Track background: Produced and written by Machinedrum alongside Azealia, “Luxury”’s original home was on the
Fantasea mixtape, released on July 11th, 2012. It would later become
BWET’s thirteenth track, with a companion video, directed by Clarence Fuller, debuting on September 27th, 2012.
Azealia discusses the song
here.
My thoughts: This POPS off, and is another fine display of Azealia’s talent in both singing and rapping. I do appreciate how much more of a smooth feel that this has in comparison to her other tracks, as well as that whistle looping throughout. It was amazing on
Fantasea, and it being just as necessary to
Broke with Expensive Taste is a testament to Azealia’s ability to create connected soundscapes despite the rather few attempts she’s gotten to do so. The video's black & white vibe almost being a throwback to "212" is cute too.
Your thoughts:
@TRAVVV (7.5) - A whole vibe. This was the first time I remember her full singing voice on a track (aside from 212). I just want her to iron out her mix range… it kind of grates on this track (and shows weakness in later tracks like Escapades)
@Bangers&Bops (7) - Cool and catchy but kind of soulless.
@KingBruno (10) - A garage house hit.
@Kuhleezi (9.5) - What an opening! There's something about Azealia's lower register and deep house beats that works just so well.
@He (10) - The track she apparently made just to show her friends she could sing too. TALENT! All around lush and sexy.
@ohnostalgia (9) - It’s amazing how evocative Azealia can be, with only a metallic soundscape and a whistle I can taste the credit fuelled shopping spree from here.
@constantino (10) - Quintessential Azealia right here. This is just so...hypnotic. Her dulcet tones alongside the nocturnal club production...heaven. There’s also a nostalgic quality for me; it reminds me of my teen years traveling around London by myself for the first time with Fantasea blasting in my ears...yeah...this is a special one for me.
@Solenciennes (10) - Hey hi hello yo what’s up! This was a standout on Fantasea so I’m glad it made it onto Broke With Expensive Taste, the beat is so catchy.
@Trouble in Paradise (5.5) - Nothing bad, nothing great. It's almost disorienting for an Azealia Banks song to leave me without any impression at all. I feel like the majority of her songs either give me strong positive or negative vibes. This song just kind of happens in a way most of her music doesn't.
