When will people ever learn? With that iconic line, delivered in that growly alto, the career of Toni Michele Braxton was born. A multiplatinum recording artist with a career spanning thirty years, Toni is the oldest of six children (in descending order of age, her siblings are Michael Braxton Jr., Traci Renee Braxton, Towanda Chloe Braxton, Trina Evette Braxton and Tamar Estine Braxton) born to Michael and Evelyn Braxton. The five daughters formed a band called The Braxtons, were signed to Arista Records in 1989 (when they ranged in age from 12 to 22) and released their debut single, Good Life, the year later. The single bombed, but over the last thirty years Toni, Traci, Trina and Tamar have all forged solo careers. Toni is by far the most critically and commercially successful, with seven Grammy Awards (out of 13 nominations), seven American Music Awards (out of 11 nominations), as well as four gold-certified albums and three multi-platinum albums in the US. After the sisters and their mother appeared in their own reality show, Braxton Family Values, Tamar revived her failed solo career and now has three Grammy nominations to her name and a total of five albums, while Trina and Traci both launched their own solo careers (of which Traci's has resulted in two studio albums) and The Braxtons even reunited for a Christmas album. ("Who tryna sing my note?!") I could have just run a Toni Braxton singles rate, but given how intertwined her career is with her sisters', it felt appropriate to include all five ladies in this rate. Okay. What do I need to do? Simply rate each of the songs on a scale from 0 to 10. I'll allow decimals, but keep it sensible. Nobody wants me to screw up the results because I accidentally put down 5.2642 instead of 5.6422. You may award one song, and one song only, a score of 11. Choose wisely. When you're done, send me a message (using the little envelope in the top right corner of your screen) that contains your scores for all the songs. There are no optional sections in this rate, so you must give a score to all of the songs. But @londonrain, Toni is the only one I've heard of! Don't worry - Toni still has the lion's share of the songs in this rate, and Traci and Tamar both have quite similar music to Toni genre-wise (even though Tamar has a much higher range). Trina aims for the bops more, which should be PJ catnip anyway. Can I rate a version that isn't listed in the song list? No. Unlike my previous rates, I'd like you to vote only for the versions listed. Part of the reason for this is because I wanted to honour Toni's US dance #1s, all of which are listed separately, and part of the reason is because this is a singles rate so I'd like the single edits to be the ones that get scored here. Do I have to include commentary? Commentary is highly encouraged, but is not mandatory. Sure, you can just send in a bunch of numbers, but it will make the elimination posts a lot more interesting if you tell us a bit more about why you gave the scores you did. When are my scores due? Please send your scores to me by Sunday, March 29 April 5 at 23:59 Pacific time. Happy scoring!
