Hey, remember me?
I've got so much, just come and get me
I played something catchy
You leaned forward and kissed me
First I take you then you take me
Breathe some life into a fantasy
Your lips, warm and fuzzy
I want to run my fingers up your puusssssssaaaaaay
FYC #4 - Fever Ray - Plunge
I’d like to start with an anecdote: back in early October I was plugging with my good Judies (as one does), when someone queued ‘When I Grow Up’ by Fever Ray from her phenomenal 2009 self-titled debut, which continues to snatch wigs to this very day. In the chat I mentioned my excitement about her upcoming new music (the only indication of which being her updating her pics on social media, kii). In response,
@NecessaryVoodoo shot my hopes and dreams right out the sky by suggesting that there would not be another Fever Ray album for years…
FAST FORWARD LIKE 3 DAYS: She drops a cinematic album trailer featuring new music (a snippet of what later turned out to be 'This Country'), then an incredible video for the incredible ‘To The Moon And Back’ just a few days later and as if that wasn’t enough, Miss Karin came the fuck through and BEYONCÉ’d the entire damn album. Unfortunately, this all happened after the thread had been made and the song list had been finalised. To be honest though, even if it came before I don’t think I would’ve included it anyway. It has some great pop moments, but overall it wouldn’t have fared well, plus there was not enough content to give the tracks the write ups they deserve. HOWEVER, I probably would’ve put To The Moon and Back in the extras section bc BOP. After not being 100% sold on ‘This Country’ from the snippet, hearing something so glittery, uplifting and almost ethereal from Karin was a genuine moment of giving the gays everything they want.
This whole full-throttle approach of the roll-out carried through to the album itself in many ways; overall I’d call this a more urgent and aggressive approach than her debut. ‘Wanna Sip’ goes ALL the way off and proves that Miss Karin had no intentions of leaving me with even a morsel of hair. I love me some apocalyptic reverberating laser synths and Miss Thang delivered’t. ‘IDK About You’ is similarly bop-tastic with its shuddering percussion, giving it an almost tribal sound...in the least culturally appropriative way possible, in the true Sverige style. The title track, despite being an instrumental, might be one of the most accessible and dance-able track she’s ever done, whew!
Rather than a total departure from her seminal and genre-defining debut, there is plenty here for OG stans to get their life to. ‘Mustn’t Hurry’, 'Mama's Hand' and ‘A Part of Us’ in particular would’ve felt at home on
Fever Ray. Conversely, you have ‘Red Tails’, an unexpected and riveting ode to Balkan and Eastern instrumentation, which as a Eurovision stan and life-long lover of the Balkan ballad, is 100% my jush. A Fever Ray project wouldn’t be complete without something left-field and fresh, and Miss Karin didn’t disappoint me in the slightest. Overall, Karin does an excellent job of bringing exciting new ideas to the table whilst also appeasing those who simply wanted a follow-up to
Fever Ray.
The jury is still out regarding if it even holds a candle to the incredible artistic achievement that was her debut, but it’s only been like a month so umma chill and just enjoy this gift. I have a feeling this baby is gonna be on heavy rotation this winter so I want to give it the time and attention it deserves. I’m a bit gutted that I didn’t get the chance to put To The Moon And Back in the extras section, but y’all would’ve only done it wrong anyway so whatever xx
