Why pop girls great till they gotta be great?
Okay.
Let's do this.
Sorry it's late, girls. I had originally signed up to do this year's rate under the impression that the guest list would be a little more... more than it was. Naturally, this has led to some of the toughest contract negotiations of my life (legally I'm actually not allowed to be closer than five hundred feet to @Laura Vanderbooben after all this ugliness behind conference room doors) including a cute lil side project that allowed me to be fulfilled creatively. But nevertheless, despite delays, distractions, delusions, and the despots amongst you remaining convinced it would never happen and should maybe be postponed, it's finally here. The mess. The tears. The mess. The prompt and consistent elimination schedule. The mess. The Big Pop Girl Rate of 2019 arrives, and myself and @Laura Vanderbooben will be your shepherds through this particularly deep valley of darkness.
Here's how it works:
1. You give all of the below songs a score between 0-10, and one song can be awarded an 11/10.
Half points are allowed, and I'm not allowing anything that's any smaller because frankly I know good and goddamn well some of y'all will fret over the difference between a 6.7 and a 6.8 and frankly I don't want that nonsense in my inbox.
2. Don't be a fucking moron and troll.
Like... exactly what it says on the tin. There's good and bad everywhere on each album presented, so score accordingly. We're all big girls these days; bombing out a particular artist or overscoring certain artists to the point where your scores make no difference outside of puffing up averages isn't allowed, and will get your ballot challenged and/or thrown out.
3. Send your scores to me AND @Laura Vanderbooben by February 9th.
This means that we can split the work load of putting data in the spreadsheet and no one gets their feelings hurt when more people send their scores to one person. And no, this was NOT what caused the restraining order!!!!!
And finally... something that might be controversial.
4. Commentary is NOT permitted outside of your 11/10
Yup, that's right. If you submit commentary for songs outside of your 11/10 choice, it will not be used. More about this in the thread as I'm sure it might be a... problem for some.
BEHOLD. Your ballot for 2019.
Billie Eilish - WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?
Up first purely because I thought she released first and I can't be bothered fixing the spreadsheet to correct my clerical error, Billificent Eyelash makes her debut in the BPG Rate. One of the highest opening weeks of any album released last year and overall one of the most successful to boot, Billie crashed into the scene with her spooky ooky bops and premium teen angst ballads. Will you be giving her a warm welcome to the sisterhood in your votes?
1. bad guy
2. xanny
3. you should see me in a crown
4. all the good girls go to hell
5. wish you were gay
6. when the party's over
7. 8
8. my strange addiction
9. bury a friend
10. ilomilo
11. listen before i go
12. i love you
Ariana Grande - thank u, next
The first time ever that a Big Pop Girl has been in two rates in a row, Ariana Grande bucked trends by refusing to dick around and got another album out six months after her previous album had been released. And it was somehow even bigger than the last. Some of last year's biggest hits sit amongst some of the most personal album tracks in the rate. Where does it fall on your scale?
1. imagine
2. needy
3. NASA
4. bloodline
5. fake smile
6. bad idea
7. make up
8. ghostin
9. in my head
10. 7 rings
11. thank u, next
12. break up with your girlfriend, i'm bored
Beyoncé - The Gift
An accompanying soundtrack for a film role? Wow, I don't think anyone's ever done that. Beyoncé just keeps trailblazing. One of last year's lesser celebrated releases (I say lesser; it's still BEYONCÉ), The Gift was essentially a Beyoncé concept album in a year where, for all intents and purposes, she was probably due to put her feet up. Did anyone actually see the Lion King? Clap if you saw the Lion King, and score accordingly.
1. BIGGER
2. FIND YOUR WAY BACK
3. NILE
4. MOOD 4 EVA
5. WATER
6. BROWN SKIN GIRL
7. ALREADY
8. OTHERSIDE
9. MY POWER
10. SPIRIT
Taylor Swift - Lover
Taylor Swift released a collection of songs that play one after the after. Most music journalism cites her as the inventor the album. You?
1. I Forgot You Existed
2. Cruel Summer
3. Lover
4. The Man
5. The Archer
6. I Think He Knows
7. Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince
8. Paper Rings
9. Cornelia Street
10. Death By A Thousand Cuts
11. London Boy
12. Soon You'll Get Better
13. False God
14. You Need To Calm Down
15. Afterglow
16. ME!
17. It's Nice To Have A Friend
18. Daylight
