Take Me Apart

8.885

Highest score: 10 x 12 (@constantino, @paperboyfriendd, @Jwentz, @CorgiCorgiCorgi, @LE0Night, @R92, @lalaclairi_, @K94, @ohnostalgia, @Heaven on Earth, @AshleyKerwin)
Lowest scores: 6 x 2 (@Sprockrooster, @happiestgirl)
My score: 10

Track background: Track number third on Take Me Apart, the album’s titular song was produced by Al Shux, Jam City, Ariel Rechtshaid, Arca, Loric Sih & kwes., and written by Kelela, with Mocky, Al Shux & BOOTS. Following the narrative of “Frontline”, which sees a defiant lover leave their partner, and “Waitin”, with said lover running into their former mate while out and about, “Take Me Apart” delves further into that relationship beginning/developing once again, but this time, with a newer open-ness, lessening of fear, and a furthering of intensity. Kelela discusses it here:

My thoughts: This is gorgeous. GOR-JUSSSSSSSSS. First off, let me say that that opening melody is a bit too damn difficult to replicate a capella, but damn if I won’t keep trying to get it right.

ANYWAY.

The way the production simultaneously layers, buries, and propels her vocal throughout this is BRILLIANT, and nothing short of. I guess for me, this album the most out of any here really reaches me, as so much of its subject matter has become my own story these last few years since moving out on my own and walking within my own romantic, material, and sexual agencies. This song is literally “the one” when it comes to the LP, as it perfectly encapsulates every little last thing it has to offer: vocals, lyrics, production, and narrative. Having fallen into love with someone, having had to leave him, only to reunite with him TWICE, and then come to terms with finally laying our time to history’s hands, was... hard, to say the least. But through it all, I found what I consider "me", as well as the affection that I’m now able to give and receive to someone who makes more sense. There is no friendship or thought of the past, but it’s liberating in the sense that in the end, I've gotten closer to what I think might be happiness. So in many ways, “Take Me Apart” really grounded my experience, normalizing it, while helping me arrive at my own stage of self-determination. It performed fucking WELL here. I’m proud, of it, and somehow... maybe myself too.

Your thoughts:
@TRAVVV (7) - Upon initial listen, I wasn’t too keen on this track. But repeated listens have revealed it to be a MASSIVE track - that middle 8 melody is something else!

@Jwentz (10) - My second choice for an 11, such a gorgeous track.

@Bangers&Bops (9.5) - This hovers in the silky realm between drum ’n’ bass and rhythm & quad. So fucking lush.

@AshleyKerwin (10) - The millennial Someday is Tonight.

@ohnostalgia (10) - Yes, ma’am. (I’m sorry).

@constantino (10) - Out of all the songs on the album, this is perhaps the biggest throwback to her Cut 4 Me sound, and I’m not mad about it. The copy, jittering nature of the melody in particular is what reminds me of her older material, but the fullness of the production towards the end of the track keeps it on-par with her evolved 2017 sound. EDIT: WHEW does this grow with repeated listens, she did that.

@Solenciennes (7) - I think this suffers from being the only album in the rate I’ve not heard any material from at all prior to rating, given a bit of time this will probably be one of those ones that grow on me. The music’s great, but I think it overwhelms the vocals and lyrics because there’s so much going on. I think that says more about how easily distracted I am than anything else but yeah.

@Trouble in Paradise (8.5) - This is a vocal standout for me. The production and lyrics are also on point.

Better

Highest score: 11 x 1 (@A&E)

10 x 15 (@constantino, @2014, @paperboyfriendd, @digitalkaiser, @CorgiCorgiCorgi, @Remorque, @soratami, @Solenciennes, @inevitable, @lalaclairi_, @beyoncésweave, @ThisIsRogue, @Trouble in Paradise, @BML)

Lowest scores: 7 x 3 (@JamesJupiter, @Posh Spears, @AshleyKerwin)
6 x 1 (@kermit_the_frog)
5 x 2 (@Sanctuary, @happiestgirl)

My score: 10

Track background: Kelela wrote “Better” with Mocky & Romy Madley Croft, with production coming as a collaboration between Mocky, Bok Bok, Ariel Rechtshaid & kwes.. It is Take Me Apart’s sixth track, and concludes the narrative of the first relationship that is documented across the LP’s fourteen songs. See Kelela discuss it here:

My thoughts: For me, the background on the song, especially as it follows “Jupiter”, really pairs well with the icy, cold, and haunting production, which also for me, resembles the coldness we feel in embracing letting go of something that once was so much of us. Its the vocal layering throughout that keeps me engaged, as the instrumentation is quite sparse - which I think expands the power behind its lyrics. Heartbreaking, tbh.

Your thoughts:
@Sprockrooster (9) - This drags a bit too long before the beat comes in. But when it drops it was worth the wait.

@TRAVVV (9.5) - So haunting.

@Jwentz (8.5) - Cathartic non-bop bop.

@Bangers&Bops (8.5) - The solemn industrial ballad production with her harmonies, amid a metallic churn, become a hall of mirrors, as if to reflect the conflicting voices in her head.

@ohnostalgia (9.5) - Such a beautiful, self-assured perspective. I’m so ready for my wise self-realized thirties phase.

@constantino (10) - Whew, a MELODY. I usually live for her production choices most of all and the more extravagant the better, but the skeletal arrangement is fucking impeccable. Her crystal clear vocals, the occasional and perfectly placed choral elements and the overall strength of the melody in its own right...10s, 10s across the board.

@Solenciennes (10) - Beautiful vocals, love how the focus is truly just on Kelela’s voice. The song soars on the strength of the lyrics and her delivery, and the beat kicking in towards the end of the song is a game changer.

@Trouble in Paradise (10) - Holy shit, this is everything I wanted from this album. Her voice is incredible and the production is pristine. The lyrics paint such a detailed and wounded picture of a relationship put to rest.

Bet (feat. Dev Hynes)

8.91

Highest score: 10 x 15 (@Petty Mayonnaise, @Sprockrooster, @constantino, @Sanctuary, @Jwentz, @digitalkaiser, @soratami, @Solenciennes, @LE0Night, @lalaclairi_, @Kuhleezi, @Posh Spears, @ThisIsRogue, @1991)

Lowest scores: 7.5 x 4 (@2014, @TRAVVV, @ufint, @beyoncésweave)
7 x 1 (@kermit_the_frog)
6 x 1 (@BML)
5 x 1 (@Trouble in Paradise)

My score: 9.5

Track background: Produced by BloodPop® & DJ Dahi, “Bet” is track two on Aquarius, featuring an outro consisting of a guitar solo contributed by Devonté Hynes, leading to his feature on song’s official credits. Tinashe is joined by the producers in writing the song itself, and speaks briefly about it below:

It was released on September 29th, 2014, approximately a week before its parent LP dropped. You can see Popjustice commentary here.

My thoughts: Sexy, which is one of my oft-used words when it comes to much of Aquarius, as well as most of Tinashe’s music. Funnily enough, I actually prefer this over “Cold Sweat”, as did you, as evidenced by its overall score from everyone. What has always pulled me toward this one has been the harder, grittier production, as well as how she plays with her tone, in a way that words fail me to successfully describe right now. I adoooooooore how her vocals have been produced here. The biggest takeaway tho, is just how insanely good the album starts. Mid-tempo, ethereal realness, before a brief interlude ramps us up for a bit. Delicious.

Your thoughts:
@Sprockrooster (10) - This is stellar production and undeniably good consequently. The only real high on Aquarius. A solid 9,0 until that adlibby outro and guitar solo cause that shit makes it a 10 without question.

@TRAVVV (7.5) - One of her best songs, just wish it was a minute shorter (sorry Dev)

@Jwentz (10) - Tinashe and Dev just make a perfect pairing. I want their cheek to cheek.

@digitalkaiser (10) - This was always one of my favorites on the album, I really love the video for this too, so industrial and glacial. Having this on your debut album though? WHEN will anyone else? Her vocals in this are so confident and just ooze sexuality for me, it’s a highlight. This still feels so fresh! The ‘BET ON IT *production beeps*” are so addicting.

@Bangers&Bops (9) - A mystical ride-or-die anthem, "Bet" brushes off haters of love and assures that Tinashe is down for the long haul. Devonté Hynes' guitar outro is an exhilarating exclamation point.

@KingBruno (8.5) - This one sounds a lot like “Worst Behaviour” by Drake at certain points.

@happiestgirl (9) - The best part of the song is the way she sings California

@Posh Spears (10) - I change my mind about what my favorite Tinashe song is all the time, but this is always up there. It really is a fucking journey and I love every second of it.

@He (8.5)- Serve vocals, Tinashe! This is gorgeous.

@AshleyKerwin (8.5) - I always think about how that alleged private Bjork Facebook posted a link to the video with just an “AAAHHHHH”. I can’t find the exact screencap but I’ve googled around and there are a lot of other Bjork and Tinashe moments. Also, I was surprised that this Dev Hynes song didn’t have the traditional Blood Orange imprint on it. That guitar solo is next level.

@ohnostalgia (8.5) - Gurgling synths and murky vocals give me that beautiful listening underwater feeling. But I have to mark it down for the superfluous guitar solo.

@constantino (10) - The production is just...I can’t even articulate it...but I’m gonna try. It’s just so full and expensive. Dev<3

@Remorque (10) - EPIC!

*wails along with Tinashe*

*Also me:*

tumblr_mho99oCByO1qiavcao1_400.gif

@Solenciennes (10) - I love the emotion bedded into the track, Tinashe’s plaintive lyrics set to all those warped distortions is really affecting. There’s something so effortless and cool about this and I’m a little bit sad for the state of her career in 2017 when she’s capable of this kind of quality.

@Trouble in Paradise (5) - The production feels very dated to me, and I can't say I loved the guitar outro. Overall feels like an old Rihanna album track that we'd all forgot about.
