'Cause You're My FavOriTe: PJ00s 16 - The Stan LOONA Edition: We Have A Winner!

Hello everyone.

And welcome to the LOONAVERSE.


The time has come for PJ00s 16, the contest where we make our fave flops from the 00's fight to the death to find out which is the superior underrated track.

However, this installment is going to be a bit different. @soratami and I have decided to embrace our mutual admiration for the talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show-stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique group known as LOOΠΔ, but before we explain to you who they are, let's take care of the formal stuff.


Here are the rules for your PJ00s 16 entries:

• must have been first released between 01.01.2000-12.31.2009
• no UK top 20 hits
• no US top 20 hits
• no tracks from a US or UK top 10 album
• no covers or prominent samples of famous songs
• no relatively famous/chart-successful cover versions of your desired entry (if it's the original version) recorded by a different act
• no songs (or covers of songs) that have competed in the Eurovision Song Contest (semi-finals or finals)
• relatively unknown/underrated on Popjustice - so as a general benchmark, nothing from an artist with more than 10 pages of discussion on PJ (across all their artist threads) - yep, this rule is back this round.
• no entry that has been previously entered in a previous round of PJ00s (list of past entries here), PJSC (see the wiki), or PJOPS (list of entries here; the '00s crossover round list can be found here). Additionally, no entry that has been previously vetoed in PJ00s (in general, these acts will most likely be vetoed again, unless the reason for the veto was that the song was previously entered in a different song contest).
• Songs that fail these objective criteria will vetoed by the round hosts. Songs that pass these criteria should be PMed to our esteemed veto panel (which this round, will consist of @berserkboi, @Empty Shoebox, and @Robsolete) for their decisions, with at least a 2/3 majority vote required for a song to be be included in the contest. The hosts will PM you to let you know if your song has passed or failed veto once the panel renders a verdict.

Repeat artists guideline:

• the same act (in any form - solo, group, featured, etc.) cannot be entered for FIVE rounds since their last appearance (i.e., a non-winning round 8 act can be reentered no sooner than round 13, and in round 9, non-winning acts from rounds 1-4 are generally eligible again)
• for the winner of each round, that artist cannot be entered again (in any form - solo, group, featured) for the subsequent TEN rounds
• if the same artist wins TWO rounds of PJ00s in any form (solo artist, group, feature, etc.), that artist is no longer eligible for future PJ00s rounds

For this edition of the contest, we have decided to teleport you to LOOΠΔ's homeground...

THE LOONAVERSE

But before we get any further, allow me to answer the big question that is on your minds.


Who is LOOΠΔ?



LOOΠΔ is a South Korean girl group formed by Blockberry Creative. Its twelve members were revealed in a periodic fashion, corresponding to their Korean name Idarui Sonyeo (이달의 소녀), which translates to "Girl of the Month". LOOΠΔ commenced their pre-debut project in August 2016, with each member releasing a promotional single over the next eighteen months, as well as forming three sub-units which also had their own releases: LOOΠΔ 1/3, LOOΠΔ Odd Eye Circle and LOOΠΔ yyxy. Their debut EP as a full ensemble, [+ +] was released on August 20, 2018, and was supported by the lead single FavOriTe and their official debut single Hi High. The group is famous for its extensive, lore-driven backstory which revolves around the girls from each sub-unit being awakened and finding each other within their own worlds. Despite each sub-unit inhabiting its own world, they all exist within the same universe, the LOONAVERSE. The subunits eventually unite and form LOOΠΔ.

And now for the other big question that you are all dying to know the answer to.


What is The LOONAVERSE?



The LOONAVERSE is a universe that exists on a möbius strip. The members of LOONA 1/3 reside on earth and portray realistic girls that can be found on streets or at schools. ODD EYE CIRCLE lives between earth and space, aka the middle earth. They display changing and mutative characteristics while suggesting love should be taken control of instead of being passive. Lastly, yyxy inhabit a 'utopia', known as 'Edenism', beyond earth and the middle earth. They decide to escape their 'Eden' in order to discover themselves.

Their lore is so extensive that fans have created very long videos trying to explain it all. In case any of you who are unfamiliar with the group think I'm kidding, well......the proof is in the pudding.

And those are just the first 3 videos in a fan-created series of over 30 videos that keeps growing as more and more music videos are released by the group.

Fly Like A Butterfly: The LXXΠΔ Tournament



While the opening post for this contest was very extensive, I didn't really go in-depth about LOOΠΔ's music. One of the many reasons that the group is as beloved and celebrated by fans and critics alike is that true to their multi-faceted and unique debut process and lore-fueled backstory, they have managed to create one of the most diverse discographies in K-Pop. I'd go as far as saying that they also have one of the most diverse discographies of any musical group period.

Sadly, we don't have the time to expose all of you who aren't already fans to all of the songs that the group has released thus far so you can get the full experience of their wonderfully diverse discography. That being said, @soratami and I have come up with a great little activity inspired by a select portion of the group's songs which includes the solo songs by the 12 members who are:



However, there is a twist as for this tournament you won't actually be deciding which LOOΠΔ song is the best one. We already did that in the ☽ Rate Talent. Rate LOOΠΔ. ☾ the pre-debut rate. I won't spoil the winner of the rate but just know that getting to the end was a bloody mess that nearly destroyed the entire sub-forum. Much like the little survival game I hosted called The K-Pop Hunger Games did.

Instead, in a not so subtle effort to get y'all to listen to more K-Pop in general, you will be voting on 32 K-pop songs from different girl groups that are similar to the 16 selected LOOΠΔ tracks in some form be it sonically, thematically, visually, etc... The 32 songs have been divided into 16 categories with each category being linked to one of the LOOΠΔ songs. While the tournament won't officially open until the voting period for the main contest starts, let me give you a little preview of what's in store.

As I explained in the opening post, all 12 LOOΠΔ girls got to debut as soloists with their own single so the first 12 categories are inspired by those songs. In some cases, we decided to go for the B-side from the girl's single album instead of the title track because we felt it was a more appropriate choice.

In the days leading up to the deadline of the voting period, we will be doing little write-ups for each of the match-ups in the first round of the tournament detailing the songs we have selected but for now, here are the 16 categories inspired by LOOΠΔ's releases, starting with the categories inspired by the 12 solo songs:
