Enough already

Ugh, streaming has been even worse for Disney's complete lack of innovation and creativity, they need so much new content they are reduced to remaking any old shit, including Cheaper by the Dozen. Like, have a new idea. How about that challenge?

I am fed up with the live action remakes and agree with the sentiment that Disney should stop but at the same time I can’t help but think, have Disney ever been known for great live action movies?

I can only think of Hocus Pocus and Enchanted as films I would say I love, I really can’t think of any others… I guess for a time I would have said some of the Pirates of the Carribean but that’s really it.

My point is we’re not really missing anything by Disney focusing the more creative ideas in animation format and bigger picture Disney is essentially creating live action movies which are better (in some cases) through Marvel, Star Wars and (maybe) Avatar.

There isn’t an endless pot of money to invest in making live action movies or enough time in the year to release them without putting them into direct competition with something else under the Disney umbrella. These movies are a quick cash grab aimed at bringing in new kids to these existing properties, they’re not for me.

Holes
The Parent Trap
Tron: Legacy
Pirates Of The Caribbean
High School Musical
The Princess Diaries
Sky High
Lion The Witch And The Wardrobe

I enjoyed all of these in their day! Sad that todays kids only really get to pick between live action remakes.

Halle looks great as Ariel, but it looks so fucking dark and muddy. When you think of the underwater shots in Finding Nemo which I think is in one of the most beautiful films ever it just doesn’t compare. I get they’re different vibes and mediums but yeah it just looks quite grim.

I'm revisiting this so maybe their plan is working

I literally cry every time. Howard Ashman, you were a genius.

It’s truly fascinating that the executives at the time at Disney wanted to cut this song from the film… Howard Ashman truly made magic. The documentary about him on Disney+ wrecked me when I watched it at the beginning of the pandemic. I was a sobbing mess by the end of it.

Not to completely derail the thread but I don't think it's a coincidence the movies post The Lion King didn't have the same shine as The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin etc. He was the heart and soul of those movies. Another bright light taken away from us way too soon.

Eek... Hocus Pocus 2 looks awful, it seems to be the perfect example of "If you don't have a fresh idea for a sequel, don't make a sequel". It just looks like the same exact movie but 2022. Same jokes, same situations, same plot. Just slap a bit of this decade on it and that's it.

But will I be stanning it because Bette, Sarah and Kathy are going to be eating the scenery in every scene and giving the second campiest performances of their lives? Yes.

Not going to lie I cackled when Winnefred said spread out and Sarah started stretching across the floor!

I'll wait until I've seen more, before I consider watching 'The Little Mermaid'. I agree with that tweet @scottdisick94 posted. It is easy to get tricked into being excited for these remakes, when it's based on such beloved movies with iconic songs.

Disney will only change its strategy when the awful remakes and their awful sequels flop (and, by now, there are more awful/mediocre ones then good ones). So, I let them pass and I don't even give it a hate watch. I'd rather give money to something new, like 'Elemental', 'Elio' or 'Wish' if they're any good.

I miss Studio Ghibli.

I have been quoted as calling the 'live action remakes' (read: muddy cgi remakes) artless in the past, which is not a word I use lightly (or even fairly, to be honest)...

But I will be stanning The Little Mermaid 2023. The Little Mermaid was my obsession as a child. We never had the video (remember the days Disney would release a film on VHS then CEASE PRODUCTION so they were like...scarce? My mum had to rent it all the time until it was rereleased in 1998 or so). I queued for ages to meet Ariel the first time I went to Disney World. So...baby queer me is shaking. The first notes in that teaser gave me tingles. Halle sounds lovely, and I think it's right that it's not a note for note recreation of Jodi's performance. There will no doubt be other original music and some reinterpretations that fit Halle's range.

It'll probably be as crap as EVERY other remake (except Cinderella!) but I want to be excited for it.
