FOR ALL YOU HOES
WHO BEEN SLEEPIN ON MISS RICHARD
Honestly, I am actually ready for Dawn to not do the greatest here. I think her music has developed leaps and bounds over where she began with
Goldenheart, and my biggest hope is that listeners will delve deeper into her two other albums, as I feel she's finally become the artist she envisioned herself to be during her really humble beginnings after leaving Danity Kane and Diddy-Dirty Money.
REDEMPTION was released November 19, 2016, just a bit over a year ago, opening to widespread critical acclaim, and tying for her highest-rated
Pitchfork review (its counterpart being
Blackheart). The album was the last released in a trilogy revolving around the overarching themes of love, loss, and finally "redemption". Featuring a harder push into alternative dance fused with R&B and electronic, it's my favorite personal record from Dawn, marrying much of the futuristic endeavors omnipresent in all of her work, with a slicker production and a move away from trend-chasing which came off as rather misguided in her earlier offerings.
Some of my favorite album cuts below:
"Renegades"
"Lazarus"
"LA"
"Van Gogh"
And a track released in between
Blackheart and
REDEMPTION, which I've always found PJ-friendly:
"Not Above That"
There's so much more to see (and hear) with Dawn. I hope you guys dig a deeper, cos her music has really gotten me through so many things in the five years that I've been fortunate enough to have it. Wake on up and give her work another try.
