We continue with a song by MUNA that actually deserved to make the top 40...
You say I'd best be going cause it's getting late
And I say
Why don't I walk you home cause it's on the way
But the last time
That we made love, you left in tears
So this time
You're wondering how to leave it here

After the BLIP that was End of Desire, it feels good to return to top 40 entries that are actually falling in the
correct place. As you can see, this is only the second cut so far that remained in the top 40 throughout voting after Slow Disco (talent!), once again marking the gradient of quality we are now observing as we head deeper into the top 40. This got as high as the top 25 at one point, which I'm sure we can all agree was a...reach considering the high calibre of this group of tracks. Again, #34 was about right for this, so well done everyone!
It was nice to see such an understated and overlooked deep cut from the album snatch 15 10s, because it really is quite the revelation after repeated listens. What initially feels quite stagnant and mid-tempo reveals a pulse and a bop-ability with repeated listens. True to the track's title, this is one of the 'iciest' and most winter-friendly songs on the album, hence why I've been having the odd moment to this song in recent weeks.
In an email to Fader, Katie said about the song:
This song is about a love that you can’t reconcile—wanting to make a home out of a person that has proved to you time and again that they are not a home; they are just a person…It’s about retracing scars, negative patterns, all with the silent belief that moments of communion and understanding might justify months of misfiring and regret. We’re all just trying to get back to that ‘first high’ feeling—an honest endeavor, however futile.
happiestgirl (4), unsurprisingly, reveals herself to be more of a Summer Bummer:
I really don’t like that middle 8, though the chorus is nice.
Just like the late and great Margaery Tyrell
Kuhleezi (5) was the only one to flag something for being a bit off...'
There's something a bit off about the instrumental, like it doesn't gel with the vocal line. It's actually quite distracting.'
The frostiness of this track is creating
Trouble In Paradise (6):
This is the first warning that this album may not be the pristine pop collection I thought it’d be. At the very least it’s their best mid-tempo vocal effect drenched song full of pining and regret on the album. Trouble in paradise? *guffaw*
Bleedingheart80 (7) justifies a good score with middling commentary:
This is just alright for me.
haps (7.5) only put ‘
flowing melody’ as their commentary for this song and I laughed harder than I should have.
*Picks mind out of the GUTTER*
Michael17 (7.5): Very listenable. Not the most creative or groundbreaking, but it’s pretty nice. About a minute too long.
Bangers&Bops (8) justifies his 8 better than I did oop:
This pushes back against synthpop stylings, instead creating a more dreamy and less polished sound, with a heavy use of vocal manipulations. This song might be described as “dark pop”, some peoples favorite label for any sort of pop music that they don’t want to admit is pop music. Winterbreak is pure pop in all its dreamy goodness.
sfmartin (9) had a bit of a festive ~moment~ in the run-up to the holiday season:
Urgh it's so good. Romantic, beautiful ballad with a chorus that I often whimper as it conjures all this emotion out of nowhere.
My woke sis
Kalonite (10) stans, naturally:
Lush vocodor-y vocals, no gender pronouns, melancholic cyclical heartbreak - this ticks all the boxes.
Slaybellz (10) compares alt legends to another alt legend:
Very Imogen Heap. Also I love the lyrics and story they depict. That "pull" verse is genius. @Trouble in Paradise
For
Stradiwhovius (10)
'it's not often that a song comes along and just gets the human condition like this does. It captures the minutiae that goes into a difficult love and it's cutting.'
ufint (10) has been through some stuff and this proved to me some forma therapy for him, it seems:
It hurts listening to this now, because I can relate to the lyrics so, so badly. Queens of emotion, they are. “I think we both know, this is the love that we won’t get right” hits me so hard.

Fantasy (10):
I love this one in all its desperation to recapture that first initial high of a relationship, despite knowing deep down that it’s useless. I love how mellow and melancholic the whole thing is and the production is lush. Katie’s vocals are also quite robotic but at the same time manage to sound so soft and full of emotion. I just want to drive around the city at night with my friends while I listen to this like the girls do in the video.
