702 AND Blaque in quick succession? Good grief. Glad to see there are at least a few people who saved them from a bottom-of-the-pile #R&Bjustice cull. Why can't you all be like @CorgiCorgiCorgi and stan a bit harder for the '90s R&B girls?

After keeping my 10 losses to a minimum so far, losing my 11 so early HURTS. That 702 song is legendary and y'all did it so wrong. (Although @Sprockrooster's taste in 1999/2000 R&B is clearly flawless.)

Today we are eliminating songs that have been a pleasant surprise for fans. I think they've been thrilled to see them get this far.

This first song to get more than one 11.

#38. Dolly Style - Cherry Gum - 6.917

Cherry-Gum-Dolly-Style-2015-1200x1200.png

Highest: 11 x 2 (@iheartpoptarts, @Posh Spears) 10 x 3 (@WhenTheSunGoesDown, @Animalia, @Elysium)

Lowest: 1 (@slaybellz) 2 (@JapaneseJesus) 3 (@2014)

This is the most recent act to be 100% 'bubblegum dance' as far as what the subgenre is truly all about. They claim to be from a "dollhouse in Dollyville" and are inspired by 60s fashion and Victorian style. The group always has a Molly, a Holly, and a Polly. They've had two Mollys and three Pollys. Their song "Hello Hi" almost made it to the final of the 2015 Melodifestivalen for Sweden. The same thing happened in 2016 with the song "Rollercoaster".

...Ouch. Well, possibly, maybe, we'll see. If it turns out you gave it less than a 9, then I'm not so sure you deserve 'Cherry Gum'! Can I have it?

(9) - I know that anything less than a 10 is going to feel like an attack, but as you said yourself...as long as it's not below a 9. I don't even remember how I discovered this group, but it was actually before I saw everyone raving about them them on bubblegumdancer.com. I immediately entered them in PJSC and grabbed a Top 10. I knew it was one of @iheartpoptarts's favorite entries from me, but little did I know it would get an 11 in this rate full of basic bops. It's more of a comparative thing for me, because I have too many other songs with more of an impact on me getting 10s and this is just a slight tic below that. In another kind of rate this could definitely get a 10. If this is what bubblegum dance in the modern day sounds like, I'm thrilled. They definitely take their cues from the Swedish groups before them like Smile.DK and it literally creates an anthem out of the very name of the genre itself. If you heard this, loved it, have never experienced this kind of music before, and are interested in expanding that love...just PM anyone from the PJ bubblegum club (@iheartpoptarts, @WhenTheSunGoesDown, or me) and we'll happily give you direction. Speaking for myself, I have hundreds of bubblegum acts you've probably never heard of sitting in my library waiting for discovery.

I know Nadine, but this is what makes it 'bubblegum dance'. It has to have a childish 'barbie girl' aspect to the music/style.

(6) - Interesting. "pop my cherry (gum)" is questionable for a group styled like 12 year olds.

Rd7LLKD.png

Lofty comparisons from Mutya.

(6) - You're just begging to disappoint with a name like that. Is it as good as "Chewing Gum" by Annie? Is it as good as "Cherry Lips" by Garbage? No. Nothing is. Sorry

Actually there are a few other Annie songs that win, but not Chewing Gum.

Uh84Bdc.png

Frankie is not here for bubblegum dance.

(7) - I really hate these bands that have some kind of schtick like this… Sweet and sugary and everything about them is so over the top. Those wigs… Sis. Having said that the song doesn’t irk me in any kind of way, but it ain’t nothing special either.

thSrEb0.png

Mollie, no no no no, it does nothing but explode!

(7) - I don’t like the looks but the verses are good, it’s a shame the chorus doesn’t quite explode into pop glory like it should but it’s a decent song.

i05I7ow.png

Siobhan remembers being scalped in that PJSC.

(8) - so catchy!

Oavaix3.png

Heidi just might be intrigued, or appalled, I'm not really sure.

(8) - What kind of Euro-kawaii-trash is this?

bhcn77T.png

Kelly is finding out how bubblegum dance has a kinkiness buried beneath the childish exterior. Again, just think of "Barbie Girl" and you'll know what the genre is all about.

(8) - This is great, subtly sexual and dark beneath the candy-sweet, made for children veneer.

nYt8Mgg.png

If I remember correct, they are older than you think Michelle. Don't let the costumes fool you.

(8.5) - The LazyTown realness in the video, combined with the utter filth of the lyrics… I feel wrong watching the video, are these girls ever older than 16/18? Is it bad that I bopped quite hard to this though?

Mandatory LazyTown moment or @iheartpoptarts will never let me hear the end of it!

eGYKjLS.png

Diana is living with regret.

(9) - I should have given it much more points at the PJ contest, cause it much more long lasting impact than any of the other songs I voted for.

yxHFGCR.png

Mel points out how they've just as many lineup changes as your fav.

(10) - Dolly Style is BEYOND tragic but they bring the basic bops! I wish they’d made Rollercoaster a single so I could give that a 10 too.

LMZSagk.png

Never in a million years did I think Ally would be all about this, but it makes me ready to enter future bubblegum finds in a PJSC. But then again, I should've seen this coming:

Rate%20Intro%204_zpslastg0j6.jpg

(10) - I've been addicted to this ever since hearing it in the PJSC. It's so obnoxiously, sickly sweet it's almost gross (and the video is definitely hugely questionable) but I just can't help myself.

ZpwLyMe.png

Posh, just know that Baby Spice is going to heart you forever for this.

(11) - What kind of sugary Nintendo-esque bubblegum goodness. I honestly have to give the highest score possible just for “you will hear me when I cum, when I pop my cherry gum.” Wow. Kyary Pamyu Pamyu and Cupcakke their impacts. I feel like I don’t want to listen to the rest of the songs in this rate because this is the one.

Z9GCZhl.png

This isn't the first time Baby Spice has tried her hardest to make me blush.

(11) - This is why I heart you… don’t tell me you didn’t see it coming! It’s everything I love that the pop world doesn’t deliver nearly enough of anymore, and I’m still holding out hope that we’ll get a full-fledged bubblegum dance revival one of these days. Besides. This way it almost feels like I’m giving you my 11, too.

Awww, thank so much. The biggest reason I enter PJSC is broaden people's taste with a fun, less-serious, and often times upbeat side of pop. I'm also trying to find new discoveries for the people who I know already love it, like you. Mission accomplished.

Poor poptarts has been getting onslaughted lately losing countless 10s in a row and her 11. It's time for a little revenge don't you think so?

Not just hers though, because we're at #37 and still dishing out multiple 0s.

#37. Paradiso Girls - Patron Tequila - 6.983

ashtis1SSFq.png

Highest: 10 x 6 (@GhettoPrincess, @Filler, @Elysium, @JapaneseJesus, @phily693, @Conan)

Lowest: 0 x 2 (@Shockbox, @Animalia) 3 x 2 (@Reboot, @2014)

Song Charted: #82 Canada // #3 (U.S. Hot Dance Club Songs)

It was intended to be the lead single for the unreleased album Crazy Horse and even had multiple remixes released to help promote it. Lil Jon and Eve of course feature on the tracks which was written by Keri Hilson. Keri was supposed to have Patron Tequila on her album titled In A Perfect World, but it was given to the Paradiso Girls at the last second. (No word on whether Ciara had a hand in that or not) Lil Jon's verse was omitted and T-Pain was replaced by Eve. There was a poll created that summer called "Who Did It Better?" asking listeners to compare the Paradiso Girls version vs. the Keri Hilson version.

(9) - Okay, so I didn't really follow the song during its release because I only really knew it from hearing about it on this forum. It was only during this rate that the craziness of it eventually grew on me, as you can tell from the score. I've never minded Lil Jon's hype-man features; he kind of falls into the same category as Ludacris for me. I actually think he elevates the atmosphere of it all in a way. To be honest the girls are very anonymous sounding on a song like this, which is fine because I've never been known to care about that very much. The production somehow manages to turn it into a bit of a club anthem though , which is what hooked me and dragged me away. Bop of our generation.

0KZSIZ9.png

Normani could smell Robin Antin from a mile away.

(0) - These songs are all sounding the same. Were they all put together by the PCD manager lady?

LMZSagk.png

It's tough to figure Ally out. She goes from living for Dolly Style to hating this.

(0) - Terrible production, embarrassing lyrics, obnoxious shouting throughout. No ma'am.

sUntJtv.png

Nicola repeats what some people have said about "Lucky Day" (not me of course, I'll die with that song considered a pop treasure)

(3) - What a mess.

KPHueHK.png

Keisha is always willing to celebrate someone coming in during the latter part of a song.

(4) - Eve is the best thing about this song.

Oavaix3.png

Sounds like Heidi would rather hear "3, 6, 9, damn she's fine"

(4) - one tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor....I dislike Lil Jon

bhcn77T.png

Lil Jon will take it as a victory that you're even contemplating his name these days.

(5) - Can’t decide if Lil Jon makes or destroys this.

Z9GCZhl.png

I actually went to my local Best Buy after reading this to make sure they hadn't started selling alcohol. I left disappointed, because that would've been ICONIC.

(5) - Confession time: I was waiting for the Skip Ad button because I thought this was a Best Buy commercial.

yxHFGCR.png

This is when Mel was told go sit in a judge's chair and stop making actual commercial decisions.

(5.5) - “Get Lil Jon on this! Get Eve in here! We will make this a HIT!” But alas.

ZpwLyMe.png

If a song gets Victoria standing on the bar, fighting the beat for her life, it gets a 7. That's just what she does. If she wants to save 15% or more on her car insurance, she uses Geico, that's just what she does.

(7) - I’m high key here for the disastrous mess that this is.

EeTO3OB.png

Oh honey, you could've rated whatever version you wanted to. I did mention this, right?

(7.5) - The "This/Is Remix" of this is the superior version of this song, a hard 10 while the original is a soft 7.5

i05I7ow.png

Siobhan rightfully points out Lauren's love for the art of making music.

(8) - Damn, poor Lauren! She's been hustling for like a decade.

eGYKjLS.png

Meanwhile poor Diana needs to work on her G.R.L. herstory and fast. (I honestly can't script this shit)

(9) - A new song for me and I am screaming at that Carrie Underwood look a like in the video. I first thought it was here, but then I would be really shook. Both Lil Jon and Eve bring this song to a higher level.

nYt8Mgg.png

Michelle and Keisha had some words about what the best part of the song was and what part needed be left on the cutting room Audacity room floor.

(10) - I used to KRUMP the SHIT out of this banging beat. The Eve rap has always felt unnecessary.

thSrEb0.png

Mollie apparently doesn't find the girls that anonymous sounding at all.

(10) - I absolutely detested Chelsea Korka from that Pussycat Dolls show and always loved Melissa Molinaro but then this group came along…. I forgot all about that reality show and was loving Chelsea & Lauren’s vocals here. The other lead vocalist was so annoying though and then there were two useless members. Great bop though.

Obilgatory Melissa Molinaro moment:

Rd7LLKD.png

And Mutya probably still wonders why I stan the living hell out of Avril.

(10) - Haha fucking hell I forgot how much I loved this. It's Lil Jon in girl group form, and with a much better beat than any other Lil Jon song. Utterly, unashamedly lacking in demurity. Peeling back all veneers of pop respectability, not just going out and having a tipple and a nice time, literally just straight up bellowing about throwing the fuck up. Incredible. I mean this is practically punk. Genuinely everything I want from an American flop girl group.

Patron Tequila did well considering their other song was out first and all. Also yes at @DJHazey posting that bop called Dance Floor!

She/Her
I can't really blame anyone for giving Patron Tequila a low score, but it's always been hilarious to me, so I'm glad it made it this far. It's so ridiculously catchy, I know I'm going to be singing to myself about throwing up margaritas all day.
