Disney

Moana 2 was fantastic. I’m probably biased because she’s tied with Mulan and Tiana as my favorite Disney princesses and I’ve watched the first one about 200 times.

It’s gonna make so much money; those good but mid reviews are not going to affect box office at all. All 15 showings my theatre had last night were sold out and packed to the brim. My theatre already had a whiteboard up showing what showings of Moana and Wicked were sold on Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Saturday. Moana had about 18, Wicked had 10.

No spoilers in my review but it’s long-ish.

Is the sequel perfect like the first film? No. You can tell they edited the tv series into a film as at times there are big narrative pushes (aka like how a tv episode ends on a cliffhanger) but it’s not too distracting. It’s essentially, story wise, a remixed version of what happened in the first movie and that leaves you with a small feeling of, “didn’t we do this in the first movie?” Those are my only complaints.

Otherwise everything else about this is on point 100%. Auli’i delivers another fantastic performance as the heroine. I’m very sad she won’t be the live action Moana because she IS Moana in my heart but I’ll get over it; it gives another girl a shot at the role and more representation.

The visuals are always the strongest point. I saw it in 3D and it just sucks you into those gorgeous blue-turquoise hues of the ocean. The animation does not feel like it was downgraded for TV at all. The songs are good, not great like the first film but we still get catchy songs that will be in your brain for years to come; they just don’t rise to the addictive quality of How Far I’ll Go or Shiny (and I guess You’re Welcome).

No comment on how Dwayne did because I despise him but he’s Maui again and brings his personality to it.

Best part? MORE HEI HEI AND PUA.

Moana 1 had quite an episodic nature too with 'amongst our journey we encounter obstacle/villain 1, 2 and 3' so I could kinda see how it may work here without just feeling a bunch of shorts.

Moana 2 amassed a record-shattering $13.8 million in Tuesday previews, the biggest preview number ever for a Walt Disney Animation title and the second-biggest for any animated film behind sister Pixar’s Incredibles 2 ($18.5 million). That’s quite a feat, considering that the Incredibles sequel opened in the summer. On Tuesday, only 48 percent of schools were out and 20 percent of colleges, per Disney

Moana 2 was kinda of bad nn. That vampire lady being a complete afterthought culminating in her saying she “paid back her debt”(??) in a post credits scene ripped straight from Spider-Man Homecoming(??), the songs being completely forgettable, the “big sis, little sis” moments being the most blatant example of a cloying attempt at Disney relatability I’ve seen in years, one-note side characters that add nothing. I was hoping this would at least be a Frozen 2 moment where I could appreciate them salvaging something from the mess, but this should’ve stayed in the bin. The episodic nature does not work here.

Moana 2 for me was pretty much on par with the first one, for better or worse.

It had very pretty, vibrant colors (I miss color in movies), it was funny (sometimes a little bit too much maybe?), it had some great moments and one amazing song. The fight at the end was quite exciting, the ending scenes were beautiful.
It was very episodic (like the first one). The story had some similarities to Frozen 2 (and that was already a mess). Characters other than Moana didn't get very much development, even though there were many more than in the first movie. Even her own character arc was way less defined than in the first movie. Overall, for me there was little to resonate with emotionally.
Also, very subjective, but I dislike child characters (and they've been portrayed exactly the same in every Disney movie ever since New Groove) and I fear we will be getting more of that from Moana in the future.

Like everything Disney has put out in the last few years (except for maybe Encanto), it felt "nice" but very safe and formulaic. Wonder how long they will be able to coast on past IPs and well-trodden paths. Will the public get fed up with it or is nice but kinda boring familiarity what people want nowadays?

Moana 2 was incredibly mid for me. Some cute moments but even the look of it felt like an afterthought to me. It was great business decision to make this into a movie but I hope the next one has a better script.

I actually really enjoyed Moana 2. Was it as good as the first? No. But i don’t think it’s as bad as what some of the reviews are saying.

There were definitely some parts where i was like “oh this would have been the end of that episode”.

I’ll also be random and say I sat down and watched both Rescuers films and they truly do not get the respect they deserve. Bob Newhart and Eva Gabor truly are magnificent and play off each other so well as Bernard and Miss Bianca.

I could honestly picture those two just saying these lines in person and bantering. Add in her voice performance in The Aristocats and she really was apart of 3 Disney classics.

Rescuers Down Under is exceptional! Definitely an underrated classic. Great location, villain and story.

That's the thing with modern Disney (including Marvel, Star Wars, etc) movies. They seem to be meticulously calculated to be exactly as good as they need to be but not a sliver of an inch more.
In a vacuum, those are serviceable movies. But if put it in context of what's come before and the vast amount of money and creative talent that's behind them... it's almost infuriating to think about why they're not better.

Random but I watched the original Fantasia last night and honestly? It still slaps. Maybe Disney's true masterpiece and can't believe it was made in the 1930s.
Literally the first VHS tape that was in my house. I played it almost every day. The dinosaurs bit scared the shit out of me, but I endured because we had the hippos dancing ballet later (fag, etc.).

I always turned it off before the last piece played because

Fantasia 2000 is cute. And The Firebird is probably the gayest thing Disney has ever done
