After a 13-cut break from the Extras, we return to snatch Miss Valerie Teicher aka Tei Shi and leave just three remaining. Like all of the remaining Extras, this surpassed my expectations and low-key sIayed. Tei Shi is one of the lesser-known participating artists, so seeing this track almost entering the top 10 at one point was a massive surprise to me. In the first half of voting, this was actually the second-highest-rated Extra before the other two surpassed it towards the end. Even though it gradually fell to the back end of the top 30, this was pretty unanimously liked/loved, and even those who didn't really care for it gave it 5+ scores.
I first came across Tei Shi all the way back in 2015 when blogger buzz brought 'Bassically' to my attention and swiftly removed every follicle from my damn scalp. Unfortunately for me, it took another two years after her initial 'breakout' EP for the album dropped, by which my interest waned. It wasn't until
@NecessaryVoodoo and
@A&E began to batter me over the head with the video on Plug.dj that I re-discovered my love for Tei Shi.
Crawl Space (available to buy and stream NOW!) didn't do much for me at first (I blame that FUCKING little girl), but turned out to be quite the grower. This track remains my favourite (although 'Keep Running' and 'How Far' were also considered for the rate) and was an easy 10 due to how much it panders to my affinity for [*atmospheric pop music*]. The annoying little girl who does the intro and outro can CHOKE, though.
Miss Valerie came the fuck THROUGH with the content I was looking for by annotating the lyrics on Genius herself! So I'll let the good sis herself give you the tea:
How did the song come together?
The song started from a basic instrumental idea my friend and collaborator had made. It had the pad synth that carries through the song, and a minimal drum beat. I really loved the feel of the beat, and sat down with it and wrote the song over that. It was one of the fastest I’ve ever written a song. From there, I recorded the vocals and we tweaked the beat a little bit around it. I later took it to the producer John Hill, and he helped build that initial beat into a full-fledged pop production, but the core of the track and the song and vocals stayed the same.
What is the inspiration behind this track?
The inspiration came from feeling like I was in a relationship that was one-sided. Where I was giving myself to someone and trying to be accepted and loved as I was, but I was misunderstood. That feeling also permeated into my feelings towards myself, and other relationships in which I felt like only parts of myself were acknowledged or embraced, when I wanted to be fully understood.
What was the process of making the song like?
The process was really fun. When I wrote the song, it surprised me how easily it came out, and it felt like one of the catchiest things I’d written. At first, I was put off by it as it seemed too poppy for the rest of the album at the time, but after a while that started to really excite me. It went through a few different iterations production-wise, but the songwriting stayed the same from day one. It was more about finding the right form for the song to take, and giving the catchy nature of it the opportunity to shine and hit the way it should.
Now onto the commentary:
I can’t help but feel that
Trouble in Paradise (5.5) underscored this based on what he actually wrote for this:
I like Tei Shi’s voice here more than I have before but the chorus gets repetitive. Another Spotify-playlist sounding song but one I’d actually use.
Turns out
GimmeWork (6) is the only person on earth who actually enjoys the dumb intro and outro:
The video is trying hard to elevate the song but that’s not what I’m rating right?! So this is just kinda generic and doesn’t even feel that alt pop. Although the intro where she says she wants to be like Britney moved this from a 5 to a 6, so well done Tei Shi.
Haps calls it
‘radio-friendly’...and then proceeds to give it just a 6.5. I mean, it won’t get any radio play either way so who cares at this point...
Always the wordsmith,
Bleedingheart80 (7) had this to add:
Nice enough. I like her voice.
Stradiwhovius (7) comes for Valerie's originality:
Much of this feels like elements other artists have done better, but it all comes together to create something perfectly enjoyable.
Michael17 (7.5) did ha research:
I loved her song “Nevermind the End”, and this is nice, too. This doesn’t quite grab me, though. Feels like an album track on a really good R&B album. Great voice.
Bangers&Bops (8) must of been wearing briefs when writing his commentary for this:
Exudes a light 80’s pop air which is just fine for this bop.
sfmartin (8) made a discovery:
Hadn't heard this before the rate, it's terrific. It’s like a more upbeat Shura. Her voice has the breathy texture of Britney which appeals to me a lot it's grown on me tremendously the more I listen to it. The chorus is infectious, gets a tad repetitive towards the end.
A tip for
mokitsu (9.5) now, don’t tell me what to do! ‘
This track is so flawless. The soft pre-chorus, the anthemic chorus. Her album is great too! (and low-key should've been on the rate).’ Okay but can we talk about you calling this ‘flawless’ and yet not giving it a 10, make up your damn mind!
Someone who DID give Miss Tei Shi the 10 she deserved is
happiestgirl:
'This is such a fun little bop.' Sure is!
Kuhleezi (10) channels his inner Charli_singing_out_of_window.gif:
"You! Don't! Know! Me! Like! You! Say! You! Do!" This is how you do anthemic choruses! Let ‘em know!
ufint (10) thinks this is the time and place to shade...Dame Kerry Katona:
White girl got some pipes! (C: she isn’t white)
This is like a perfect mix between Tinashe and SZA and that spoken part is better than Atomic Kitten.
Slice of Life’s (10) lace front wasn’t glued down properly, I see: '
BISH WHY YOU GOTTA MAKE THE EXTRAS SECTION THIS LIT??? GET TF OUT. THIS IS GORGE.' NecessaryVoodoo and I warned you, bitch!
