Buffy the Vampire Slayer / Angel

I don’t doubt it’s true (character sides are rarely fully accurate mind you) but the vitriolic reaction reaction to it online has proven to me that the die hard losers fanbase don’t want anything other than a direct continuation with Buffy as the lead. They’re going to be sorely disappointed because it’s very clear it’s no longer going to be Buffy’s show.

I’ve seen pearl clutching over the fact that it might not be called Buffy the Vampire Slayer, when I thought that was abundantly clear by now.

If should obviously just be called The Vampire Slayer.

Edit to add: The moaning fans should just recognise that if this show is a hit then the likelihood of other additions to the universe and franchise become more likely and possible again.

I hope Giles is able to return in some capacity. I'd forgotten how top drawer some of his sarcasm to Buffy was.

"I'll just jump into my time machine, go back to the 12th century and ask the vampires to postpone their ancient prophecy for a few days while you take in dinner and a show."

Yeh it think some people are expecting Buffy season 8, but if you listen to any quotes from Sarah about Buffy in the lead up the announcement she always states the thing that made Buffy special was the horrors of adolescence manifested as monsters metaphor.

The new show is clearly going to be a modern interpretation of seasons 1 - 3 with a new cast of teens dealing with monsters as the physical manifestation of… whatever teens these days deal with… social media? I’m sure it will be better than that with the team involved I just don’t know what impacts teens these days.

Buffy will likely get one juicy arc in the first season that’s relevant to women of her characters age. Something to keep the OG fans who tune in happy, and to allow Sarah to flex her acting chops. Maybe something about finding her purpose again after losing it for a while, likely through helping the new slayer & her pals. If the season goes beyond 1 season she’ll probably feature less after that.

Personally I’m excited for it. It definitely has potential to be awful but I’d rather they give it a go than not bother at all for fear of failure. If it’s bad I can just pretend it never existed.

Oh, I'd more than bet all the Slayers will be dead or gone by some means by the time this series starts. They won't want a world full of slayers around, it'll rob the new series of its impact and they'll want Nova to be the lone hero just like Buffy was.

Would be quite cool if all the Slayers were turned "off" somehow in the pilot (maybe by the Big Bad of the season) and all their power pours into one new vessel. Nova, of course.

I feel like I keep banging on about it but the slayer books by Kendare Blake a lot but they handled this so well. It allowed for the continuation of Buffy and co’s story while also allowing you to follow the story of the newest slayer.

If they used these books as a blueprint for the show, I’d be so happy. The instagram demon story was great!

I think, considering that it is a continuation of the established Buffy TV universe, that it'd be rather fitting for the new show to be called "Chosen".

It ties into the original show's lore and takes the final episode title as its mantle to further the story beyond it while being able to reach back to the past for characters, themes and stories etc.

There will have to be some kind of "mass cull" of the activated Slayers which could be an interesting season, or multi season arc, cameo some of the old potentials and bump them off raising the stakes (pun intended).

It would be interesting for some of Nova's "Scooby Gang" to be killed off or switch to the dark side early on to change things up so she has to seek out and learn/rely on Buffy.

Sprinkle in some cameos from original BTVS cast (Giles, Faith, Willow) and we can have the best of both worlds.

It's just about finding the right mix of nostalgia and new adventures.

Into Season 2 re-watch now. School Hard is a banger (Sheila should've returned in another episode), and Spike is unbelievably cute here, but I'm wincing at the thought of Inca Mummy Girl next.

EDIT: Inca Mummy Girl was better than I remembered. Cordelia was great and we got to see Oz for the first time, but the lusty-Xander episodes tend to be cringe as hell.

So I'm not the biggest fan of Angel (the series), but I watched the season 1/season 4 of Buffy crossover episodes and enjoyed them. I kind of felt like they were essential to watch.

Are the season 2 episodes with Darla and Drusilla worth watching? I also notice Faith pops up in a couple of episodes in season 4.

Yes they definitely are. I’ve never known a show to have so many different reactions- I really liked Angel the series and pretty much all of season 2 is great. Julie Benz and Juliet Landeau are fantastic.

Angel isn't as good as Buffy, but it's a great watch with some amazing highlights. And great characters, they're a really charismatic team as a whole. Season 2 and especially Season 4 - I'm currently watching Season 4 and although some of the overall plot points are flawed, the way it's all executed is great, it's so dramatic and gripping. It's honestly non-stop. I'm also currently rewatching Buffy Season 7 and it's overall definitely better than that!

I loved season 6 when I was younger (I think the darkness of it came just as I started growing up so maybe I associated darkness with better/maturity). But it doesn’t hold up on the rewatch.

The ideas are all there but the execution veers between largely either bad, unconvincing with strange character writing, or just too gloomy and miserable to enjoy it. Even the light relief episodes feel like a drag.

Angel is worth watching for Darla's story arc alone. I rewatched Buffy/Angel back to back recently, and I'd forgotten how fantastic Julie Benz was.

I would say Season 3 is overall the best season, with the best main "villain". Season 4 was pretty rubbish, though I still think Charisma did a great job with the material she was given.

Season 4 of Angel really struggled with a change of creative direction at the last minute and the writers simply didn’t have the ability to pivot very well to accommodate Charisma’s pregnancy. Weird how both season 4 of Buffy and Angel had to drastically change the planned overarching storylines.

I know there are parts of it that are messy but I love season 4 of Angel. It was exciting to see the show go into full blown serialized mode and sustain a season long story arc as well as they did.
I liked Gwen and loved watching evil Cordy, but I found both the Beast, and Jasmine to be dull villains. In comparison, Holtz had a far more interesting and heartbreaking back story. Darla's storyline in S2 was also a lot more interesting too. I don't think I need to mention Connor lol.

Though I will be fair, and say that the beginning of S4 wasn't too bad, and the episodes with Faith were very good.
