Björk - Fossora

I understand what some are saying about elements of this being no different than much of her output of the last 10 years, but there is something more comprehendible about this. It certainly could be the driving beat that keeps it all afloat, but I was actually struck more by the lyrical motif and her delivery. It's direct, it's clear, and she doesn't elongate the words as much as she typically does. The production does sound deep and below ground, which definitely made me appreciate everything we'd read going into my first listen. With the music video, her joy is palpable and I've missed seeing that side of her.

Not to mention, the entire package is a fantastical reimagining of what it was like to party during the pandemic. I hadn't thought about it in a while, that claustrophobic isolation but then you're having living room dance parties and Zoom happy hours - it really did feel like you were in a bunker with the ones you love. I like the idea of this song soundtracking it.

I still don't know what it is about her makeup in the video - and this is a good thing - but it really accentuates the uncanny nature of the whole package. The closeup shots in that frilly green outfit remind me of the early iamamiwhoami videos where Jonna's face was digitally altered

This might be just a me thing because I believe uncanniness can be very subjective sometimes, but her thin brows give me silent film/1920's era makeup, and that also contributes greatly to the creepy vibes for me. It's like there's a certain anachronism at play throughout the whole video when you take that makeup and combine it with its futuristic quality, the DJ wearing an early-90's drug dealer neon Adidas jogging jacket, the musicians and their almost comical clown trousers, her strange gestures, etc. And she is no stranger to flirting with these unnerving elements, which I love.

Speaking of unnerving...

I-

Her fans really are something else.

I have to stop myself from overplaying this. It's the way she's serving twisted carnival Tom Waits with the clarinet, the chaotic harmonies of Tune-Yards, and the abrasive beats of Death Grips all in one, but make it unmistakably Bjork. What a vision. We must keep safe our art gurlies who will always just GO for it.

Never heard such melodies from her.
Every verse is a tune, every chorus made for the charts. I can already hear it on radio. Her sell out era I guess.

This list is wild. Nothing I'd rate below a 9/10, and mostly 10s and 11s.
