Good Time was written by Adam Young, Matthew Thiessen and Brian Lee and produced by Adam Young. It was released as the lead single from Owl City's fourth studio album The Midsummer Station, and the second single from Carly's second album Kiss on June 26, 2012. It is one of Carly's best performing songs, having reached a peak of #8 on the Billboard Hot 100, and hitting #1 on the Canadian Hot 100, and it reached the top 10 in several other countries, including the UK (#5), Australia (#5), Ireland (#6), New Zealand (#1) and Scotland (#3).
This is, and always has been, a cute bop. I don't understand the massive hate for it, other than there being a guy on the song? Yes, the lyrics are dumb, the melodies are basic, the production is very 2012 and it's all very surface level. But that's the point! That's part of it's charm and what makes it so fun. There's not a lot here but there doesn't have to be. You just have to close your eyes, dance, and sing your butt off to every extremely catchy part. This is dance-pop in it's most fluffy, bubblegum, shallow form and I live for it every time I hear the song. Personally, my favorite element of the production is the guitar, but I also love the handclaps and piano melodies used throughout. This is waaayyyy too hated for what it's doing and it works brilliantly in my opinion. Could have been in the top 100 over some other songs to be honest.
Y'all had a
lot to say about this ddd.
@MilesAngel (1) doesn't like being told what to do:
The backing track is fine, although quite basic even for me! But I hate songs with lyrics trying to desperately convince me, that I'm going to be having a good time while listening to them. It's in the same category as 'I've Gotta Feelin' and 'Don't Stop Me Now.' It's not about you have a good time. It's about them having a good time. You don 't have to have a good time with them ddd. Also, I'm not linking those below ddd.
@fatyoshi (2) wants more Carly:
really tried with this one but Carly is such a non-presence on this. i just can't. Personally, even if her voice isn't, her energy is low-key all over this song in my opinion nn.
@SyPOPhantic (6.5) also wants more Carly:
Needs more Carly but nostalgia hits hard with this song and defines such an important time in my life. Her vocals are luscious and buttery. Yeah, she sounds fantastic here. And
@lilylu (6) would prefer only Carly:
It's fun! It would be better without Owl City! I mean, I guess but they don't make the song bad. Seems like
@pop3blow2 (7.9) is with you on this though:
Carly is fine here. Owl City’s voice though, just is like nails on a chalkboard for me. Personally, he doesn't bother me that much, but Carly sounds amazing enough for the both of them sooo yeah. And
@VitaminBee (6.9) rounds out this hat trick of comments:
If it was just Carly, this would have a higher score… but I need to suffer through Owl City too? No thank you. It feels so unbalanced. I disagree but I've made that clear by now sooo moving on ddd.
@LoveMachine (4) points out the obvious:
This is very "of its time", no? And? That criticism never makes sense to me ddd. Most music is "of it's time". Especially pop music.
@daninternational (7) also points this out:
More fond of this since my bf started playing it, but it's sooooo dated. The amount of songs that I could list as being dated but are classics dddd. That's why I don't understand. Not that this is a classic but it kinda is? Just saying.
@FunkyButChic (5.5) seems to feel similar:
Bop, but even in 2012 the millennial whooping felt lazy. I specifically didn't mention it in the write-up because of this comment, but Carly's "Whooooooo"s are amazing and iconic and no one will change my mind.
@CorgiCorgiCorgi (4) has given up:
I’ve been trying to give this song a chance for a decade now and it’s just not happening. Guess you don't know how to have a good time.
@Sprockrooster (10) does though:
My 11-runnerup. The sheer joy this track exudes is fantastic and infectious. Facts. And in case you were wondering, it would have left at #104 if you gavit your 11.
@unnameable (9) brings up a movie:
I saw the film “Teen Spirit” (where Elle Fanning enters a TV singing contest) and this song is used by the contestants, and it works surprisingly well. Reminds me, “Wild Flowers” is the Carly hit that never was. Is the movie good? Also facts, that should have been released by her. And
@eatyourself (9) is nostalgic:
I know this is cringe and christian pop adjacent but Owl City was an important part of my development as an emotional teenager and so I'm biased. Cringe is just an internet construct so you're fine ddd. Also, I don't understand how it's "christian pop adjacent"
And since so many of you wanted it:
(Yeah, even with just Carly, the song is still a solid 8.5 for me ddd.)
