So yes, after a relatively cute and drama-free elimination this morning...we have this. The worst part? This is only the tip of the iceberg and I will have to elimination one of my favourite songs in the entire rate straight after this. As you can see, this tragically started out just scraping the top 70 before jumping into the top 50, where it remained throughout the remainder of the voting period/ It got awfully close to cracking the top 40 due to the eleven 10s it received, but a handful of embarrassingly low scores scattered across voting prevented it from reaching the top 40 like it deserved to. That said, I’m proud of how this has performed, even if you lot put it on the same level as HAIM’s Little Of Your Love...choices, ey?
According to co-producer Rick Nowels, ‘Change’ was recorded a day before the album had to be completed and sent to Polydor. They began recording the song at 8:00 p.m. and by 2:00 a.m. the whole record was finished. With this limited time, the song could only be mainly composed of vocals and piano. I personally think it’s better for it - the sparsity of the production gives it the intimacy and warmth that it needs; it also marks a wonderful contrast with the incredible closer ‘Get Free’.
Lyrically, it is one of the most pure and beautifully-written songs Lana has ever put her name to; it radiates hope and defiance in the face of turmoil and it’s the song we NEEDED in 2017, and still need now. In an interview with Swedish magazine BON, she explained that it was written about
"feeling like you have to change on many different levels. First of all, that something has to change in the world. In the first verse, I sing 'there’s something in the wind, I can feel it blowing in', and in the second verse I sing that it’s 'on the wings of a song'. When I express my thoughts about change through lyrics and music, it can be about North Korea launching missiles or whatever, but it can also be directed inwards. So in the second verse I make it personal, when it’s about being stable, strong, and secure, and not looking for new discoveries when I don’t even have my shit together". She also stated that the four words that make up the chorus: "Honest, capable, beautiful and stable" shape the image of who she wants to become. It’s all very Britney_yeah.gif, AND apt for this time of year #NewYearNewMe.
Now onto some less important opinions and insights:
Bleedingheart80 (4), in a strong Comeback Corner tea, blames Lana for her low attention span and an inability to process songs lower than 125 BPM:
One more song left after this one. YES!
mokitsu (4) kindly describes Lisa Ramos from ANTM cycle 13.
‘Pretty, but very forgettable.'
Speaking of descriptions,
Cassava's (4) commentary reminds me of everyone in my uni's Raise and Give society:
A little bit of that college student who just became aware of a terrible thing and is writing to help them process their feelings vibe.
Joe. (6) denounces it as a mere stepping stone to the excellence of Get Free:
Cute vocals, but 'Change' for me, is the weakest on Lust For Life. Lizzie kind of just meanders through the song before snatching weaves with 'Get Free' .
Michael17 (7) is...fair, at least:
I can’t seem to will myself to sit through this one very often. Just too flat for me. The chorus is very uplifting and intimate, though. Some people think this is a “departure” for her, but I don’t see much evolution besides there being fewer instruments, to be honest. Still, a nicely-written, decent track.
Stradiwhovius (7.5) probably feels that this could’ve done with a bit more studio time:
Very much getting there, but sometimes veers into mistaking sincere for boring.
Trouble in Paradise (8), conversely, appreciates the simplicity:
I love that Lana kept this song so sparse with the focus on her voice and piano. The lyrics are so personal and powerful.
Bangers&Bops (8.5) also appreciates the stark production:
Lana Del Rey hasn’t sang over a piano barebones like this since “Old Money," a heartbreaking track from Ultraviolence. This song, doubling as both personal empowerment and a blanket statement about keeping hope alive during times of great turmoil, is by far her most powerful and heartbreaking as she attempts to be honest, capable, and beautiful in the face of instability.
Happiestgirl (9) has seen Lana live and is NOT afraid to tell us:
This would’ve received a 7 if her live version hadn’t touched me profoundly. Serving ethereal vocals.
sfmartin (9) is one of the few to ~get it~:
She just got it so right with this album. Thematically its perfect, and this expertly shifts the tone to more introspective for the perfect closer. She really bares her soul on this song which is quite moving.
Jwentz (10) had this to add:
Slice of Life (10) begs for mercy...only to be finished off with Get Free, poor it:
This is making me emotional, bish. Stop stop she's already dead. RIP in peace, hoe.
