Yeah I was expecting Dawn to haemorrhage tracks pretty early on. I think it's the best body of work in the rate, it's cohesive and well mixed, the themes are threaded through the songs really well and it's a great expression of creativity from someone who could have quite easily never been heard from again if she'd not persevered. Individually though... none of the songs took off.

I liked her debut, but bish where is Azealia?

I mean... everything that's been eliminated so far has either been tepid or "yeah, it's nice, I don't have much else to say" and even if Azealia's not your cup of tea... I don't think anyone could make that kind of comment about any of her songs. They're all loud, bombastic, frenetic and full of personality.

That last one though, fucking beasts, the lot of you. A solid 8/10.

OF TODAY'S THREE-WAY TIE

#73

goliath.png

Goliath - 7.474
Highest score: 10 x 2
(@TRAVVV, @ThisIsRogue)
Lowest scores: 6 x 3 (@AshleyKerwin, @digitalkaiser, @Jwentz)
5.5 x 1 (@2014)
5 x 1 (@Trouble in Paradise)
4 x 2 (@BML, @happiestgirl)
My score - 7.5

Track background: Produced once again by Druski, “Goliath” comes in pretty early on Goldenheart, placing number third (ddd) on its tracklist.

My thoughts: One of the album’s more memorable and distinct tracks. Both the pre-chorus/bridge as well as the chorus are some of my favorites from the entire set. I’m sure its track-length helps too.

Your thoughts:
@TRAVVV - One of my favorites from the album. The “Each swing I counter, I look to my father, I ask him for favor, to take down this monster” bit always fucks me up.
@Bangers&Bops - Initially I was thinking it's another powerhouse track, then it breaks and for two measures there is an amazing little dance beat...then it stops. It's just an interlude...why Dawn, why?! "Goliath" had the makings of something awesome, and we are teased at the end by a beat that is (possibly) the best five seconds of the album. Then it's over!
@happiestgirl - There is too much going on in this song which makes it grating to listen to
@ohnostalgia - Using heavy synths, powerhouse vocals, repetition, and sheer force of will, Dawn builds a wall of sound which challenges even the most patient and loyal listeners.
@constantino - Ooh I just fucking love this. Goldenheart took a while to grow on me, but I instantly fell in love with this song back in 2013 and I’ve been listening to it on the regular ever since. I just wish it was longer...
@Remorque - Slingshoot that stone, sis! Excellent song to follow up Return of a Queen.
@Solenciennes - There’s a subtle industrial feel to the soundscape which beefs Goliath up considerably, it’s special to hear a talented vocalist like Dawn tackle something so heavy hitting, with such dramatic lyrics. I love how well crafted the album is around the theme of overcoming obstacles.
@Trouble in Paradise - A lot of this song feels really dated. I can't say I dig the concept of the song and find some of the lyrics pretty cringey.

Starstruck - 7.474

Highest score: 10 x 3 (@Vitamin, @TRAVVV, @BML)
Lowest scores: 6 x 6 (@Sprockrooster, @2014, @1991, @Trouble in Paradise, @ThisIsRogue, @happiestgirl)
5 x 1 (@Sanctuary)
4 x 2 (@theelusivechanteuse, @CorgiCorgiCorgi)
My score: 8.5

Track background: Produced by Diplo & Switch, "Starstruck" stands as track eight on Santigold.

My thoughts: That bassline uggggggggghhhhhhhhhh. So fucking good. And Santi agrees, consider how hard she sways along in basically every video linked below. I love the vocal production which allows her vocal pierce the sounds assembled around her. It's one of the album's strongest offerings.

Your thoughts:
@TRAVVV - bop bop bop
@digitalkaiser - That glitchy, crunchy production and vocal processing always does it for me. The score is a bit lower then I might give it simply compared to some other songs in this rate, the song feels a bit slight and nondescript in the scope of things.
@Bangers&Bops - a fan mantra of dizzy production that stands to me as the weakest link of this magnificent album.
@KingBruno - *waits*
@ohnostalgia - Sounds like all the stars falling from the sky, tumbling headfirst into nothing.
@constantino - I fucking live for how dark, downtrodden and...droney the production is. Yas, drag my psyche to some rainy industrial town, Santi. This is such an acquired taste that I wouldn’t be surprised to see it out in the first 10 eliminations, sadly.
@Remorque - Stalker anthem?
@Solenciennes - It’s funny listening to this now, the production wouldn’t sound out of place in 2017, year of the ominous bassline.

@Trouble in Paradise - This has never been my favorite song from Santigold. Overall, it lacks any real energy or hook.

My scores tell me that I want the following out next, please -

1) Chasing Time
2) All Hands On Deck
3) My Superman

All great songs but the competition is too fierce...

My Superman - 7.474

Highest score: 10 x 5 (@A&E, @Heaven on Earth, @LE0Night, @soratami, @Jwentz)
Lowest scores: 6 x 4 (@ThisIsRogue, @happiestgirl, @JamesJupiter, @Remorque)
5.5 x 2 (@TRAVVV, @Petty Mayonnaise)
5 x 1 (@Sanctuary)
4 x 2 (@kermit_the_frog, @theelusivechanteuse)
My score: 7.5

Track background: Track six on Santigold, "My Superman" was produced by John Hill and Diplo.

My thoughts: Pleasant. Nowhere near as exciting as much of the rest of the album, though the production certainly picks in the final quarter.

Your thoughts:
@Sprockrooster - I feel like this would have worked better as an interlude than a whole song.
@TRAVVV - Not to keen on the actual song itself, but the production is interesting enough. I particularly like those “hey”s in the background.
@Jwentz - This song was my introduction to Santi as I STAN Sioxsie and the Banshees, and hearing she sampled them made me tune in. The entire experience was very Ilovethissong.gif at :01.
@digitalkaiser - I love this song, when I first heard it I was also going through a hardcore Siouxsie and the Banshees phase and this song really channels “Red Light” by them, it’s almost a bit uncanny if you listen to them together I was so impressed at this reference at the time, shows a real knowledge of genre and it fits so well on this album to boot! She even has a similar vocal inflection in this song! TALENT.
@Bangers&Bops - That dystopic futuristic love song from a diva that doesn't need saving bop
@ohnostalgia - The atmosphere here is so heavy and moody I feel weighted down, sluggish, luxuriously still. I could sit here forever.
@constantino - This is wonderful and I love the melody, but I can’t pretend that it isn’t a slight quality dip after the incredible run from L.E.S Artistes to Creator.
@Remorque - The production on this one is the highlight for me. Her performance isn't really the strongest, yet I've really grown to like this...
@Solenciennes - The eerie production and the unsettling delivery of the titular lyrics is well executed.
@Trouble in Paradise - This may be only song that I enjoy more now than I did in high school. I remember not feeling similar to "Starstruck" in that there was never any momentum or hook to the song. Now the chorus lodges itself in my head and I notice how clever the lyrics are.
