Carly Raete Jepsen: 15 Years Of Pop Perfection - #118 Do You Want Me Or Do You Need Me?

My scoring system is very simple in that I just score songs based on how I feel about them in general. It's always made the most sense to me and that won't change.
IN OTHER NEWS I missed it but last week Kelly's favorite kind of high came out and it's an absolute banger. I'm mentioning it because Carly co-wrote it and you can tell in the best way:

Wow this is indeed very Carly, thanks for sharing cos I missed it too (don't really look out for Kelly)

referencing a Canadian Legend who just just passed recently.

No matter the decade, those Canadians can right a tune!

Ahhh okay. Thank you!!

You're welcome!!! And you should change that ddd.

Ddddd I keep forgetting to change the thread title.

I'm not mad, just disappointed.

Part Of Your World was originally written and produced by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken and recorded by Jodi Benson for the 1989 Disney animated film The Little Mermaid. Carly's cover was produced by Richard Kraft for the Diamond Edition re-release of the film and was later included as track 14 on The Little Mermaid: Greatest Hits.

Just real quick: I love Disney movies. Especially Disney princesses. The Little Mermaid is my second favorite Disney movie and Ariel is my second favorite Disney princess. And Part Of Your World is quite possibly my favorite Disney song of all time, especially with the reprise. So this has a lot going for it for me. And I honestly really love Carly's take on it. I think her voice really captures the sweet, innocent wonder of the song and the production is cute twinkly take on the tune. I don't really have a lot to say about this cover as a song on it's own because...duh. I just really love it. I think it's distinct from Jodi's original and other covers in a great way. While nothing will ever reach the original, this is still a great version of the song and I'm sad it did so poorly here. The fact this is getting eliminated the same night the live action Little Mermaid premieres though...is kinda funny.

@LoveMachine (2) does not agree with me: The original is probably my favourite Disney song. There's loads and loads of cover versions, each one more horrible than the last. This is one of the better ones. Still sucks. You're wrong and you shouldn't say this. @Shockbox (0) doesn;t even blink while throwing this under the bus: Just no. You're wrong for this. @daninternational (4) apologizes: Sorry but I do the definitive version of this, and no other versions are required (except Kelly Rowland in the shower) Apology not accepted. @Sprockrooster (5) mentions another cover: Not this cover making the cut but the iconic Don't Speak cover from No Doubt did not. I honestly forgot about that cover's existence ddd. Spotify Singles flop I guess. @unnameable (9.5) only speaks the truth: This is not my favourite Disney song, but Carly sells every single phrase of it. FACTS. Exactly. @pop3blow2 (9) agrees with us: Gotta lover her earnestness. Howard Ashman would be proud. I think so too. @FunkyButChic (4.25) doesn't agree with us: I think her voice is great for musical theater but… not on this song. And I don't hear a problem with her voice sooo get your ears checked I guess? And @lilylu (4) gives a small compliment: Her singing is nice but it’s nothing I care to listen to. That sounds like a you problem if I'm being honest ddd.

Listen to it again and repent:

The original because duh:

Halle's wonderful take on the song:

And the reprises from both cause God this reprise is perfect:

Honestly, I don't think I would have scored this all that well. I really admire how dedicated she is to it, earnest is definitely the right word. However, it's not something I would ever choose to listen to. The Little Mermaid was my favourite Disney movie growing up and this one of my all time favourite songs so perhaps I'm just picky.

This elim did inspire me to unearth an old video of me singing this in high school though, so that's a fun nostalgia trip.

Listening to this again, yes, it's way better than it was in my head, so I'm sorry for the low score (still think it's a bit karaoke though).
The original version just has such a special place in my heart, I can't tolerate any of the other ones.

The way I'm like "new take on song I love by artist I love? Yay!" And you guys very much are not like that dddd.
Also love that you have a video of that.
I'm not going to let this elim stop me from feelin' fishy this weekend. I saw Little Mermaid last night (my fav Disney of all time) and only cried twice!!! Halle is such a superstar. Can't wait to see it again.
I can't wait to see it!! I can't this weekend but hopefully sometime next week.

Also, good morning/afternoon/evening everyone wherever you are! 120 and 119 will be coming today and once again they are from two different albums and yes, they are two that have already lost a song.

Carly's Academy Award-worthy performance in the video? On reflection, perhaps I should have given it a 10.

I Still Wonder is my lowest score on 'Tug Of War,' mainly as it's so short. There's the germ of a good song there, I kind of wish that Carly would develop it into a bigger production. 3.5.

Part Of Your World is a song where the singer has to tread a thin line. It can become too cloying and saccharine if the singer isn't careful; sadly I don't think Carly quite manage it. 3.25.

Sweet Talker was included as track 8 on Carly's debut album Tug Of War and written by Carly herself along with Ryan Stewart with production done by the latter.

Ummmm I don't like this song that much. I had forgotten it was also my joint lowest score with a 5 and for good reason. I just don't think this smooth, R&B-esque track really works for Carly, at least at this point or with this specific sound. The production is cool and interesting and I love how it builds. But it all doesn't come together very well for me. I'm happy it's gone. And the sliding through a window lyric is used much better on a later song.

@daninternational (4) has an interesting point: Lacks the Carly character - could be from anyone. Hmmm yes and no? I think it doesn't make sense for Carly sound wise, but the lyrics are her. She even uses the window lyric here. And @pop3blow2 (8) may have insider information: Like the history with this song, but not really a fave here. Please share, I don't know anything ddd.
