DJ Mustard also produced the track. It is track five on
Aquarius, and features an interpolation of Sean Paul’s 2005 track
“We Be Burnin”, resulting in writing credits for the team behind that single. It was officially released on January 21th, 2014 (to celebrate her 21st birthday), though it was available a week earlier, on January 13th:
You can see Popjustice’s reaction
here.
Its music video, directed by Hannah Lux Davis (who would later direct the video for “Superlove”), was released on March 24th, 2014. The song eventually peaked at #24 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Tinashe discusses the track here:
My thoughts: Literally the first that I ever paid grand attention to Tinashe, with my first play on February 2nd, 2014 as Last.fm so kindly has reminds me dddddd. I think this is a pure
bop, and really sells so many different parts of Tinashe well - she’s street, she’s sassy, a great dancer, and a force to be reckoned with. The only thing missing is… a great vocal. Studio-wise, yes, it's terrific, but as a track alone, it doesn’t say much about her ability, though thankfully
Aquarius picks up the slack in that department.
The music video to me, is the perfect companion to the track. I love how it slowly but surely incorporates dance elements, before ramping it throughout, reaching the climax. I really couldn’t imagine a better visual for the song, as it complements it entirely too well. I swear I get goosebumps just watching it. She’s such a fucking
star. This definitely deserved top 10 (both in this rate, but on the charts too). A shame.
P.S. I don’t think she’s ever done this justice live, considering how low it’s recorded/sung. The choreography is on point, of course. But otherwise? Pass~
Your thoughts:
@Remorque (11) -
I don't even care what anyone says about this, but this still gives me all the feels I need when lit. So if this gets to be crowned in the end I would just open a bottle of vodka, put on this song and let go. So bite me if y'all didn't want to see this do well again, sistren.
@Sprockrooster (3) - That rap is a complete disaster. And also that chorus is completely uncaptivating. I do love the hey's in the beat.
@TRAVVV (7.5) - I know this is her best bop, but this lyrically feels beneath Tinashe.
@paperboyfriendd (10) - A basic bop but the best kind. The way she says "Smoke it yaaehh" never fails to make me smile
@Jwentz (10) - Effortless force of a song, the kind that refuses to not be a hit.
@digitalkaiser (10) - FUCK i get all the way crazy when I play this, I use it every. Single. Time. I’m with the girls or heading out for a great evening, it’s THAT party jam that I will never ever tire of. Miss Tinashe really came through here, and I even don’t mind the ScHoolboy Q rap, it just adds to the sexy dark feeling this song evokes. Queen of getting 2on.
@Bangers&Bops (8) - DJ Mustard’s familiar synth bounce and Christmastime (kiii) chimes. ScHoolboy Q's rambunctious bars give this feel-good smash just the right amount of scruffiness. A bop and a half.
@KingBruno (10) - I love how this renovates the combined teen pop and R&B sound from the previous two decades.
@happiestgirl (10) - It’s crazy how this song was hammered on the radio back in 2014 but I never ever got tired of it. It just always sounds so fresh and fun
@He (9) - A deserved hit. She should have more. I had never paid attention to the rap before, ha.
@AshleyKerwin (9.5) - Great but a little dated at this point.
@ohnostalgia (10) - I mean what else is there to say about 2 On? It makes me want to get wasted with Tinashe and I don’t even drink.
@constantino (8) - We love an iconic, semi-breakout career defining single. This has come on at the club several times and I can say that I make a damn fool of myself every time. It really is that bop and should’ve been an even bigger hit.
@Solenciennes (10) - The song that introduced me to Tinashe, this was my first ‘our song’ with my boyfriend so has a special place in my heart, seeing Tinashe live was our first gig together too and this was a highlight of the night. I mean when will any of your faves interpolate Sean Paul proselytising about weed in an authentic way? Queen.
@Trouble in Paradise (6) - I remember when everybody was all about Tinashe and this song in particular and I never got the appeal. I don't think the DJ Mustard production is for me. I still don't really click with the song. It's basic and fun, why does everyone make such a big deal about it?
