Oh but we aren't done with the UK, are we? Now a group is losing their first song. So that means the mighty Mini Viva, Mis-Teeq, or Girls Can't Catch.
Arguments could be made for any of them, but it's going to be a song that I knew was well-loved going in. I've never been a big fan of it and now I regret not just tanking it altogether. Talk about an overscore...
#29. (tie) - Girls Can't Catch - Echo - 7.117
Highest: 10 x 3 (
@Reboot,
@unnameable,
@Conan) <--- At least I thought it was well-loved.
Lowest: 2.5 (
@Animalia) 3.5 (
@ohdenny)
It's frustrating to watch these "meh" tracks beat out some of the stuff in the #30-#40 part of the countdown, but again besides these two scores we had a few 5s and nothing else low.
Song Charted: #19 UK
The band really is an oddity. My feeling towards this song aside, they really did release two amazing singles as far as what the public thought about them. After releasing "Echo", they toured with the Jonas Brothers and then suddenly were just dropped. If anyone has anymore details about why, I'd love you to share. Apparently their unreleased album was leaked at the time, so if anyone wants to give me a hand with that I'd be appreciative. Interesting fact about the music video is that they lets fans choose an idea and the winner would meet the group on set and get a makeover. I don't know how the winner got that lucky, because the video is honestly very generic.
(6) - I get
why I should love a song like this, but I've tried numerous times and it's just not happening. You can keep repeating Echo fifty thousand times and it's never going to sound any less dead to my ears. I also can't get past how it low-key sounds like an "Eggo" waffles commercial. I honestly don't have any explanation for my score, I must have had some small moment with it and/or felt like being nice. As a host I never want to be a low-scorer for any song unless it calls for it. "Echo" just isn't that unpleasant of a sound overall and I always score songs based on their independent merits as a pop song and not against the others in the rate. It's just how my mind works. I thought this would end up being one of my lowest scores, but I surprised myself by not having that occur. I'm very pleased that "Keep Your Head Up" won because I didn't think that was going to happen.
I honestly felt like I would give this the "Darla Score" (a 4).
@GhettoPrincess is going to kill me for this nickname.
Ally is just braver than I.
(2.5) - This is… bad.
Kelly might have some words of wisdom on why I wasn't harsh as I expected to be.
(5) - I always really liked their personalities, but this is a dreadfully-written song. They did their best with it.
That's right Mutya, they would reject Top 20 hits. Thanks for your #truth on the matter.
(5) - Practically custom-made to demonstrate the pointlessness of Girls Can't Catch as a pop prospect. It's like it was written specifically to be rejected by The Saturdays.
Going further, Mel correctly places it in their discography for fun.
(6) - A Saturdays album track I would skip.
Posh reckons that all the echoes eventually ran out of steam.
(6) - It’s very anthemic which is awesome, but it feels very... of the time it came out.
No Emma, in fact you should've gone lower to make up for my bad choices.
(6) - Maybe a bit more midtempo than it needs to be… or am I just spoiled for bops here? Hehe, you tell me!
I knew Mollie would be able to hook me up. I'll watch for that PM.
(7) - This was never a big favourite of mine despite it being popular on the forum at the time. Daisy’s vocals are brilliant though. It’s a bit too repetitive. Tracks you should check out from their unreleased album - Alone, Another Day, L.E.S. Artistes and Mind It.
Time killed another one.
(7) - I used to really love this. I’m not as enamoured as I once was sadly. Phoebe’s bits really annoy me, it could just be her voice.
Frankie couldn't be anymore correct.
(7) - The verses aren’t catchy at all and not exactly nicely sung and the chorus was underwhelming at first… Having said that the pre-chorus is the best thing about this song and the actual chorus eventually grew on me. After actually being invested in their first single, the rest just kinda passed my by…
Siobhan is a bit more...calculated about what massive chorus means to her.
(7.5) - That chorus!
This story is first of all ICONIC and also not at all surprising.
(8) - I once had an argument with Daisy on Twitter when she changed her name to Daisy Dance. I told her it was a stupid name and it didn't work for Rosie Ribbons. She wasn't very happy.
Keisha really thinks they got the short end of the stick.
(8.5) - This really deserved to be a hit. Not as slick as *some* three-piece girl groups, but Echo was definitely deserving of a lot more than it got.
Apparently "too much" is somehow a minor thing for Diana.
(9) - I completely forgot about this, so I am having a nostalgic rediscovery here. That chorus is a bit too repetitive.
Nadine was so ready to stan for her life when the rug got pulled out from under her.
(9) - This would have been my immediate 11 years ago. I was obsessed. I remember there being a hot minute when it seemed like this would actually be a hit and then.... nothing. I'm still bitter about it I think! I now prefer Keep Your Head Up and desperately wish we got the album. Mind It would be a surefire 10.
Honestly, Heidi it's past midnight so I'm going to look this name up.
(10) - Love this song, whatever happened to sinister pop Svengali Nathan Jay?
Okay, so I can't completely hate a song that had this kind of impact on Nicola. Thanks for sharing!
(10) - God, this song takes me back. I used to be properly obsessed with these girls for a while, and then I saw a low-quality video of a performance of Echo and it was all I could think of for, like, the next few weeks. The studio version didn’t disappoint either; it’s final chorus that makes it for me. On a more personal level, the song reminds me of a crush who, like the guy in the song, went out of their way to make me feel a bit shit. This song really played a big part in me getting over them and getting my life back on track.
