I'm not gonna lie, adding this into the rate seemed like a massive kii at the end of December and the start of January, but even just linking to the videos below and hearing the
start of the song ball-deep in March kinda makes me want to hurl. I hate Christmas
so much and the awful weather the UK has been getting battered with makes it feel like it's only just
stopped writhing and twitching after a stake got put through its heart. Go away, you demon.
HOWEVER, let me not ruin the moment darling, because honestly, what was accomplished with "All I Want..." last Christmas was brilliant. Mariah's upswing over the last few years after a few years before
that of appalling management and image crises has been incredible to watch. Awards, retrospectives, repairing her live reputation, maybe the best social media in the game, and the thing that seems to have been most paramount: pivoting away from the diva persona (as much as a
true diva can without not being real) and finally getting the branding as a songwriter; something she's
always been but never got the credit as. So last year, she and her team decided that this was it; this was the year they were going to push "All I Want..." to No.1, and jeez, did they ever
push.
I mean, I mostly included this for the kii and to celebrate its momentous achievement this year, but... Mariah also hustled harder than pretty much every other girl does in 2019/2020 to make this a hit. A new video, endorsements, a re-issue, performances everywhere... and it paid off! Not only was it the last No.1 of the... 11s??? It also became the first No.1 of the 20s. How does someone this skinny manage to straddle two decades at once?
The song is
immaculate, of course. I think the thing that's made it so evergreen is how it perfectly blends seasonal sentimentality with
blinding fun, a rollicking production that has everyone in the pub on Christmas Eve on the ceiling (apart from me; I remain lying on the bathroom floor) the moment that beat kicks in, and how it still also manages to sound contemporary and
cool for a Christmas song, even after twenty five years. Mariah could never write another song in her entire life and still life an obscene life off the royalties of this one.
All hail the Christmas Queen.
@GimmeWork was the only 11/10 to actually give some commentary, so let's move to them, "Snatching that #1 and then having it count in 2 decades!!!! As a laminated lamb since I was a gaybe in the 90's this means more to me than I can really convey. Its better than having my cake and eating it too. It's just.... Giving me life and it's everything!*gayly sighs*" Sis... "my stan card has been lambinated" was
right there. Honestly, this is why we've been doing all the write ups solo this year.
