Honestly Kelela’s album put me to sleep multiple times so I don’t understand y’all’s love for it and would love for it all to exit immediately.

(Not LMK tho.)

Break of Dawn

7.680

Highest score: 10 x 6 (@Kuhleezi, @Solenciennes, @2014, @constantino, @Sprockrooster)
Lowest scores: 6 x 6 (@He, @BML, @1991, @inevitable, @Remorque, @digitalkaiser)
5.5 x 1 (@Trouble in Paradise)
5 x 3 (@happiestgirl, @Sanctuary, @Petty Mayonnaise)
My score: 10

Track background: Come on Druski… once again. Ranking at number 14 on Goldenheart’s tracklist, “Break of Dawn” is a ballad that utilizes a rather un-subtle pun of Richard’s first name to illustrate her journey, likely referencing her departure from both Danity Kane and Diddy-Dirty Money, and making her way as an independent solo artist, with a few callouts to her “Hearts” as well. The song could easily be interpreted as a post-breakup anthem, too. Rosina “Soaky” Russell joins on songwriting duties.

My thoughts: I ADORE THIS, as evidenced by my 10. Despite what might be considered a rather lengthy intro and outdo, this song and its triumphant stance have always spoken so deeply to me. The sheer resolve to survive while also lamenting so much of which has cast you aside is a theme that I relate to in many ways, though my path itself is extremely different. It’s definitely in the upper tier of songs making up Goldenheart’s 16-song tracklist.

Your thoughts:
@Sprockrooster (10) - Total Triumph That Truly Transcends Time. That's The Truth Tea. (Yes, I know I have used this before, but I felt like recycling).
@TRAVVV (9) - If you aren’t a stan, I can see where this might be kind of *cringe* - but as someone who’s followed her career for over a decade, I love the unashamed corniness of this.
@Jwentz (9.5) - C'mon wordplay
@Bangers&Bops (9) - A 6-minute power ballad that serves as a defiant fist held up in the air.
@KingBruno (9.5) - It’s the ending that does it.
@Kuhleezi (10) - Nothing short of epic.
@AshleyKerwin (8.5) - Very Brandy.
@Heaven on Earth (8) - It’s a good song but I could do without the “Hey Jude”-like filler ending.
@ohnostalgia (7) - So I love the lyricism, but there’s something about her ballads that just lack compared to the other tracks on Goldenheart. I wish they were more innovative musically.
@constantino (10) - The wordplay is fucking genius and I’m giving it a 10 purely for that. Compared to the other albums in this rate, I tended to focus more on Goldenheart’s production values because I view that as its biggest strength, but this song is one of the strongest in this rate, lyrically. This is a battle cry; this is the sound of a woman who is refusing to be silenced.
@Remorque (6) - I know this is her personal fight song or whatever, but it has yet to make any kind of impact on myself... There's other songs on the album that convey the same thing, yet do it better... And not as long.
@Solenciennes (10) - What a sombre comedown after In Your Eyes… beautiful delivery, and another excellent set of lyrics about overcoming trouble and demons.
@Trouble in Paradise (5.5) - I'm sure that Dawn has had to live with countless people making puns on her names so it seems only fair that she makes a song using one. However, following the cringe of "In Your Eyes," this just continues my cringing. At least the production is much better here?

Live performance(s):
Dawn has yet to christen this song in a live setting, so please enjoy this fine video footage of me and the other high scorers when we find you low scorers:

Azealia's a fantastic artist and we all love her album (as we should), but there's one particular song by her that needs to fuck off at this point.

Yes, "JFK" can go soon. The rest of her debut then can sweep into the Top 50 ~.

S.O.S.

7.731

Highest score: 10 x 2 (@LE0Night, @Solenciennes)
Lowest scores: 6 x 2 (@happiestgirl, @kermit_the_frog)
5 x 1 (@theelusivechanteuse)
My score: 8

Track background: Also featured in Dazed’s February 2016 film “Kelela - “Interlude”, “S.O.S.” landed as track nine on Take Me Apart. The album’s third-shortest offering, “S.O.S.” details an open confession of desire and lust for a partner. A position (kii) that I’m sure many of you trollops have been in yourselves. “S.O.S.” was produced by Kingdom.

My thoughts: Short, but effective. Sexy as hell, but emotive too. I think for many of us, we truly have been in a place where a new love/partner/hookup becomes a push-and-pull of emotions and bodies, and sometimes, the latter is what we need most. This track rather perfectly encapsulates that emotion for me, especially in the relationships and connections that I’ve shared in my own past. This one is a loss, for sure.

Your thoughts:
@Bangers&Bops (9) - Whether she’s singing about a complicated romantic entanglement or something more primal, she’s never afraid to lay herself on the line. “I could touch myself babe, but it’s not the same,” Kelela purrs on here about a straight-up bootie call.
@ohnostalgia (9) - This is filthy.... tell me more.
@constantino (8) - I’ve always been more of an album person so I appreciate the value of a good interlude - they are so vital to the flow of the album and for that it deserves respect. This in particular lets the album breathe a bit in between two of the most dense tracks.
@Solenciennes (10) - The loneliness in the lyrics coupled with Kelela harmonising with herself is really striking; it’s an expertly crafted track.
@Trouble in Paradise (6.5) - Another solid sexy song but a little too short to really build anything up

Riot

7.744

Highest score: 10 x 11 (@Heaven on Earth, @KingBruno, @kermit_the_frog, @lalaclairi_, @ufint, @Solenciennes, @Remorque, @CorgiCorgiCorgi, @constantino, @Sprockrooster),
Lowest scores: 6 x 2 (@1991, @Jwentz)
5.5 x 1 (@Sanctuary)
5 x 1 (@paperboyfriendd)
4 x 1 (@happiestgirl)
2 x 1 (@theelusivechanteuse)
1 x 1 (@BML)
My score: 10

Track background: DRU to the SKI. How... unexpected. With lyrics as dramatic and theatrical as the rest of the LP, “Riot” fuses a fake-out ballad beginning with the trappings of early-’10’s EDM. A banger of sounds gone by, yet still a great moment on an album known for a much lower average BPM.

My thoughts: BOP! Very dated, like…whew. Girl. Plus them Gaga-esque fashions in the leaked music video. Still, one of the bounciest, most upbeat songs that Goldenheart has to offer. Wigs off, ladies. Wigs awf.

Your thoughts:
@Sprockrooster (10) - Snatched every time again.
@TRAVVV (6.5) - Cute, but a little too generic early 2010s anthem for me. She already had too many songs like this at this point in her career (see: entire Armor On EP)
@digitalkaiser (9) - I love the turn of the 2010’s dance banger throwback feel of this, it's always an era of music I'm going to have a soft spot for and her vocals sound good so BOP.
@Bangers&Bops (8) - Nothing gets me more than four-on-the-floor House beats. She. Did. That.
@ufint (10) - Where Have U Been pt. 2 and I was so close to giving this my 11. 3 and a half minutes of euphoria.
@KingBruno (10) - I’m truly satisfied by its Ibiza magic.
@Kuhleezi (9) - I honestly wasn't expecting an EDM-infused bop but this is certainly one.
@happiestgirl (4) - This song does her voice no favors. The way she sings riot at the beginning of the chorus makes my ears hurt
@AshleyKerwin (6.5) - The EDM is a bit dated at this point.
@ohnostalgia (7.5) - Probably the most full on dance track, I must confess this isn’t my fave. I do appreciate the orchestral touches, which ground back to the intro.
@constantino (10) - love how this starts off as a cute little ballad and then boom, y’all wanted a twist? It turns into some kind of pulsating EDM banger. There’s always a risk of these dance pop hybrid tracks ageing horribly, but I don’t think I’ll ever not adore this. 4 years later and it still pops the fuck off.
@Remorque (10) - Starts off as a piano ballad, but after those first few seconds this turns into a house-y bop. Although I love Dawn's performance here, it's the production that makes the song so perfect.
@Solenciennes (10)- The chorus pops off a bit doesn’t it? It’s a bit of a journey how it transitions from potential piano mid-tempo ballad into a borderline rave track and back again, got to love Dawn’s musicality.
@Trouble in Paradise (6.5)- The chorus is too repetitive with some weak production choices, but I love that she goes full up tempo.
