FYC #5 - Vagabon - Infinite Worlds

This is only gonna be a short one from me because it's late and I have a lot of shit to sort out this week so you're just gonna have to deal with it xx. Although, it's also kinda apt because this is the shortest album that I will be covering in the FYC section; clocking at only 28 minutes, it's only too long to be considered an EP by 8 minutes. Don't let that fool you, Infinite Worlds is one of the most important records of the year and demands your full attention, albeit for only 28 short minutes.

The most important thing about Laetitia Tamko, besides her incredible talent, is that she is a black woman in what is a genre dominated by white men. Tamko was born in Cameroon (Camerrrooooooooonn) and moved to New York aged 13, where she taught herself how to play guitar with a Fender her parents bought her from Costco - talent! Although some may say that her talent should be the only thing you should take notice of when observing a musician, I can't help but be enamoured by her story and who she is as a woman of colour shining and thriving in a space that society tells her that she shouldn't exist in. Her vocals have a smokey tone that bring life to these DIY guitar rock songs, which have taken on a whole new importance in my life as the days get longer and the nights get colder.

Tamko's fearlessness and refusal to conform to expectations nor one single genre is a defining feature of this album. It's full of twists and turns - key changes, explosive choruses, pregnant pauses, French interludes...there are so many intricate details packed into 8 tracks. Every song has its own texture, its own flow and its own energy, making it an enthralling and dynamic listen. My personal favourite is the deceptively upbeat punk moment 'Minneapolis', which captures her just rocking out and having a great time, meaning the track radiates warmth in a time of year when we all desperately need it. On the other end of the spectrum, 'Cold Apartment' has a cosy, intimate feel to it, rooted (rather unconventionally) in watching someone you still care for move on with someone new. "I know it's my fault, I gave up on everything / And I see you happy, It warms my heart, my heart" - Adele found rotting!

Despite delving into deep themes such as love, loss and identity, Tamko never wallows. “I feel so small / My feet can barely touch the floor / On the bus where everybody is tall” she sings on the opening track 'The Embers', yet there is a sense of defiance behind her words - she's still on that damn bus. Despite being a small fish in a sea full of cunty sharks, she keeps on swimming and living her best life, refusing to play petty shark games. This is a philosophy I have taken on board in my life currently. In fact, there is a lot to be learnt and inspired by on this short, yet remarkable record.

Finally settled on my Vincent and Muna scores. I really love one, and don't really care that much about the other.

Tove would have a higher average than both if she were in this.

Okay so I'm going to do another bit on this rate. I'm currently listening to Lana's album.

I'm really struggle to write commentaries on most of these songs so I think I'm just going to do a rating for the majority of them.
