Cyndi Lauper

Wow, I can't believe it's been almost 10 years since the 30th Anniversary edition. It feels like yesterday when I purchased that. I didn't mind it but, yeah, we need another edition with the proper mixes and would love a tour CD.

And I can't believe it will be 40 (!) years since the original came out.

The vocal processing and mix on this new song is ABYSMAL. I knew I wouldn't like the song because Diane Warren but they could at least made it listenable.

How did these ladies green light this?

Yes! I'm here for yet another She's So Unusual Edition. Maybe this time they care enough to use the 7'', 12'' mixes, edits, a full length Fun Tour concert and not new remixes that nobody in her fanbase cares about.

If there is a 40th anniversary edition it needs to contain all the missing gems left off the previous anniversary release. That release focused too heavily on the artwork and not content.

I would love this too, also a proper release of the Shine album in full.

Shine needs to be released on vinyl even if it is just for the stunning cover. I have the promo album flat and it is gorgeous in 12" form.

It saddens me how overlooked Cyndi is and how her body of work never really gets the justice it deserves. It was great to see Merry Christmas...have a nice life receive the coloured vinyl treatment and Real Gone Music were fantastic with releasing the 3 versions but my collection needs more of ANTR, HFOS, SOA and Shine reissues. There is copious amounts of material for deluxe editions and as we now live in a world of coloured vinyl the options are endless. Picture discs of the above would also be a dream come true.

Hat Full of Stars / Sisters of Avalon / Shine are all bulletproof and deserved so much more recognition in my opinion. Imagine having this trilogy.

She's so underrated (No pun intended) even with pop fans who loves a flop diva. At least Bring Ya to the Brink was somewhat praised by the gays™.

God... I miss new material from Cyndi. My hopes for a new original album is close to none unfortunately, even another cover album, and I like all three of them, seems unlikely.

I was hoping with the Australian tour that some new material might surface but I am losing all hope that Cyndi will release anything new.

Cyndi has a huge vault of unreleased songs (hopefully one day they might see the light) and I am sure there are more songs from SOA sessions. Mincing Words would be a nice addition.
Is there a list of unreleased songs? I always thought she just recorded enough songs for each album.

At the time, Shine was finally the emphatic pop rock album she ought to have released instead of 1989's middling offering. I don't think the production stands up well overall, but the track Shine was a career jubilee moment and there is no doubt this is one incredible set of songs.

I don't know of a full list, but there are some off the top of my head I know of:
  1. "A Part Hate" (1986 version) - recorded for True Colors
  2. Patti LaBelle duet - recorded for True Colors, not sure if this ever got recorded before plans fell through
  3. "Don't Look Back" - recorded for A Night to Remember
  4. "Edge of the Earth" - recorded for Shine, there is a remix by Eddie X out there that was either on a promo or leaked
She also recorded some songs with Blue Angel for a second album that never happened, but some tracks leaked on the internet. There's a YouTube channel that seems to have a few of them: (https://www.youtube.com/@cyndifans7572/videos)

Plus there was also a cassette promo that had alternate early versions of some songs from Shine (https://www.discogs.com/release/7504160-Cyndi-Lauper-Shine). I believe all of these leaked on the internet, but I can only find a couple on YouTube.

Oh wow, I had no idea about A Part Hate. I just adore it.

In her memoir, Cyndi said that she originally wrote the song in reaction to apartheid in South Africa, however the record label executives thought it was too "political". The True Colors album already had "What's Going On" by that time, so some people were getting cold feet about including another "political" track. Cyndi decided to include the song on Hat Full of Stars due to the Rodney King riots in 1992.

David Thornton has a co-writing credit on the track, which suggests that changes were made to it when it got included on Hat Full of Stars. I'd be curious to hear what the original True Colors version sounded like.

I wonder if Cyndi/record label never really looked after/saved all the unreleased stuff she recorded and that’s why nothing has ever been released/leaked as it’s all long gone?

What happened to her for the later part of her career, with not releasing much new original music besides cover albums.
Did the record labels not support original music or did she just not have any interest anymore?

I remember she did an interview for the She's So Unusual: 30th Anniversary Celebration (it was on the DVD that came with the Japanese edition), in which she mentioned still having boxes with tapes containing outtakes from each of her albums. She said something like "I've got a box for She's So Unusual, a box for True Colors, a box for Hat Full of Stars, and so on...". I remember finding it funny she left out A Night to Remember in that sentence, but maybe the box is called Kindred Spirit (the original album title) instead?

In any case, there definitely seems to be some unreleased stuff that Cyndi herself kept. Not sure if her label was quite so careful, but I did hear a rumour that Cyndi tried to find a recording of her first tour, but the copy that she found was in bad condition and couldn't be restored. It's sad to think that vital recordings (both video and audio) could be lost through lack of care.

I'm losing all hope as well and it saddens me that we don't get to hear her voice and words anymore. In an interview with People last year, she said that she was thinking about doing one more big tour for the 40th anniversary of She's so Unusual. I hope she didn't mean that it would be a full-on SSU tour again.
