To Be Without You was written by Carly herself and produced by Joe Cruz and was included as track 2 on Carly's debut independent extended play Dear You in 2004.
Look at that average jump! Nearly 2 whole points. It's what she deserves honestly. Other than that though, this song was almost always second to last and I can understand why. I assume it was unfamiliar to most of you before voting and the fact that it's a folky ballad...well it was never gonna do well here. And the song itself is definitely very...meh. It's my lowest score on Dear You, and my joint lowest in the rate (with Beautiful) so I'm very happy this is gone now. The bones of a great artist and especially songwriter are in this song, but the production actually sounds like it's dragging it's feet as the song plays, the melodies are slow and boring and there's really nothing to grab onto in the song. The lyrics are really good and Carly has a solid vocal on it but it's overly long and doesn;t have any moment that makes it memorable, as nice as the song is and as much as I enjoy the overall sound of it. Definitely not a loss at all.
So what did all of you think? Well, evidently not a whole lot, with only 4 of you sending a comment for this.
@daninternational (3) hits it right on the head:
It's a bit boring, but not bad per se. Exactly. And
@Sprockrooster's (4) ears may be bleeding:
This is getting too screechy for me at times. Hope they've healed up. Highest scorer
@unnameable (10) seems to be in awe of her talent:
even back then, she could craft an angsty song perfectly. I think we have different criteria for what "perfectly" means. And
@pop3blow2 (8.5) makes a positive comparison (8.5)
It’s always a bit jarring how Michelle-Branchy is compared to what she became. It's definitely an interesting career trajectory. Imagine a Michelle/Carly collab though. I wonder how that'd sound.
And a couple of my favorite Michelle Branch songs:
