Britney Spears

The credits were fake. Britney was never truly involved in writing all of the songs, and Britney Jean was no exception. Her team likely included her name to promote the album as her "most personal" work, but in reality, she had little to no control over her career during that period.

I remember watching her music videos during Femme Fatale, especially the first two singles and thinking she just looks a little tired and "zoned out" - looking back now and knowing what we know now, it's strange that she looked more in focus for Work Bitch and Perfume

Wasn't it also said that many producers pulled out when they got told Britney wouldn't be promoting the material?

This was made up. It makes no sense. She didn't promote Femme Fatale much either and it gave her some of her biggest US hits. She'd also just come off Scream and Shout - another one of her (regrettably) biggest US hits. The idea that Mike Will Made It got wind that, no, Britney would not be on Good Morning America performing his song and he said "Than this iconic star who has been scoring hits pretty effortlessly for years shall not have it! It shall go to Ciara!" is INSANE.

Passenger especially gives me the biggest ick now, the song is about actually enjoying somebody else taking control – it felt weird back then, but knowing what we know now, it's almost sinister they put that song on the album.

I thought Passenger was about god rather than the conservatorship but that's gross if it was written with that in mind.

I do wonder how she was able to wrangle back some creative control with Glory, while it wasn't really introspective or deep in any way she was so much more involved and enthusiastic than she had been in years, and had more legit writing credits than she had since In The Zone.

Just instinctively, I think it's very unlikely that her team wanted her not to be involved with Britney Jean.

I'd guess that the sequence was they decided on the Vegas Residency (probably to square Britney's own reluctance to tour with the desire to make money) but they wanted to avoid the association of her being 'retired', especially since the idea from the venues point of view was to attract a younger crowd. They felt it was important for her to have an album out. Britney, for whatever reason, didn't want to engage with the album and so they just went ahead with it anyway. So when she was willing to record, they were fine for her to do that.

Even if the tracks weren't pulled because of no promotion (which does seem unlikely) the album does reek of scrounging around to pull together whatever scraps they could at the last second. I imagine other producers refused to work with them because her team had become too controlling and impossible to deal with. The whole album is made out of bottom of the barrell will.i.am. edm tracks and Katy Perry scraps and even on those, everything sounds so shoddy and unprofessional in a way that's so uncharacteristic of a Britney album. The infamous glitch on the William Orbit track!

It was a glitch that was introduced after they messed around with the vocals. It wasn't present in the demo that leaked. It kind of skips at 2:14 as though a bit of vocal was cut out.

Just popping in to repeat how incredible, especially in vocal delivery, Amnesia is. Easily in my top ten Britney songs.

For a song about wanting to cheat on her long term fiancé/husband with a guy she barely knows, she plays it either such overt innocence and bewilderment that you are totally behind her actions no matter what. Oh what I’d do to listen to this in the quality we deserve…

Amnesia is definitely one of her most abstract songs, I always imagined a video where she's hanging out in a 50s diner that is crumbling down around her. She's drinking a milkshake whilst dust from the crumbling walls fills the air.

They were definitely scrambling for songs. Even if the reason why wasn't legit, it is a fact that songs were pulled and producers were dropping out. Probably because of how overbearing her team was at this time; Bloodshy & Avant had also remarked after Femme Fatale was released, saying they wouldn't work with Britney again as long as her dad and Larry were around. Dev Hynes and Naughty Boy said something similar regarding their experiences with her team as well.

In any case, I remember very vividly Larry saying they only had a handful of songs recorded at the time "Work Bitch" was released. That was in September, and the album was coming in December. She had been recording for months before that. So where did those songs go? The reason Myah ended up on so many tracks is likely because Britney just didn't have the time to do any re-recording by that point because she was prepping for Vegas. I remember William Orbit saying she only did one take on "Alien", and I suspect that's the case with the majority of the album.

I think Britney Jean was just the result of poor task management and relationship building all around. Like what @Drew said, she was still one of the more reliable hitmakers around at the time. Even on a Britney on autopilot mode, she would still get attention from the best. It's more likely that they crammed contacting producers at the 11th hour after weeks of... not doing anything for the album. Didn't David Guetta or one of the producers say that will.i.am contacted him and said he needed a song by the next morning, he put it together a little hungover and that's how Now That I Found You came about?
