Fun fact, when voting closed I was so startled by a couple of the top songs that I made my self re-do the entire spreadsheet to make sure I didn't mess it up.

Exile loses its first track! The Crow is a bit less memorable than some of Exile's highs - and some of its lows, honestly - so I can see why it got middling scores. And it takes about 3 minutes to really get properly going - for a song with a 5-minute runtime, that is quite risky!

That being said, it's not a bad song by any means. It's just painfully average, as the sea of 5/6/7s on the spreadsheet prove.



@londonrain (6) says, "This gives me Chris Isaak vibes." It also reminded me of a different famous Chris - this sounds like a lost Chris Cornell track.





@berserkboi (9.7) declares it "Great!" and @abael appreciated the "nice respite from the usual bombast of the album."

@RUNAWAY (5), on the other hand, complains, "jesus I was just literally WAITING for this one to end. The middle of this album is really a CHOICE." @OspreyQueen (8) calls it "gorgeous" but still agrees "it could do with being a minute shorter." And @Reboot (4) winces, "This makes me feel absolutely miserable." A 2019 mood!

I'm pretty sure "Guilt - Hurts" is the most frequent note my therapist puts in my file.



This was one of @abael (7)'s top scores for Exile! "Now this is more like it. If there ever was a compelling ending track or this album, it would be one about how much happier I'll be with its absence." @Reboot (8) agrees somewhat: "I love that this so obviously feels like the last song on the album. It's very pretty."

@Untouchable Ace (6.6) notes, "You sort of don't notice it's acoustic." Poor @berserkboi (9.7), the highest scorer for both of today's eliminations, dubs it "Heartbreaking!" while @saviodxl (2), the lowest score for both of today's eliminations, declares, "This album's flaw is that it's too long."

Like I understand Exile is bottom-tier stuff, but these were 2 of the 3 I gave my highest scores to! (I'm not giving anything on it above a 7, and tbh my 7 for Guilt was simply for the fact that it meant the album was over.)

Another Exile track falls, and I gotta say, I wasn't expecting this one to leave so early! It's one of the more emotional tracks on the album, and it seems very traditionally Hurts to me, just with a slightly more industrial edge.



@berserkboi (10) is "loving these harder instrumentals against that angelic voice!" Fellow top scorer @OspreyQueen (10) agrees: "Exile has plenty of enormous choruses, but this one in particular is…orgasmic. That moment when the distorted synths smash through the choir always gives me chills."

@abael (4), on the other hand, says the "music and lyrics just seem mismatched to me."

You guys didn't have much to say about this one and neither did I so here's Duffy.

This is a song that lots of album reviews highlighted, for better or for worse. For example: "Hutchcraft’s over indulgence renders tracks such as ‘Policewoman’ viscously laden with questionable lyrics and cheesy organ chords." And for another, slightly more positive example, another review said that Policewoman "seems like a strange title to close out an album on. It starts with organ notes, making is sound almost hymnal, and as the song progresses, it seems to be describing a woman with responsibility for keeping the mean streets clear of crime and hoodlums (“when I hear those sirens coming / my iron maiden’s running / to serve and protect my loving”). But it’s got to be more than that, to be about a higher power, something bigger, much as I think is the purpose of ‘Surrender’ as it ends with ominous clanking and what sounds like the words “from the pain” repeated."



@abael (7) gets us off to a good start with "Yay Fascism!" @Untouchable Ace (7.1) dubs this "their Coldplay moment and for once that's not a good thing because they are channeling the GP just ate up for no good reason."

@berserkboi (9.4) highlights the "gorgeous instrumental" and reboot (6) says, "I love the melody, but the lyrics are slightly bizarre." And @londonrain (5) says "That ending is... a choice."

@OspreyQueen (7.5) finishes us off with: "Yes, this is cheesy as fuck. Yes, the policewoman metaphor doesn’t really work. Yes, Theo’s enunciation is frankly bizarre. But despite all that, I like this song. I think it’s actually really sweet."

Mercy is out with the bottom 10??? Y'all decided this dark, jagged masterpiece that literally sounds like the elements chaotically converging in a storm, with one of the best (if not the best) choruses in Hurts's entire discography, was worth less than Thinking Of You, Walk Away, Evelyn, and like a dozen other C-list Hurts songs????????

The guitarphobia jumped the fuck out.
