Buffy the Vampire Slayer / Angel

So it's been pointed out that someone actually posted this a month ago on Reddit:

Interesting that we'll seemingly be getting a jaded Buffy? In my head, she's been at peace since the series finale. I'll be kind of sad if they go the angle of having her been miserable since the series ended, but obviously this is an incredibly small bit of info and it can be taken many different ways depending on the actual storyline.

Oof! That word. Curmudgeon: a bad tempered old person. I take offence on SMGs behalf for that. She’s only 47!

I mean I guess those were the only two directions to take her character - motherly figure or jaded and hardened and from a character perspective jaded and hardened is a more interesting starting point that allows more room for character growth.

It just kind of ruins the hopeful ending of Chosen. The whole final shot of her looking into the distance, released from the burden of being the only chosen one and for the first time having the possibility of being able to live a semi normal life.

In my opinion, that would make for a good and realistic starting off point.

The series ended on a note of hope but we all know from experience that hope is a fickle thing. I imagine she’s had a lot to deal with in the 22 years since the show ended. Activating all Slayers was the right thing to do but at the same time it also introduced all these women to a horrible reality that is often accompanied by death and loss. At least some of the activated slayers will have died as a result of the choice they made or have used their powers for nefarious reasons. It would be normal for some slayers to resent Buffy for that. At the same time, while Buffy had hope, she also still has had a tremendous amount of loss she has had to deal with herself, coupled with doing that in a world that isn’t the most understanding and financial instability that comes with it.

Yeah, honestly this description doesn't bother me if true. I don't expect her or any characters that come back to be the same after 20 years, time simply can't just stop, it would be unrealistic if everyone acts the same. Fighting for decades shouldn't be easy, it has to take a toll on you. I imagine Buffy as more sarcastic with dark humor, its ok if she won't be full of hope.

He/Him
How much of the original cast will be back do we think?

I highly doubt we’ll get Nicholas back as Xander but what about Willow?

Angel and Spike will need so much de-ageing so that eliminates them beyond the odd guest spot.

Anthony Stewart Head and Dawn could come back. Some of the Potentials (not Kennedy please).

Need Faith back!

I actually would love it if they followed the Slayer books by Kendare Blake, those were so good!

The only characters who feel like the most probable returns outside of Buffy herself are Dawn, Willow and Giles. Though she’s not exactly working at the moment, Michelle is still friendly with SMG and vocal about her role as Dawn (she was also happy to bring back another TV character for a reboot not long ago), Alyson is quite active in Hollywood (albeit in reality TV dd) and ASH only just lent his voice to that podcast so I’m sure he’d love to pop back for an appearance.

I’d love for this to start with Xander’s gravestone, but they might keep him alive in the hopes that they can get Nicholas Brendan to pull his shit together for a scene or two since he’d probably jump at the money nn. Eliza would be one of my top choices to bring back but she seems fully done with acting, and who can blame her. Emma Caulfield sharing the news might just be her showing excitement for her friend, or it could mean she’s being worked into it somehow. She’d 100% do it, I just don’t see how Anya could be alive and kicking and also 20+ years older nn.

David B and Jams Marsters need to stay far away from this, though. No amount of TV budget CGI would be able to sell them as their former selves.

They could make up some kind of in-universe explanation. Remember how in the Fray comics (I don't know what happened in Buffy past Season 8, it was just too bad), they said that Buffy managed to seal all magic in the end? Could be a reason for them ageing.
But I'd rather, they'd rein in it a bit. The comics showed what happens if the Buffyverse doesn't stay at least a bit grounded in reality.

So yeah, have most of them be dead, except for the ones who could reasonably return (Willow, Dawn, Giles...).

The reboot could start off with Angel having been staked at some point in the last 20 years, which is part of the reason that Buffy is seemingly jaded about her life. There could be a season long big bad, and Buffy discovers that Angel had some essential knowledge that without which they couldn't slay said big bad. Her and Willow decide to resurrect him, but part of the pay off is that he is no longer immortal and battling demons in a hell dimension for 20 years has aged him (like a fine wine). There are ways of getting around Angel and Spike not being in their 30s anymore.

Overall though, I think they should keep the returning characters to a minimum if their intent is to showcase a new generation. If they insist on Xander being alive, I would prefer he lived far away and is only very occasionally mentioned.

Yeah, I think they'd need to be careful with returning characters and use them over time, so they don't alienate new fans. The whole reason the Scream reboot franchise did SO well compared to the 4th instalment is the focus on a new generation of characters for younger audiences, while keeping the legacy characters included in logical ways. I think they should approach this in a similar way if they want it to be a hit with multiple seasons (which would be good for opportunities to see more and more of the old characters popping up)

Yeah… the finale will essentially have to be undone in some capacity for this not to feel too superhero-ish.

Maybe no slayers were born anew because of the spell and they’ve all gradually died over the last 20 years. The numbers will need to seriously dwindle for this to work.
Or something has been killing them/killed most of them which would be an easy big bad for season one.

Everything I'm hearing sounds so promising. Alyson Hannigan is coming back too apparently.

Seems highly likely they are basing it around this -

Frankie Rosenberg wasn't yet alive when her mom, Willow, her aunt Buffy, and the original Scooby Gang destroyed the Hellmouth and saved the world from the First Evil. These days, life in New Sunnydale is blissfully quiet. Frankie is just trying to survive her sophomore year at the rebuilt high school and use her budding magical powers to make the world a better place.
But that world is suddenly plunged into danger when the slayer community is the target of a deadly attack, leaving the future of the line uncertain. Then Frankie discovers she's sort of freakishly strong. Oh, and there's something Willow never told her about her true identity.

I don't like the idea that they rebuilt Sunnydale when the hellmouth is gone, and why Buffy and her friends would return and send their child to high school there. I feel like they could come up with a smarter premise than this.

Chloe will be doing her own thing.

Already see too many people wanting Zionist Charisma Carpenter to return.
Luckily, she's dead. Hopefully they don't find a way retcon that.

I feel like the fact Emma shared already means Anya will be back in some capacity, which is exciting.

I hope Xander died along the way. Of the male cast, I'd love to see Giles return at least as a guest, and I think there's a very realistic chance of Oz returning (I have no idea why).

It'll be interested to see what a they can do with the Vampires, Demons, action sequences etc of Buffy with a 2025 TV budget. I hope they keep a good portion of practical effects, but it'll be exciting to see Buffy and co kicking ass without the crunchy (but charmingly of its time) 90s VFX.
