Carrie Underwood

How long til she goes full Trump grifter now that she’s fully a flop and it’s an election year?

There one thing Carrie isn’t and that’s dumb. Her careers stagnant for now but she risks losing half her fanbase by running to the Trump side.

As much as we know she’s probably a deep rooted republican, she’s gonna toe the line to make sure her fanbase doesn’t know that, just like she’s been able to hide that she’s a massive nightmare behind the scenes.

Her tweets and Twitter/X likes tell a different story though.

Has she been very outspoken politically in the last 12 months?

I don't think she's ever really been open politically but her husband has been quite a MAGA person judging from his Twitter likes over the years. She also did like some anti-vax tweet at some point for what it's worth.

he/him
Since the Covid likes/tweets I think she’s gone back to not saying anything? I have no idea if the husband has done anything lately though and now likes are private she could be liking anything…

But I do feel like American Idol is an attempt to reposition herself and put out a more careful image again to try and win some fans back.

I didn’t realise but she’s doing the GMA concert series tomorrow so I wonder if there’s something coming as well, it would be odd to get her that just because she’s an Idol judge (but not impossible).

Her career has been in a really weird place for a while. Even at her peak, her career was built around bulletproof hits, stellar live performances and Carrie largely being a bit of a blank canvas for these songs to live through. She was never a great interview and has never really had a public persona, and that to a degree just let the music shine through.

I think post-Storyteller and switching labels there has been tangible decline in the music, and the back-to-back bare bones budget Christian album and holiday album did not help. People also soured on her quite heavily during the Cry Pretty era, rightly or wrongly, based on the huge PR narrative built around her disfigurement and return to the public eye - when she didn't look any different, it definitely sparked a backlash around how out of touch she was.

I think the broader issue is also the way that country music has been so politicised since 2016. I don't think the majority of country shows feel like a safe space for pop audiences anymore and leaving aside her sporadic Twitter likes (which I don't think the majority of people are aware of) her beige non-committal stance on politics feels more of an endorsement of the division we are facing right now, rather than a stance of neutrality.

At this point - I don't see Idol doing any harm as I don't think there is a huge amount for her to lose given where her career has settled.

Kelly covered Blown Away the other day, and it was almost like a shock to the system for me because I hadn't thought about Carrie in ages. She was so important to my life for such a long time, and now I never think about her or play her music. Before 2020 I would've considered Blown Away to be one of my favourite songs of all time (plus Something In the Water, Church Bells, and a whole bunch of others) and I haven't listened to any of them in years.

The Twitter-likes debacle and her lunatic husband (whose views she clearly cosigns even if she's not outspoken about it) soured me on her massively, but the quality control taking a nosedive after she left Arista for Capitol was legitimately insane. The Bible-thumping albums, the terrible single choices, the horrific art direction. There's such a clear divide to me between Some Hearts/Carnival Ride/Play On/Blown Away/Storyteller and then Cry Pretty/My Gift/My Savior/Denim & Rhinestones, those 4 albums sharing a total of like... 7 worthwhile songs.

I shouldn't get too brave because Kelly's music career has been just as much a mess for the past decade, but we still got a career-best album with Meaning of Life in all the wreckage and obviously she's still in the public eye (and also... a good person fff), but with Carrie it kinda feels like people really only cared about the hits, and now that those have dried up (and she hasn't successfully moved into the space that someone like Miranda Lambert occupies), they don't care about her. The country Katy Perry I fear, so I guess it's fitting that she's taking Katy's seat on Idol oop.

Cry Pretty definitely had some decent single choices on it (that naturally did not become singles), but they all leaned a little poppier and maybe that scared her/her people to test the waters with? Like Ghosts on the Stereo is a smash.

She's not very likable. And I know thats a loaded term, especially when it's applied to women. But I do think that has played a part in her public image.

I'm curious because I'm out of the loop. What is Miranda's space in the country scene these days?
Someone who is a more devoted country fan might say otherwise so I'm happy to be corrected here, but I feel like even though Miranda's hits/sales aren't what they used to be, she has the critics on her side and is still seen as a respectable artist. I feel like Carrie's stock has fallen much more severely because she was always about the hits, which is fine, but I don't think any album of hers has garnered the kind of reception that The Weight of These Wings received as an example. And also... it is a loaded topic as @Drew said, but Miranda comes off as more likeable in 2024 than Carrie.

I hadn't listed to the Blown Away album in quite a bit (8 years!!) until just now. This one makes me emotional every time, such a beauty:

She hasn't really made any political comments in her whole career, so I'm a bit sad she's really going in for this.
