COMPLETE GARBAGE: The Discography Rate (WINNER!)

How has no one clocked these shenanigans yet?!?!?

Get taste.

Agh. It's a right dullard. It could sit alongside Sheryl Crow's No One Said It Would Be Easy and not sound out of place. Snooze.

Minor loss with Time Will Destroy Everything, but as someone else said, they really could have made more of that riff.

I actually grew to appreciate On Fire more thanks to the rate, but I think I still only gave it a 4.

Girls Talk was one of my favourite pre-NYKOP snippets, and it would probably be great without The Dalleik. When she starts her bellowing it totally ruins it for me.

I only have one ten left from the G-Sides you heathens! I should've known that the growling vocals would scare everyone away. Despite not knowing who Brody was, it's easy for me to appreciate her considering I've been known to listen to bands like In This Moment.

Before the moment passes, time for a The Distillers' Coral Fang #appreciation post!

OK carry on!

On Fire - sounds like The Carpenters doing a sci-fi soundtrack. It's a little bit boring but I can get into it when I'm in the mood. I really like the Nobody's Perfect style Mmm Mmm Mmms at the end.

Girls Talk - average, and then Brody ruins it with her growls. I much prefer her song with Shirley "Meet The Foetus / Oh The Joy".

Time Will Destroy Everything - Shirley claims to love this, and says it sounds like what Blade Runner would be if it was a musical piece instead of visual. There's much to love but it's let down by not really going anywhere. That fantastic song title though, I have to confess, I have a soft spot for, because I once asked Shirley via Facebook to drop a song title (before the band had revealed any titles for the new songs) and she responded with the title of this.

I gave each of these a 6. I was probably being very kind to Girls Talk.

BUTTERFLY COLLECTOR
AVERAGE SCORE: 6.212
HIGHEST SCORE: 9.5 x 1 (@AllGagaLike)
LOWEST SCORE: 2 x 1 (@digitalkaiser)

OK now it's my turn for one of these...

YOU HEATHENS!

Butterfly Collector has been one of my favourite g-sides since the first time I heard it many years ago and it deserved to go a bit further than some of the others we've got left. Gothy, doomy, melodramatic, with those propulsive chorus sections yas! I didn't actually know until doing these write-up's that it was actually a cover of a song by The Jam which coincidentally was also a b-side on their 1979 single Strange Town. Call me a flop fan I guess.

In Paul Weller's hands it reads like a bitter kiss off to an ex whereas with Shirley's delivery I always get the feeling that she's turning the song in on herself and railing against her own self-loathing. Relatable queen.

@sfmartin: definite shades of what was to come in Beautiful Garbage. A few too many parts that don't fit together.

@digitalkaiser: This was always a bit too goth rock for me, but I’m sure there is someone who likes it.

@Filler: I've never heard this song before this rate, and now it's the one Garbage song I can't get out of my head

@AshleyKerwin: Does anyone else hear a little bit of Frozen by Madonna in this? No? Okay.

@Oleander: Shirley’s voice is a bit too obscured at times.

i don't even know what i'm doing anymore help. But i'm pretty sure this was a Deee-Lite single cover at some point.

FELT
AVERAGE SCORE: 6.222
HIGHEST SCORE: 10 x 1 (@heartmightmelt)
LOWEST SCORE: 3 x 1 (@etienne)

Taking the prestigious 100 spot is this from Not Your Kind Of People. Song Exploder did an episode with Butch, Shirley and Billy Bush about Felt and of all the tracks on NYKOP she doesn't really deserve it to be honest, although it is quite interesting listening to what they were going for and makes this write-up a bit easier. Named after the alt-rock band of the same name, Shirley wanted the song to sound atmospheric and sonic cathedral-y, kind of like a Cocteau Twins track refracted through the Garbage filter, which incidentally made it come out sounding like a budget My Bloody Valentine. Kevin Shields is shook. The adlib that appears in the middle of the song and again at the end was Shirley channelling Siouxsie, specifically from the Banshees track Drop Dead/Celebration fact fans.

@Sprockrooster: This is one big yawn.

@sfmartin: This is so poorly mixed I can't understand a word, it's just a mess of noise. But mostly I like the noise.

@digitalkaiser: I like the smoothness of this song, but I like Shirley’s vocals to be more prominent. I love the that the title feels like it could be on self titled. Yas. (I stan obviously)

@AshleyKerwin: I think I generally liked their laid back stuff more on this album.

@A&E: Is this the band’s take on shoegaze of just poor mixing and mastering again? We might never know.

@constantino: Woah this is BAD. The decay is real

Wow, Felt sounds nothing like Felt and sounds exactly like Siamese Dream era Smashing Pumpkins. I love how different it is from their other stuff and it's one of my favorites off NYKOP.

Felt is shit. Butterfly Collector is shit.

Both should have gone long before the gloriousities of Sex Never Goes Out Of Fashion, Get Busy With The Fizzy and various other GarbageWonders.

Cooking Funts etc...

I fucking hate myself for not sending in my scores even though they were ready (with commentary). I still want to be a part of this, so I'm going to respond to each elimination and post my scores and commentaries. I hope thats okay with you @NecessaryVoodoo

TORNADO
AVERAGE SCORE: 4.404
This got a 7 from me.
My comments: Like I said before (i.e. with reference to Alien Sex Fiend), they made b-sides with the intention of making b-sides. This was a bold one - I'm sure nobody expected a disco track from them... it may not be "disco" but at the time, i definitely thought this was disco.

I'M REALLY INTO TECHNO
AVERAGE SCORE: 4.538
Not surprised to see this go. This is the only b-side I don't care about.

It got a 5 from me.
My comments: I'm glad they kept it short.

GET BUSY WITH THE FIZZY
AVERAGE SCORE: 4.885
Blasphemy! This is a fucking 10!
My comments: This was experimental and fun. It showed us a side of Garbage that we don't see on their albums. I love it! This will probably end up in the top 90, which will be a shame.

And here I was thinking this would be in the top 90. Heathens, the lot of you.

ALIEN SEX FIEND
AVERAGE SCORE: 5.100
As expected.

I gave it a 7.
My comments: I won't be surprised if this one leaves first. Over the years I've seen so much hate for this song - and I've never really understood it. Its experimental shit like this that makes Garbage such a special band to me. They weren't afraid of showing the world that they weren't just a band, but a group of 3 producers and a singer. I wish they'd make more songs like this (actually, I wish the concept of b-sides makes a comeback soon)

HAPPINESS PT. 2
AVERAGE SCORE: 5.100
I gave this a 6.5.
My comments: I love that they decided to keep the "Part 2" bit even on the title. Love the "oh holy shit" bit.

WHY DON'T YOU COME OVER
AVERAGE SCORE: 5.630
Seriously, ya'll have no taste. This cannot be the first album track to leave the thread. What the fuck!

My score: 10
My comments:
This is bonkers, almost like Garbage does punk, with a little wink. There's a little back story to this - Garbage's label hated this song and didn't want it on the album but Garbage loved it. Considering the general hate for all things related to Bleed Like Me on this forum, I'd like to see where this ends up.

CAN'T SEEM TO MAKE YOU MINE
AVERAGE SCORE: 5.673
I had no idea this was a cover

I gave this an 8
My comments:
I'm absolutely certain some people are going to say nasty things about this because of the vocal effect. I actually love it! Like I said before (i.e. with reference to Alien Sex Fiend and Tornado), they made b-sides with the intention of making b-sides. They were always so experimental on their b-sides. Gotta appreciate that.

SPACE CAN COME THROUGH ANYONE
AVERAGE SCORE: 5.788
WHAT THE HELL!

I gave this a 10
My comments:
I'm guessing this will be the last track from the Bleed Like Me era to be cut. Its such a fun little track, very Version 2.0 inspired. I like the part-psychadelic-part-funk-part-pop-part-rock feel that this song has. I think they did something similar years later on Blood For Poppies.

I JUST WANNA HAVE SOMETHING TO DO
AVERAGE SCORE: 5.808
I gave this a 7
My comments:
Servicable bop.

CANDY SAYS
AVERAGE SCORE: 5.827
This was my only 0.
My comments: What were they thinking? I just can't stand this song. I'd never rate a Garbage song a 0, but this one genuinely deserves it.

LOVE LIKE SUICIDE
AVERAGE SCORE: 5.846
My score: 5
My comments:
I'm okay with it being a Japanese bonus track. It wasn't good enough to be on the album anyway.

WHAT GIRLS ARE MADE OF
AVERAGE SCORE: 5.852
My score: 3
My comments:
I don't like this one at all. Its awkward. The RSD releases that came after should have been bonus tracks instead.

ALL THE GOOD IN THIS LIFE
AVERAGE SCORE: 5.904
My score: 6

I didn't have a comment for the song

CONFIDENCE
AVERAGE SCORE: 5.904
I didn't expect it to go far... alas!

My score: 9
My comments:
This song is pure sex. Confession - I've actually jacked off to this song and played it in the background while watching porn. Sorry if I ruined the song for anyone. I love the instrumental. I wish they put a little more effort into the lyrics and made this an album track instead.

WHERE DO THE CHILDREN PLAY?
AVERAGE SCORE: 5.942
Not fussed at this one leaving..

My score: 6
My comments:
I had no idea this song existed until this rate. Flop fan!

SEX NEVER GOES OUT OF FASHION
AVERAGE SCORE: 5.942
Not surprised, again

My score: 10
My comments:
This such a fun little song. Their b-sides are pure quality. They're being intentionally cheeky on this. I'd like to see where this ends up in the rate.

You people don't deserve Garbage.

ON FIRE
AVERAGE SCORE: 5.981
My score: 6
My comments:
I get what they were going for, but they didn't do it right.

TIME WILL DESTROY EVERYTHING
AVERAGE SCORE: 5.981
My score: 9
My comments:
Better than the A-side. It should have been a bonus track on the album, instead of the actual awful bonus tracks we got.

GIRLS TALK (FEAT. BRODY DALLE)
AVERAGE SCORE: 6.031
My score: 5
My comments:
Brody ruins the song for me. Their voices don't go togther.

BUTTERFLY COLLECTOR
AVERAGE SCORE: 6.212
My score: 5
My comments:
This one is overrated. I used to like it a lot too, but I think I liked the sound of the song more than the actual song itself.

FELT
AVERAGE SCORE: 6.222
My score: 7.5
My comments:
I used to actively hate this song when the album was released. But it has since grown on me. This one and the closer are the lowest rated tracks from the album for me.
