COMPLETE GARBAGE: The Discography Rate (WINNER!)

Aww, I'm sad for Show Me although I realized the deluxe tracks from that album aren't gonna be safe. Not Your Kind of People is weird for me because that and Beloved Freak remind me of the whole 'Trevor Project/Born This Way' inspirational pop but they both fall short. I think they're both good songs but I never feel how I'm supposed to when I listen to them.

I'm starting to think I might have to stop following this thread as I'm not sure it's good for my mental health.

Show Me is easily one of the best things from the NYKOP era and is leagues ahead of the standard closer, Beloved Freak, which is a cloying mess. The album proper would have closed out much better with Show Me instead. It builds wonderfully, until all those guitars kick in and I'm in Garbage heaven.

As a side note, in terms of the NYKOP bonus tracks, don't we still have The One to go, or have I missed its departure?

What really hurts though, is the loss of Trip My Wire. It's simply amazing and by far the best b-side from the debut era. I love the fact that it kind of bridges the gap between the sound of the debut and V2, what with it being recorded too late for inclusion on the former. Maybe it's too inherently linked to my teenage years and early Garbage obsession, where I was obsessed with them and in the first flush of discovering their amazing b-sides, but really, even considering the fact that it's a lesser-known song, I truly expected it to make top 40. Colour me shocked.

The other two I'm less bothered about, although I think they're far better than many tracks that remain.

She/her
The Chemicals and Trip My Wire are big losses for me. Now that untouchable has gone, beautifulgarbage can remain untouched until the top 30

Can I just say what a stirling job @NecessaryVoodoo is doing? I'm learning loads from the commentary, especially on the minor songs I knew little about.
Thanks very much! I know the results aren't to everyone's tastes but I see the same people liking every elimination post nonetheless which is much appreciated, but is this going OK for everyone so far? I'm hoping to get to #80 tonight and then I'll give you an update on what's left so y'all can argue over which songs should be gone already.

DRIVING LESSON
AVERAGE SCORE: 6.731
HIGHEST SCORE: 10 x 2 @heartmightmelt, @nikkysan)
LOWEST SCORE: 4 x 3 (@DJHazey, @JamesJupiter, @LE0Night)

"This is a song about when you're really, really, really into somebody and you just want to run away from everybody and everything and you fantasise about escape" so said Shirley introducing Driving Lesson on the 20 Years Queer tour and it's still one of their catchiest g-sides with that farty sounding bass, the almost breakbeat sounding drums and chorus imploring us to GET IN THE CARRRRRRRRRRRR! Anytime with you Shirley!

@Sprockrooster: This one was flipping scores easily. Ranging from a 4 to a 7. But the rush in the production is definitely saving this. But what is up with that horny vocals?!

@sfmartin: I had never heard this before the rate. It's so random but I do like it.

MAN ON A WIRE
AVERAGE SCORE: 6.759
HIGHEST SCORE: 10 x 2 (@Andy French, @constantino)
LOWEST SCORE: 3.5 x 1 (@magictreehouse)

Coming in sounding like a stomping Peaches track, Man On A Wire from Not Your Kind Of People kicks off with a guitar riff that had popped into Steve Marker's head at home which he rushed to record with a basic drumbeat from "some dumb machine [he] had". That riff then didn't get used for the longest time, until it was married up with verses Butch and Shirley had been working on for another song. In the song-by-song interview for the album, Steve complimented Shirley's delivery in this one:

“I really love Shirley’s vocal, the way she channels Patti Smith. The words are all hers. If we didn’t have such a great front person, none of this stuff would work. She used to – like we all did – worry about stuff and belabor things past the point where it would do anybody any good. I think she works more off the cuff now, more immediate. It gives everything a fresh feeling.”

It's another Not Your Kind Of People track I'm not too bothered seeing going at this point, but I have grown to like it a bit more listening to it on a loop while I type this up, so success, I guess?

@Sprockrooster: Keep it.

@constantino: C’mon White Stripes! C’mon early PJ Harvey! I live, go all the way off, sis!

@sfmartin: I like many of the parts of this song. The chorus knocks, but it's nothing we haven't heard before. That being said the energy is really infectious.

@digitalkaiser: “YEAH. I SEE YOU SITTING AROUND.” Yas at this spoken word middle 8. W I G.

@magictreehouse: What a racket.

@AshleyKerwin: Some of these up tempos are starting to feel a little repetitive.

KICK MY ASS
AVERAGE SCORE: 6.769
HIGHEST SCORE: 4 x 10 (@blissteria, @etienne, @Remorque, @tylerc904)
LOWEST SCORE: 3 x 1 (@bichard)

A Vic Chesnutt cover recorded for the 1996 Sweet Relief II: Gravity of the Situation charity album to raise funds for the Sweet Relief Fund which helps musicians in need of health care, Kick My Ass came about after Vic taught Shirley the song when Angelfish toured the states with him. The song and Vic also have special memories for Garbage, as it was that tour where Butch, Steve and Duke came and met Shirley for the first time and asked her to come to Wisconsin and audition for the band.

The cover was recorded in January of 1996 in-between rehearsals for Garbage's first tour.

A video for the song, featuring the band performing an acoustic rendition at MTV's An Evening Of Sweet Relief was playlisted on music channels at the time to promote the album.

Kick My Ass was remastered and included on the 20th anniversary edition of the debut album.

@etienne: A bit of a HTF track back in the day. My OCD was finally quenched when it appeared on the 20th anniversary issue of the debut.

@tylerc904: I absolutely adore this mellow little tune. “You said I ruined your life. I didn’t mean to do that” is an amazing lyric.

@sfmartin: This makes me think of Buffy, much like a lot of their songs. It's a bit all over the place but I don't mind that much.
