casual. Despite these moments being particular and singular to some, the effect of these lyrics is still impactful and relatable. The fact that the chorus is straight up “Knee deep in the passenger seat and you’re eating me out / Is it casual now?” and it doesn’t come off as corny, but rather tender and honest. I love how the song plays upon this idea of sex being a stand-in for emotional intimacy.

One of my favourite parts of the song is in the second verse, seeing how it paints this picture of a domestic future, but there’s an air of resentment that sells the whole thing. That feeling of resentful longing lingers throughout the rest of the song too, down to the final outro.

It’s a perfect mid-tempo, fusing Chappell’s incredible ability at writing choruses with dream-pop and a smidge of country. It’s a hit, I fear!

I think "Casual" is probably Chappell's best song. It's visceral and personal, immaculately performed, and brilliantly written. The shock of the raunchy chorus is just such good pop. Not good pop music, although it is that also, but good Pop. Pop as a medium. Attention grabbing and kinda sexy and also just... real. I'm curious to see where Chappell's second album goes; I'm fearing a contrarian knee-jerk response to reject everything she's good at in the hope it'll reset her life to an extent (I don't believe a single thing about "The Giver" from her honky tonk accent, why she wanted to write it, anything), but I think if she stops fighting herself it could be something special, and I think "Casual" contains all the things she should lean into.
