I had Celeste in my MySpace top friends. I was so proud.
It was a good few weeks back, around Xmas time maybe? I can't remember what the other clues were but the answer was simply surnames of musical duos.
EDIT: It was New Year's Day but I still can't find a screenshot of the clues.
New single "Alarms" has appeared on Spotify, it's quite nice. Very excited for the album.
There's a 7" single available too.
Alarms is a bit... Forgettable, no? Hmmm.
Alarms is great, but I find their vocals more grating than usual on it.
Is the whole album gonna be as hipstery and subdued as these songs? They're older now so there's gonna be some evolution there of course but people liked them cos they were cheeky and brash and in your face and this is not that. It's more cereal cafe than cheerleading camp. I could practically feel a wispy beard growing on my face as I watched the video for Alarms. I imagine exposure to the entire album would have me reaching for the almond milk and donning some tweed. It's very sweet and they look well happy but ladies we're gonna need you to shove a drupe up someone's back passage pretty sharpish.
Okay I'm a hipster now.
I like the songs but I get what you mean. It's a lot like the "wonky pop" craze of the 2000s. I would like to hear something more along the lines of Charli XCX from them at some point but the lo-fi charm of these tracks is cute and like you say they do look happy so this is obviously the sort of thing they want to put out.
I'm still massively looking forward to the gig, but I'm not keen on the vocodery autotune business. If you're going to heavily process their vocals, why not just go chipmunk?
I'd love to hear a chipmunkified retro remix of one of their songs that makes it sound like something off their debut album.
Had to cancel my plans to attend the concert tonight because life sucks sometimes. They are quite kindly sending me my free T-shirt.
Have a wonderful time whoever goes tonight and hopefully there will be more gigs soon.
I wish they were doing a gig near me.
I'm hoping they come up north.
Was anyone at the gig last night?
I wanna know setlists!
I don't have the memory for setlists, but I'll give it a go:
They opened with You & I Alone. Did Ooh Stick You relatively early on, but it wasn't the original backing track and the new music felt a bit odd for that one. It was a pretty short set, including the other new songs we know and maybe two or three others. They threw out bags full of inflatables. Some of the new songs were pretty bopsome.
There's a track that begins "Daphne... Whatever happened to Yaz?" with Daphne's first verse asking the same about Taylor Dayne. There was one Tundra song with D&C on backing vocals, and in the massive dance break Daphne made balloon animals and a balloon crown for Max. Two-song encore was a new song about saving the world that was pretty great, closing with UGLY with a like-the-original beginning, and then a Prince remix section introduced by confetti cannons.
No Schools Out. Support was a rock band and aside from CHVRCHES the music before bands was all rock stuff too, which felt a bit wrong – I was hoping for it to be entirely a celebration of them destroying rock music 18 years ago. The audience was pretty male heavy and didn't feel like a pop crowd.
But there was still dancing, and it still made me grin lots. The girls' vocals often seemed to be stretching their range without pitchshift or autotune, but not charmlessly so, and all three of them looked like they were having a great time. Long live Daphne & Celeste!
