Hey! Time flew by. First, I wanted to thank everyone who submitted their ballots in the past few days. I'll input the ones I just received once I'm home. We've got 9 voters so far, and I'm still waiting for many more potential ones, so it's likely I'm going to announce another extension later today. You can also expect some Leaderboard Tea and a tagging round!

I was really surprised actually, I thought I liked it more than that dddd. Made in Twenty being on the higher end surprised me as well.
Speaking of "OUTGROW", I can see how some people might give it a lower score overall if they followed the rollout. It has only 4 new songs and almost all of the b-sides from the singles got to be featured on it. Now the songs are really good and they flow amazingly together in the context of the album, but the fact that you already heard 70% of the album can sour the experience. I had somewhat similar issue with Amuro Namie's "Uncontrolled", due it being full of already released material, not to mention BoA's very own "WHO'S BACK?", which only had one song, so it basically a best album, dddd. It's nothing new for the Japanese market though, since they always release all the singles prior to the album's release with some very rare re-cut singles, but still the issue and hence the reasoning behind widely different opinions remain.

Guess I'm lucky that I discovered BoA when "OUTGROW" has just been released, since all the songs were fresh to my ears. I guess it even remains my favorite album of hers.

I’m still cracking on with mine, should hopefully have it done by tomorrow but an extension would be really appreciated!

My overall averages

Girls on Top 7.91
Outgrow 8.29
Made In Twenty 6.96
The Face 7.16
BoA 6.07
Extras 7.54

Overall this era is so strange and middling. And surprisingly I think some of these albums actually got a higher score and benefit from individual song rankings. So many 6s and 7s! I tried to be generous with my scores, but I also know if I were to put all of these songs next to 2015 onwards BoA, that a ton of these scores would dip a point or two.

Debut to Best of Soul era BoA had such a dynamic range of lows and highs. They were figuring out the formula, but when it cracked the code it created some stunning y2k teen pop music. Additionally you could give the benefit of the doubt to this era because BoA was just so young, that even those early rough songs had a charm coming from a 13 year old. That era was just so exciting to see the growth before our eyes!

Everything after Outgrow however felt so much safer. It became a classic case of, now that you are a bit older what kind of musical/creative statement do you have to say? And despite series of albums that conceptually were all hitting the same themes of growth, identity, and self actualization, it was a watered down version of the highest highs for the most part. There were less highs and lows, just consistency across the board.

Experiencing the rollouts felt more disappointing than my scores actually reveal. By the time you get to Made In Twenty, the songs became by the books, trendchasing, and interchangeable. Never terrible, but you could tell Avex was just holding onto what they thought would be safe commercial successes instead of centering what made BoA shine or what would be new grounds for her artistically. Additionally the lack of Korean albums started to flatten the dyanmic and interplay of BoA the artist in that period.

For example it felt so strange to experience that rapid growth of Love & Honesty, My Name, Girls on Top, and Outgroww, and then by Made In Twenty be back to safer songs like Brand new Beat and Key of Heart. Even the singles of Outgrow felt a bit soft and safer, but luckily the album as a whole felt more balanced. It especially confused me in that 2006 time period because the landscape of j-pop had acts like Namie, Kumi, and so much more who were still really centering the more sensual and/or aggressive r&b inspired dance songs.
