COMPLETE GARBAGE: The Discography Rate (WINNER!)

SHIRLEY MANSON
DUKE ERIKSON
STEVE MARKER
BUTCH VIG

KgbNiQ1.png
So said guitarist Steve Marker in the band's first UK interview back in 1994 to Volume magazine which also housed their debut recording Vow on the included CD. And although the band known as Garbage never really made good on the second part of that quote - though parts of Bleed Like Me and the mixing of Not Your Kind of People would come close - over the space of more than two decades, six albums and a wealth of b-sides and extra tracks, Shirley and the boys have certainly "take[n] pop music". Taken it and pummelled, sharpened and coaxed it according to their whim, be that incorporating crunching overdriven rock guitars, the programming and beats of electronica, spaced-out trip-hop or sugary sweet synths. As magnetic a prospect on stage as they are in the studio.

mK3FhdE.png

I'd be remiss not to mention Shirley Manson in my introductory post. Frontwoman. Force of nature. An often outspoken feminist, railing against sexism and patriarchy in the music industry. Champion of the freaks, geeks and weirdos. An icon. From a personal standpoint as a shy, geeky teen hearing Garbage's debut album and seeing Shirley's confident, striking appearance in their music videos sparked synapses in my brain and awoke in me what has become, and no doubt will be a lifelong obsession with music. So for that reason Garbage are, and probably will continue to be, one of my all-time favourite acts. And as the likes of last year's return-to-form Strange Little Birds album just goes to prove, they are still producing vital and electrifying material over twenty years since Steve happened upon a music video for Shirley's previous outfit Angelfish while watching MTV.

So why a rate now I hear you scream?

Well firstable a singles rate was started a lifetime ago by @D_ni and never finished, secondable the band themselves seem to be looking back over their career by releasing a lavish [price suggests this] retrospective coffee table book later this year, and thirdable it's literally just an excuse to revisit this wonderful band and their music.

THE RATE

Because I want your votes you have two options for this rate. You can score:
- just the singles if you're pressed for time or unfamiliar with the band.
- every damn thing!
  • Score each song between 0-10. Half points allowed. I have no problems handing out 0's in rates so neither should you if you feel a song deserves it. Unless it's a song from the first three albums in which case you can:
    rNBKlIe.gif
  • You have one 11 that you can hand out to your favourite song in the rate.
  • Commentary extremely welcome, at the very least a few words about your chosen 11 would be great.
Voting will close in six weeks time at 6pm BST on Monday July 3rd.

When you are ready to start handing your scores in, just PM them to me. You can send them to me album by album if you wish.

This is going to be a marathon, not a sprint so for my own sanity I'll be looking for guest reveals along the way. So if there are any song/s you'd particularly like to have the pleasure of revealing also let me know in the PM.

There'll be laughs [citation needed], tears and gifs so get rating!

Oh, also, can I post Shirley's flawless and magnificent shutdown of Madonna's detractors here? It's not exactly relevant to the rate per se but it needs to be seen.
The tabloids complain about Madonna looking old, and people laugh at her for that. Then Madonna goes and fixes her face, and they laugh at her for that. Even though they begrudgingly say she looks amazing, they’ll still laugh at her for trying to look young. Then she steps out, looking amazing, and the tabloids go and blow up a picture of her aging hand. Nobody’s doing that to George Clooney, blowing up pictures of his hands! I look at these magazines, and I want to say to them, ‘What’s your point? That she’s aged? Does that surprise you? Or is your ‘point’ an attempt to undercut what she’s achieved?’ I think it is, even if it’s on a subconscious level. … And you probably wouldn’t turn down those hands if they were grabbing you under the table, you fucking idiots!"
Fucking QUEEN. The fact that she respects and/or is friends with like...almost all of my other faves - M, Tori Amos, Gwen Stefani, Marina...it's like it was meant to be. An actual hero.

To any hunties daunted about the fact the G-sides portion could be a rate in and of itself, a lot of the b-sides are only a couple of minutes long and you won't need more than a couple of listens to score most of them. I mean for some, like I'm Really Into Techno, you'll probably only really need the one listen before you give it the obvious 10 it deserves.

I already know everything inside out, bar the very last song that I didn't even know existed! I'll be doing the fucking lot, and writing commentary for it all as well (poor @NecessaryVoodoo).

Oh, and to all you fairweathers who don't know Subhuman: listen to it until you know it before scoring. If it falls out early due to unfamiliar syndrome I'll be tracking you down like a bloodhound with La Manson in tow!!!

Oh I didn't know about Love Like Suicide which I'll add thanks, but Badass was only ever a demo and Wild Horses was a live version which I've steered clear of when making the list of what to rate.
