BPG 2019 - THE END

Thank U Next is a real bop why would you not like it

Also surely Ocean Eyes is Billie's most known ballad?? When The Party's Over is ok but a couple of other bops from the album (My Strange Addiction, You Should See Me In A Crown) should've beaten it to make top 10.

Isn't the whole point of repeating a year to do better than you did the last time? Poor it. Falling three spots lower and with a score a fraction lower than the one it got last year (8.583), we finally say goodbye to what ended up being the title track of Ariana's album. I actually give it a higher than I did last year (6.5/5.5) but it still leaves me cold for the exact same reasons so lemme just copy and paste my thoughts from last year's rate as this is the kind of high quality write ups you're getting when we're four days out of finally putting this mess to bed.

"Meh. It’s no secret Ariana’s borderline-dementedly positive outlook in some of her music this year hasn’t really gelled well with me, and I think, 'You know what? I love all my exes, because they taught me something. Ilysm.' is the peak of that foolery to me. You combine it with fairly schmaltzy lyrics all the way round, the way the entire song kind of just… floats along like a plastic bottle in the ocean, and the crap video (let’s just be real), and it’s basically a distillation of everything that I don’t particularly like about her as a popstar. So naturally it’s been huge."

One year later and I'll add to the above that I think the song is actually improved slightly by the context of the album. While I still feel as cold-hearted and cynical as expressed above about Ariana's whole ethos in the song, I can at least appreciate it after hearing songs where she wrestled with some absolute demons and came out the other side. It feels more... like a measured form of pain management rather than insipid armchair psychology. Realising that you can only hold on to so much resentment and pain and learning to... prioritise. Perspective is everything, I guess.

Let's pass over to @Dijah. who presumably finds this the best song of the last two years, not just this year, "The definition of a bop. Everything about this song from the cute production to the angelic vocals to the reflective yet optimistic lyrics gives me the warmest feeling. The song didn’t resonate with me that much at the time of release, but when the album dropped I had been dealing with maybe the most traumatic breakup I’d ever had and it all finally clicked with me. Every time I listen to “thank u, next” I get a tiny, cathartic release. Therapy whom???"

I was actually rather surprised and impressed that Thank U Next went top 10 again even after people knew how it fared last year. That's impressive resiliency for a pop song, especially when the HATERS are out in full effect here!!!!

nn the flash of her TIME cover reminded me of this iconic post:

And then having the versatility to present as Saoirse Ronan when it's time to scrub up for TIME magazine! Chameleonic talent.
