AVERAGE SCORE: 5.904
HIGHEST SCORE: 10 x 2 (@A&E, @Sprockrooster)
LOWEST SCORE: 2 x 1 (@bichard)

OK I think I was a bit stingy with my 5.5 here. I've listened to All The Good In This Life more since I scored it and it's a grower. I can visualise it as the emotional soundtrack to some finale scene in a TV show or something. If you told me this was a cover of like...a Neil Young song I wouldn't even second guess it. Originally meant to be a b-side to Tell Me Where It Hurts, it later appeared on iTunes and then as part of the Songs For Tibet: The Art of Peace charity compilation. A compilation which also included Alanis Morissette performing an exclusive rendition of Versions of Violence recorded in a Cologne dressing room. Waow. You don't get content like that on every charity compilation folks!

@Sprockrooster: Very early Texas (Mothers Heaven) era and I am here for it for all obvious reason.

@sfmartin: This is very very good.

CONFIDENCE
AVERAGE SCORE: 5.904
HIGHEST SCORE: 10 x 1 (@heartmightmelt)
LOWEST SCORE: 0 x 1 (@etienne)

Confidence was a beautifulgarbage cast off, found on CD3 of the Breaking Up The Girl single and the only thing I can really say about it is it SOUNDS like a CD3 kind of b-side. It's nice to hear Shirley deliver a more sultry whispered vocal though and the squally guitar motif that is repeated throughout gives the song a bit more pep but...yeah.

@sfmartin: A like where they are going with this, but as it is it's half baked.

@digitalkaiser: This is shirley’s erotica-esque moment.

WHERE DO THE CHILDREN PLAY?
AVERAGE SCORE: 5.942
HIGHEST SCORE: 10 x 3 (@Andy French, @Oleander, @Sprockrooster)
LOWEST SCORE: 2 x 1 (@bichard)

The most recent Garbage song in our rate manages to limp in at #105. This cover of a Cat Stevens song was featured on a 2017 compilation, Music To Inspire: Artists UNited Against Human Trafficking, to raise money for the United Nations Voluntary Trust Fund to help victims of human trafficking. Originally recorded as an acoustic version that closely matched the mood of the Cat Stevens original, the band weren't that pleased with the finished product so Butch retooled it, removing all the instrumentation and building up atmospheric electronics around Shirley's vocals until sonically it could've slotted in to Strange Little Birds. This is actually really haunting and another song I feel like I underscored, sorry about it 10 pointers!

@Sprockrooster: A great cause and a fantastic rendition from the Cat Stevens renditions. Very scary instrumental that empowers the song's message brilliantly.

@sfmartin: Interesting cover, very atmospheric but not my bag.

@digitalkaiser: I like the sentiment of this charity sort of song, but I’m not sure if the sound is the right fit. It’s certainly interesting.

@AshleyKerwin: I feel bad for giving the charity singles or Record Store Day stuff mediocre scores but eh.

@Oleander: Very powerful and moving.

Sex might never go out of fashion but this b-side from CD1 of the Shut Your Mouth single sure did huh? Again it's another of those g-sides that I don't really care enough about to find anything of worth to say about and it appears you lot are the same with only two people submitting commentary for it. But I'm sure @bichard will be along to tell us why we're all heathens for kicking it out already!

@Sprockrooster: That title didn't deserve this song.

@sfmartin: Quite painful in parts to listen to.

All the Good in This Life I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE. That faux vinyl rip effect really hurts my ears.
Sex Never Goes Out of Fashion is fun, but I forget it exists.
Where Do The Children Play bores me. The Cat Stevens original is so much better, this just sounds like it was forced to sound like the era, rather than make a good go of it.

CONFIDENCE though. I ADORE that song. There's so much going on in the background, lots of little sounds and pockets of samples, and that bassline and widescreen synth. Hate you all.

You lot obviously have not experienced human feelings in your lives! This gets me in my feelings every time.

Dddd it also had Suzanne Vega's Song of Sand in an alternative version that (if I recall correctly) sounded just like the original.

I don't know about that but I know I will! Garbage sounding like Bongo Bong x All Saints' Rock Steady? How the hell can you not love it?? Especially with the line "flip a switch and she's crying out her own name".

Also the shade of my two faves here not even getting a gif to go with the artwork, smh.

Oh no! Sex Never Goes Out Of Fashion didn't deserve to go, it's definitely one of their best G-sides. Better than a lot of what's still in! I hope Afterglow and Deadwood are not on the chopping block just yet.

I really like what they did with Where Do The Children Play as well. It does sound a lot like a Strange Little Birds track.

I'm on the struggle bus driving between loving it that the g-sides are included in this rate because they finally get recognition in a rate for their brilliance and also hating that the g-sides are included because the order in which we are getting rid of them is leaving me confused.

Would all the "had never heard most of the g-sides, so listened to 20 or 30 seconds and voted on them anyway" peeps please stand up?

Recap #2

112. I Just Wanna Have Something To Do - 9 - The opening riff had me at hello, I'll tell you that. Reminds me of one of my favorite all-girl punk bands like Go Betty Go. Finding out that it was a The Ramones cover now makes perfect sense.

111. Candy Says - 5 - Now reading the comments, I get the So Like a Rose comparisons but this doesn't have an ounce of emotion. It kind of drones on a tad, sorry.

110. Love Like Suicide - 7 - The chorus and how it explodes onto the scene really makes the song, but it feels like a tiny bit of a chore to get there.

109. What Girls Are Made Of - 10 - Oh Lord, how did I know from the very second I insta-10'ed this, that it would be thrown to the wolves unfairly? I also knew that the "clunky" lyrics would be the likely culprit. I'm sorry but it's audio artwork as far as I'm concerned. Poignant, to-the-point lyrics are always going to win the day for me especially when they have an edge to them like they do here. Take the fact that I love the overall theme behind the song and it's style, then add sublime catchiness and you have a winner.

107. All The Good In This Life - 5 - I think @Sprockrooster probably hit it on the head: early Texas realness and I'm honestly apathetic towards it like this. Love the story about the Alanis song recorded from a restroom. Wow!

107. Confidence - 4 - With everyone going on in the Demi thread today...that cover art! *dead*. Unfortunately, like the favorite word of the day there "half-baked" reigns supreme with this one. I didn't really like the whispered vocals at first and I'm still not feeling it, plus the guitar-thing is mildly irritating to me.

106. Where Do The Children Play? - 5 - Very chilling soundtrack, especially with the actions it speaks against but ultimately a "zzzz" experience.

105. Sex Never Goes Out Of Fashion - 3 - Too many cringy "backdoor"-type references with Shirley sounding kind of drunk at times to be honest. And what in the actual fuck is that chorus supposed to be saying? And just why in general...keep it.
