Camila Cabello - C,XOXO

It's an odd tightrope to talk because while this clearly didn't land properly, I do think off this there's potential for whatever she does next to do better. I think I'm more likely to give a Camila Cabello lead single a fair shot after this album than I was previously.

I just hope her (or moreso her label) don’t see this as a down period and pivot back to a less interesting, more palatable package for her next album - I’m hopeful

I remain deeply fascinated with the entire disaster and I'm curious how it will translate long term. Obviously reception was less than ideal but the positioning felt deliberate in shifting away from the toothless hits she had previously stumbled into. It's a unique case study for recalibrating an artist to a lower commercial ceiling to do something more creatively interesting (if mined of obvious influences).

I guess it worked on me at least!

Yeah, this kind of nails it and it’s something Pop Pantheon have done a great job at needling at this year (and I know you’re a little panty dropper like me).

Now more than ever, it’s better to swing big and have a small number of people obsess over your output than try and placate the wider population with something that sticks in the moment and doesn’t leave an impression, and I’d say she’s more than achieved that. As @mindtrappa touched on, the way this album was pushed was a complete shambles but I do think once we’re out of this year and she’s able to move forward, she’s in a much better position now she’s free of the commercial expectations she set herself with the debut.

Speaking of:

I'd successfully ignored this era for the most part, but I just heard B.O.A.T. and it's a pretty stunning song to be fair. Who knew you could turn a Pitbull sample into something so haunting and melancholic. El Guincho is so good.

I then skim-listened to the rest of the album, and other than some interesting production, the rest ain't for me.

Same I only checked it out due to end of year reviews - stunning.

I’m a bit shocked at the lack of ambition.

I know she’s lost a lot of goodwill but I saw Fletcher who has a lot less of a profile in the Eventim as part of a sold out UK tour (and she did 2 nights there). I would have expected either a longer tour of these size venues or a one off Arena date.
