Charli xcx - Brat

Is it her choice? Yes of course. And I have the right to judge her for that choice. You cannot tell me that pop stars shouldn’t be political when everyone, no matter their status, has a moral obligation to advocate for the freedom of the Palestinian people regardless of their celebrity or status. She’s not excluded just because she makes bops.

I don’t believe I said you shouldn’t judge her, did I? Not even an implication of it, or this idea that I believe pop stars shouldn’t be political. Quite the opposite! I would be wary about putting words in my mouth unless you see them written plainly in my posts. I’ve made my stance very well known across the forum, especially in defense of artists who do choose to be vocal and have seen push back and even smear campaigns in response to them being vocal. However, I’m also not going to lose sleep waiting for someone to do something that is so clearly not in their nature when I can be doing my own work in spreading awareness by educating myself and others around me. By all means, feel free to take up that fight. I’m not standing in your way.

Ended up getting tickets for the PARTYGIRL festival today on resale. I think this is the most I've ever seen an artist during a single album era dddd, but when in London (for Beyoncé on Monday), it seemed like a missed opportunity not to go. Hoping Addison is still in London and makes a surprise appearance.

Not during Unlock It! Glad she spoke up even if this is the barest of bare minimums

Jk. While this is still a nice thing to see considering she still surrounds herself with many Zionists, I think the ship for Charli XCX of all people becoming a politically vocal artist (especially when it comes to Palestine) has sailed a long time ago. Of course, I'd love to be proven wrong, and I'd love to see her change and utilize her platform more effectively, but I'm not going to lose sleep over it.

Because Netanyahu is shaking at the thought of Charli xcx tweeting a notes app statement about Gaza.
My point is everyone should be educating themselves and advocating for the Palestinian people regardless of their job, celebrity or status. I think the old hat “pop stars shouldn’t be forced to be activists” argument is lame in the face of GENOCIDE. Just my personal opinion. Acting like she doesn’t have a large platform and her speaking out more would be meaningless is silly when Palestinian activists have directly asked celebrities to speak out.

When I said “you cannot tell me” I was not directly referring to you. I meant it generally, it’s a turn of phrase. Sorry it came across that way - It was a general “you” like the royal version of we. I knew I’d get a response that her speaking out wouldn’t matter and I was certainly proven right.

But really, if it’s not in her nature then she should be held to task for that and surrounding herself with Zionists while trying to be like “omg Palestine! Heart hands.” You cannot have it both ways.

Again, just because she’s friends with shygirl doesn’t mean Zionists haven’t been profiting off her with her consent, which makes the “aww Palestine flag!” completely hypocritical and meaningless.

You are advocating for not expecting her to do more than she has and focusing on personal activism. I understand that, but I have no qualms trying to push her to do better and also do my own activism, they’re not mutually exclusive when virtually everyone needs to be doing more. Everyone.

I would love that too, but she's just not that person. I don't think she was even that vocal about things happening in the her own country (Brexit etc...). If anything, pointing out to a flag during a rave is the most on-brand thing she could do and probably more efficient than a generic Instagram story.

To be honest, everyone is falling short except the likes of The Weeknd, who actually donated money to Gaza because unfortunately and maybe I lost all hope but I don't think any amount of public pressure is going to change things.

Yeah, she’s not that vocal about anything political. I remember last year people were curious if she was going to speak about the racist attacks happening in the UK. Truthfully, can’t remember if she did or not in the end. Even the “Kamala is brat” thing was something she said she fired off as a joke without actually thinking about it being read as an endorsement. I just kind of lost hope that artists are going to speak up on Gaza. Most of them are cowards who still believe being against a genocide and Israel trying to start WWIII is a taboo position to have and are watching out for their bank accounts. I was really annoyed when Gaga didn’t say anything (which she still hasn’t) and it followed me for a bit until I just let it go. That’s not to say people shouldn’t be critical or demanding that artists use their voice and platform, but it’s just not where I’m choosing to put any of my energy anymore. I sleep at night knowing that they’ll eventually come around and regret not using their voice and there’s nothing they can do to heal their souls.

I agree with everything @mindtrappa said.

I know we should expect better but my expectations are rock bottom when it comes to artists having the guts to actually speak out about something when it impacts their bottom line (and I appreciate it is a very difficult thing for some of them to do given how the industry operates, particularly for those based in the US).

In Charli's defence she's not like Madonna, who loves to play the role of a freedom fighter and going against the grain, whilst saying next to nothing about the atrocities in Gaza. That's a particularly bitter pill to swallow.

This being in the wrong thread + the content of the post... scream.
He played at Charli's festival in London, but yeah probably not the right choice.

Incredible show, I was absolutely blown away. Her changing the outro to reframing brat from a summer fling to something that she'll have forever... Academy Award.

She killed it at the Lido. Her idgaf attitude was cranked to 100 but we also saw some softer moments when she took her shades off and interacted with bladeee. They accidentally played the original Rewind to begin with and Charli didn’t notice until a minute in so they had to restart. I was surprised at the set being 70 minutes when she was billed for 90. It’s a bit different to an average festival as it’s her festival, so would expect concert length.

It was a very well organised event for being a new festival. That being said, the sound was quiet and at times felt a bit more like background music. I much prefer seeing artists in an arena.

Yeah, the atmosphere at LIDO was amazing. A shame the set was a bit shorter than the BRAT tour, especially when it was billed as going on for 15-20 minutes longer than it actually did.

Also really glad I got to see her in London last year when she brought Robyn and Caroline seen as there were no guests yesterday.

Really think this all should have came to a head next weekend, get Troye out, Addison out, throw Lorde some bait, set the brat flag aflame. Glastonbury should have been the final hurrah it seems we’re heading towards.

The fact she’s doing a slew of other European festivals after Glastonbury when it’s clear she’s already tired with the show in question? Sometimes decline the cheque in exchange for The Moment©
