Carly Rae Jepsen - The Loveliest Time / The Loneliest Time

The first time I've played all her albums I've been a bit 'meh' apart from a few songs but they all eventually sink in and it's like 'how have I lived my life without this?'

I have faith she'll deliver the goods.

Ok Talking To Yourself is pretty incredible. It just… works. Might get a little obsessed with it.

played Western Wind right after and it wasn’t the whisplash I thought. It’s pretty complementary actually, there’s a certain DNA across both, and the latter sounds like a stripped version of Carly. An “all that” moment.

Beach House… exists. I still don’t think it is THAT bad but doesn’t make a lot of sense dd.

Talking to Yourself is excellent. I’ll admit that I haven’t been madly in love with her output in recent times as much as I once was, but this feels like typical early Carly. I loved it and felt like I knew it by heart after the first listen.

She lets the song breathe at the right moments while also hitting you over the head repeatedly with pure energy, melody, and hooks. As always, the finishing touches and flourishes are what elevate the song, she has a great ear for pop.

Talking to Yourself got me nostalgic for 2016 and hammering Side B again, The One/Fever/Cry now that's a classic trio, that's a moment, dig me deep.

Talking To Yourself has that obsessed-in-and-out-of-love, vaguely sinister stalker energy I love about certain songs in Carly’s discography. Songs like Fever, Emotion, I’ll Be Your Girl, Tonight I’m Getting Over You all have her sort of playing up the role of a “crazy” ex-girlfriend that won’t go gently into that good night after a breakup - she wants them to hurt and never forget.
Scorpio sissy behavior! <3

The release of Talking To Yourself has been really great for managing my expectations for the album, after being extremely excited after Western Wind and kinda worried after Beach House. If this is the baseline level of quality on the album I have no doubt it’s going to be another pretty solid, if not groundbreaking CRJ album. I think that’s a pretty good place to be at going into an album.

The pounding, euphoric head-rush type of production that she usually pairs with more romantic "falling in love" songs (Higher, Stay Away, Cut To The Feeling, Now That I Found You, Runaway With Me) coupled here with "fuck off" energy and biting lyrics just makes Talking to Yourself feel special to me. A Since You Been Gone moment that works so well. I'd love more of this energy mom.

It somehow does not feel like there is a new Carly Rae Jepsen album coming tomorrow? I know she’s in reality an incredible niche artist, but I would have expected even a modicum of hype on gay Twitter!

I’m sure I’m not alone in having very much struggled to build up a coherent vision of what this album’s world will look like. Perhaps that and the fact that Beach House is dreadful, and Talking To Yourself was disposable after a day of being hammered, are the reasons my excitement doesn’t quite feel all there.
