BPG 2019 - THE END

I knew I should have wrote some commentary this week. However, I definitely could not have topped @Jonathan27's stunning commentary. As someone who spent most of their adolescence and early 20s harbouring romantic feelings for some of their closest friends, the lines "call me friend but hold me closer" and "I can lie, say I like it like that" are quietly devastating and all too relatable. It feels like you'd do anything for that person, or perhaps it already feels like you have, but the feeling is ultimately never reciprocated, at least not in the way you wish it was. And the party, rather than being a gleeful distraction from the less savoury elements of your life, winds up becoming another crushing reminder of your loneliness by the end of the night.

bad guy

bad idea

Never Really Over
everything i wanted
All I Want For Christmas Is You
Don’t Start Now

If we could lose bad idea and everything i wanted next I’ll be delighted with any outcome thereafter. I think enough killjoys will have blocked All I Want For Christmas Is You from making it much further.

I’ll be surprised if the top two isn’t Don’t Start Now and Never Really Over.

Now that my 11 is gone I'm gonna just say it; I hope "Don't Start Now" leaves next. It's a great song and was a triumphant return that did exactly what it needed to do both commercially and critically for Dua; however, the song itself doesn't quite live up to the hype for me. I still gave it an 8, but it's the weakest remaining song for me. I know it probably has the top 2 on lock, but I hope Katy (or Mariah) ended up pulling off the win.

lowkey agree. It was an amazing start to era 2, and is certainly a bop, but it’s also (cue the pitchforks) my least fave of the three released tracks.

LOWEST SCORE: 4 x 1 (@Ashling92)
MY SCORE: 9/10

I had an entire thing planned around this song being about XXXTENTROCIOUS, but in my three minutes of research it seems I might be wrong about that. That being said, 17 (the age Billie was when this was released) is pretty damn young to be burying multiple hunties, so sis must have taken some inspiration from that little incident at the Florida motorcycle dealership, and this time that is not an @aaronhansome joke.

My new favorite thing about 'bury a friend' is that the Wikipedia article says "Critics noted the video's horror elements," which is like a writeup of Parasite saying "Critics noted the English subtitles." Duh. That's Billie's thing. She's Marilyn Manson crossed with Avril Lavigne in a Gen Z milieu. Do with THAT assessment what you will, girlies!

This slaps though. Let's be clear about that. That beat that sounds like someone is getting railed in the apartment above you...yes god. Now you all know I'm Team Jesus Team Soldiers for Christ so hearing a 17-year-old say she thought she would be dead by now is...not pleasant, at least to my ears, but the last time I said Billie had some Xanga elements to her, @RJF tried to frame me for tax evasion. So we'll swerve that one for now and say that all 17-year-olds are so dramatic and flamboyant, it just makes me want to light myself on fire.

Feels a bit off-brand for Music is Life to slap this with ha 11 - is the goth phase here? "I had a couple other songs that were in contention for my 11, but they're guaranteed to do well here anyway, so I figured I'd give it to this. I have no idea how the forum feels about it, bu this is the song that launched my Billie stanning. I was on my first day with a boy, and we were laying on his bed watching YouTube, and he decided to play the video for this, and I just loved it automatically, even if I was more focused on him at the time. The song itself quickly became my favorite on an album full of them. The production is so fucking unique and like nothing I've really heard before. It's dark, menacing, anxiety inducing but so boppy and catchy. And the lyrics! So relatable in places and at the same time not in others. I've always interpreted the song as a combination of struggling with depression, and a look at her fame. The second verse in particular seems to be about someone who tried to use her for her celebrity status. It seems like to me, fame, and the person it could turn Billie into, is the monster under her bed. And I find that idea so interesting. I hope the song does well here." It did, hunny. Also if someone played a song like this for me on the first date I would get the hell out of there, these hoes ain't about to sacrifice me.

So so happy this made top 10!
Actually @Laura Vanderbooben, I love dark lyrical themes, as I tend to find them relatable, due to my own mental health issues, so this was always going to be a strong contender for my 11. I never did have a goth phase though...maybe its time for one haha.

To be fair, he had already recommended when the party's over to me earlier that week pre-date, so this song/video combo wasn't much of a surprise. Honestly not the freakiest thing he could have showed me haha.

Thanks to all the lovely people who gave this high scores! But...
LOWEST SCORE: 4 x 1 (@Ashling92)
Girl....as a fellow Swiftie, I trusted you.

And the lack of 10 from @savilizabeths makes me nervous
