There's one style of dance-pop in this rate that truly is my favorite.
We've eliminated Stockholm Slayage, Slaybro, and Slayon Jungle, so I guess we had to finish off all the
hard bangers, didn't we?

Now despite some...choice scores this song was always in the mix for rate-winner, in fact the next lowest score was a single 6.5! I think the highest it ever got was #3, but it never went lower than this.
Song Charted: Everywhere // #1 UK // #7 USA // #1 Scotland // #28 USA Year-End (2013) // #19 UK Year-End (2013) // #93 Sweden All-Time Chart // #400 Australia All-Time Chart // #35 Rolling Stones 2012 Top 50 // #50 Pitchfork 2012 Top 100

Easily the most commercially successful song in our entire rate, I Love It was written by Charli XCX and Scandinavian songwriting legend Patrik Berger. Berger brought Charli two beats which she made into two songs, one being this and the other her next single at the time "You're The One". Aino immediately connected with the "you're from the 70s but I'm a 90s bitch" line because it reminded of an older ex. The brought it to producers Style of Eye to make the song a bit rougher, calling Charli's a bit too 'cutesy', saying they wanted a that real "fuck it" feeling.
A January 2013 episode of the TV show 'Girls' really sparked the downloading frenzy for it and that's when it entered the Billboard Charts. In June 2013, a few cover versions of the songs charted from artists like Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams. Pitchfork labeled it "Best New Music' and called it "delectable, empowering, infinitely repeatable". Rolling Stones had some questionable words behind their stanning, deeming it "the Euro-slut club jam of the summer". The music video was shot in one day with friends while in Paris.
Literally name a TV show or advertisement from this era and it could be heard, yet somehow it remains just as fresh, to my ears at least.
(10) - Too basic. Too shouty. Too repetitive. Played too much. I've heard it all and yet it's all gone in one ear and out the other. The line "you're from the 70s but I'm a 90s bitch" literally presents the argument against the haters, telling them stop resisting their youthful side. If you die from the audio onslaught, then all you have to do is hit replay and the kick drums will re-start your poor heart in no time. Played at the club? Forget it. This one always has everyone ready to really do some damage that night. Fuck. My favorite line for some reason has always been "I threw your shit into a bag and pushed it down the stairs". You don't love this? Get the fuck out!
So...this gets you a 2 these days? Someone hold my earrings, I'm going in.
(2) - Lots of unnecessary shouting. Plus I particularly hate the way the video misspells '90s as 90ies. What on earth are the 90ies?!
I let Mutya have the floor to explain the single-release messiness.
(7) - Solid mid-tier Girls Aloud B-side banger, but the shine was taken off a bit by its UK release being held back for literally over a year to arbitrarily inflate its chart position to an undeserved #1, back in the dying pre-streaming-in-the-chart days of that being an acceptable release practice.
Diana probably did that thing I always warn not to do: played it 40 times a day, everyday until they killed. Almost like they wanted to kill it.
(7) - This was massive in my personal plays when it came out. And then it was everywhere, overkilling it massively.
Mollie was very...calculated about her score.
(7) - This song is something I absolutely adore or hate depending on my mood. It’s so overplayed that maybe my score is lower than it normally would be but still it’s a great song to hear on a night out.
Well so far you're way off, Mel, but time will only tell how far off you really were.
(9) - Either this or Ugly Heart is going to win the rate, isn’t it?
(10) - Perfect pop.
If this made
that playlist, I want to see what the rest of it has.
(10) - Okay but how am I STILL not bored of this? I suspect witchcraft.
Careful or you'll expose the fact that if you play it backwards you'll heard demonic hypnotize chants.
(10) - worthy of its instant classic status, this song made me an instant XCX fan.
You're not alone, as I had no idea who she was either, yet I still didn't get into her music until years later. Oop.
(10) - Everything has gone a bit downhill for them, but at least we’ll always have this incredible song. ‘You’re from the 70s but I’m a 90s bitch’ is such a great line.
Umm, but this bop I've playing the hell out of lately says otherwise.
I appreciate Frankie for teaching people not to over-evaluate a pop banger.
(10) - This is fucking glorious, isn’t it. I know it’s just three girls shouting a song into a microphone somewhere, but it just sounded so fresh and brash and it immediately grabbed my attention after hearing it for the first time on the radio.
(10) - But I’m a 90s bitch! I think this is one of those songs that everyone loves, and I sincerely hope so.
Was #6 high enough?
Even if I changed the 0 and 2 into 7's, then it only goes up to #4.
Sounds like Nadine is overscoring it, but I don't care, I love it!
(10) - Overplayed to death, and felt old as hell by the time it took off in the US, but it really does go hard. Charli is everything, its a shame Icona Pop lost their way.
The target of Posh's affections made this happen, so she's stanning.
(10) - Besides being a huge bop, this song is really special to me as a Charli stan. She was the first artist I ever saw live and her singing this at the show was such a moment, even if it’s not her song (even though it is, really). She’s always said that the song didn’t suit her at the time and Icona Pop really brought it to a different place and I believe that 100%. The whole song is awesome and the “90s bitch” line is iconic. It’s just an explosive jam from start to finish really. Also, not caring about things is my #aesthetic, so yas.
Michelle was ahead of the crowd with this, while she watched it become true definition of GLOBAL.
(10) - The first time I heard this I knew it was going to be huge, or at least should be huge. The thumping beat, the aggressive purring throughout. It’s such a ballsy song in all its simplicity. The chorus is absolutely massive. This was everywhere when I was on my Erasmus year abroad in France, Spain and Italy, and I loved that people actually translated the “I don’t care, I love it” refrain into their language and actually used it! Obviously they used the English too but I was baffled to hear that people would sing or say casually “Me da igual, me encanta” instead, and I was even more bewildered by how it actually fits the song. I’m such a language nerd… No judgement please.
