COMPLETE - The Indie/Alt Pop/Not-quite-'Mainstream'-but-still-accessible Girls 2017 Rate!!1

Awww You Never Knew was one of my highest rated HAIM songs... I'd say I'm sad to see it go but given how few HAIM songs are left I guess that's a victory of sorts.

This rate has me all over the place. On one hand I'm happy to see St. Vincent and Lorde doing so well but on the other, I'm really concerned about this Charli cull that is happening.

St. Vincent needs to chill, quite frankly.
We really need to lose a few St. Vincent songs.

Annie has the gorls pressed, I see

Finally! I don't hate this track by any means but I really don't think it deserved to make it this far in the rate. It's my least favourite song on the album and in hindsight a 7 was quite generous - especially now that I know it outlasted the likes of White Mustang and Coachella. To my initial joy, it was originally the first Lana song to be out by quite some margin and didn't get many 10s until the later stages of voting. To my surprise, it very nearly sneaked into the top 60, but thankfully that didn't happen.

If anything, it suffers from Lust For Life's sequencing because it follows what is a very similar but superior trap infused track (which even features the same artist). I would prefer both this and Summer Bummer if they weren't back to back; I know a lot of people like that the album is sonically split in two but I would rather the trap and pop tracks were scattered a bit better. It also really doesn't help that the two buzz tracks premiered back-to-back on Zane Lowe's Beats 1 show, which made it even more difficult to judge this track individually. In an interview with BBC Radio 1 on July 12, 2017, Del Rey stated that "Groupie Love" was the first collaboration that her and A$AP Rocky did together for the album and that she had sent him about four songs that she wanted him to contribute to. I must say how much I love the way Lana brings in rappers as genuine collaborators, rather than copy and pasting a canned verse from 2 Chainz or T-Pain with little-to-no communication. That said, I find A$AP's verse here lacklustre and low-energy compared to his verse on Summer Bummer, so I really don't think this should've even made it onto the album in the first place.

Jackarywoo (3) denounces this as 'the poor man's Summer Bummer', which is is pretty savage considering he only gave the latter a 5.

GimmeWork (4) was unimpressed: Too boring to inspire any love from me, much less groupie love. Can't win them all, I guess...

Trouble in Paradise (6) incorrectly hails this as the better of A$AP’s two features: I feel like this is the vibe “Summer Bummer” wanted but missed. A$AP works so much better here and brings life into the song.

Whhhaaaaaaaaaaaattttt arrrrreeee yooouuuu taaaalkkkinnng abbbbooouuuttt x 2 mokitsu (7)?? ‘This is good but the hook gets annoying. As always, great production.’

Even Lana stan happiestgirl only gave this a 7! My lowest scoring Lana song. I find it kind of plodding and I dislike the A$AP feature.

Bleedingheart80 (7): I actually like how ethereal her voice sounds here. Why wouldn't you?

Fantasy (7.5) also takes issue with the chorus and A$AP's feature: I absolutely love the smoothness of this and her voice is like honey, it works so perfectly with the production. The verses are my favourite part though because that drawn out ‘groupie loooooove’ changes the pace of the song a bit too much. Also not a big fan of A$AP Rocky’s rap either.

Bangers&Bops (8) chooses to see the best in A$AP's verse: A more soulful turn than “Summer Bummer," this Rocky duet contemplates the life of a groupie as she has to share her man with the rest of the world.

sfmartin (8), despite their 8, acknowledges that this is one of the worst on the album: I like this a lot but just because of the sheer quality of the album it falls near the bottom of the album for me. But it's still captivating and such dreamy song to get lost in.

I can't help but feel that Soratami (9) was being a bit...generous? In an album full of excellent features, this one is the only one that doesn't really add anything to the song. But Lana and the song itself sound great regardless.

Michael17 (9) REACHES by likening this to one of Lana's very best: A sweet and calm melody which I love. Reminds me a bit of “Radio” which is my favorite Lana song. The harmonies are orgasmic. Very underrated. This is one where the rap is not needed and makes the song worse. Still excellent.

Sprockrooster (10) serves us some trivia, c’mon Lana Del Rey: Unreleased! ‘Very reminiscent in many ways (vibe and thematically) to Marilyn Monroe (Puppy Love), which is an unreleased track. Definitely a quick highlight during the pre-release, but no loss of love due to fatigue of overplaying.’

Not all of us talking about Fleetwood.

But this is probably the first really insane cut, tbh. That's a beautiful, well-crafted song.

I should have given "You Never Knew" a 10, not sure why I went for 9.5 in the end. I thought it would be a crowd pleaser but listening to the whole album in one go (which is a bit of a chore to be honest) must have clouded people's judgement.

"Nothing's Wrong" was also done so wrong. Other major loss for me was "White Roses". I hope my precious "ILY2" goes top 30 at least.

This is all so so true! She manage to create a world so heartbreaking and vivid that it completely overwhelms you with sadness. All the images of empty benches, pouring rain, waiting for someone, they hit you deeply because they are the usual tropes of love affair gone wrong, and we all know this world well. And then the bridge comes, and she literally BREAKS this world apart when she says "Now that I'm singing with Seaaaaan" and exposes that it's fabricated, that it's being created at that very moment in the studio, but then, without giving you a second to wrap your head around it, TAKES YOU BACK TO THE CHORUS, and suddenly you're in this world again, enjoying every second even though you no longer see it as something autobiographical that you may relate to. I mean, it's what music as such does - we all presuppose a level of documentary quality in the song's lyrics, but they could never equate to the real-life experience and they will therefore always be removed from the truth to a certain degree. Which, of course, does not mean we cannot be utterly taken aback and dragged by our weaves when encountering this world. Honestly, Tomorrow Never Came is among her best material. Ever.
Agreed.

Looking back at it now, it makes me feel like what we are listening to isn't someone's reality and fantasy, but two alternate and parallel realities happening at the same time. One of them is the dreamy, lovey-dovey world and the other one being the sense of sadness, fear, and the undercurrent of worry related to nuclear destruction that invades the first one at different points. The song itself is the bridge between the worlds that weaves them together. There's a lot they could do for a music video. I can picture one scene where a camera slowly zooming in on Lana from behind the bench. Once it is just her head in the shot, she turns her head to the side and as she does there's some digital distortion/rip in the one universe that happens for a brief moment as a nod to the two narratives and the space connections Lana has alluded to previously. This honestly sounds so delusional and like a fever dream, but now I really want to see it come to life. Make it happen, @Lana Del Rey!

Her actual reaction would probably be something like...

It was going to happen soon enough but I’m still upset with You Never Knew getting the axe, a song that is literal sunshine. Y’all with your vitamin D deficiency can get rickets. Little Of Your Love can doo-wop the fuck outta here now too.

I’m also a bit sad at Groupie Love going, one of my faves on the album.

The St. Vincent thing isn't that surprising. It was all so unmemorable that I could see it receiving no torpedo scores like Lana, Haim, and Charli seem to have attracted, though I would be very surprised if a majority of her songs weren't out by the Top 30-40.
