Boybands Forever - BBC Documentary series

Also, why wasn’t J’s singing voice used more in Five? Granted he sounds like someone attempting Gary Barlow at karaoke on his audition tape but he can sing.

One of my favourite things about this era of pop is thinking about how everyone interlinks. It feels as though every popstar is about three degrees of separation away from every other popstar.

East 17’s manager buying a studio for his boyfriend Biff aka the man that wrote actual Wannabe.

It’s actually quite a small circle of talent when you think of it like that.

I watched two episodes last night. I forgot how many bangers all these boybands had. Like bops on bops on bops!

My main initial takeaways are that;

Gary Barlow seems to have always been a bit of a knob, like ew
Ritch from 5ive has aged like a fine wine
Scott looks so traumatised by the whole experience which makes me sad
INSANE that 5ive passed up on ...Baby One More Time and Bye Bye Bye?!?!?!
Damage for sure deserved better
Blue's bangers have stood the test of time

I found it interesting Five focused on Scott’s breakdown but no mention of Sean’s given it’s been documented before. Or maybe he didn’t want to discuss it.

I’m still flummoxed by the A1 clip or did they feature in episode 3 and I missed it?!

Fascinating series. Especially episodes 2 and 3 for me as that was more my era.

Expected to see A1 as mentioned by someone else.

A1 would’ve been interesting as each era was a bit of an identity switch, moreso from The A List to the Make It Good era.

I guess there’s only so much they could cover, but just seems odd them showing a clip of Ready Or Not in the coming up in the next episode but

I really like that the 90s and 00s era of pop music has started to become intellectualised on a wider scale over the last few years. It’s a bit like we’ve all been proven right.
Against Louis Walsh's wishes. He's always so dismissive and defensive whenever someone tries to analyse any of it. He's always saying that it's just "great pop songs" but it's not.

I just binged the first three episodes and it's a nice comfort watch of stuff we all knew and some interesting things every now and again. Aside from my long-held loathing of Gary Barlow's voice, the one thing that stuck with me throughout, was what I thought was a bit of an unfair hit, was when the East 17 guys complained about Biff being able to get a new studio with his "House of Love" money, as if he stole that money out of their pocket.

He produced their big hit, it's only fair he gets a share of royalties too - but he's not the one that signed a record deal and is now in debt to the record label for millions of band investment money, so he's not the one with his cut being recouped.
