Boybands Forever - BBC Documentary series

All the managers seemed fairly ruthless, knowing what the boys were going to endure but not ever really being there in any supportive role for them, who were incredibly young (Robbie and Lee from blue in particular). Eric Watson seemed the most openly cold and calculated. Not surprisingly, the News of the World guy still held unpleasant views and had no remorse on purposely destroying people's lives for entertainment, acting as if they almost deserved it.

This was a great watch. I weirdly don't remember Five being that big or lasting as long as they did. I also seem to remember Another Level pre-dating Blue and basically doing what they did but with more credibility but I guess more people remember Blue.

Five were probably the biggest UK boy band of 98-01.

Another Level didn't last very long at all. It wasn't even two years between their first single (Be Alone No More) and their last (Bomb Diggy).

They were approached to do The Big Reunion a few years back. I'm sure the story was that Dane and Bobak were up for it, but Wayne wasn't interested and Mark's boss (Alan Sugar, who is also his father-in-law) wouldn't give him the time off.

Watched all three episodes today. We didn’t learn anything that we didn’t know already but nevertheless I could watch this sort of show every day for the rest of my life, so I devoured it.

It being *The BBC* definitely added a bit of gravitas too. I doubt any other channel would have attracted Robbie, Simon and Louis.

What happened with them? I went off to France for my 3rd year at uni, came back in summer 2000 and they’d disappeared.

Didn’t Wayne want to leave and then the band basically split up. I remember Dane mentioned that Wayne refused an American label deal for the band.

I'd have thought One Direction would be covered, but other than them and some of the Korean ones who I don't really know much by, boybands haven't really been that big in the last 15 years.
I imagine a Series 2 was planned to feature Busted, McFly, JLS, The Wanted, One Direction, The Vamps - but recent news has probably delayed it by a few years as I can’t imagine anyone involved wanting to speak about One Direction right now.

Another Level being led by two pitchy singers and two backing dancers/rappers is kinda funny in hindsight.
Mark was neither a rapper nor a dancer (check out the Bomb Diggy video for proof of the latter).

As to why he was in the group at all, I think everyone can work that out for themselves.

I really enjoyed it.

But....the whole conclusion being 'Well it was bloody awful being in a boyband, but they've all reconciled with it now and are leaving happy lives.....Good for them....." does leave a bad taste following Liam's death. Down to timing I guess.

That NOTW guy is just playing up to his villain role. Louis Walsh though........ugh!

I really like that the 90s and 00s era of pop music has started to become intellectualised on a wider scale over the last few years. It’s a bit like we’ve all been proven right.

Yes, the pop side of things is often overlooked. Rave and grunge and hip hop etc get so much glory but pop doesn’t get much of a look in so it’s nice to get series such as this.
