Disney

It should be a no brainer now that part 3 will be successful so they should get some better writers for it. (Yes I know sequel mania isn’t the way forward in general). Surely they’ll know that the critical score was the one let down on this and to try to best themselves in that respect.

Everyone knew this was going to be HUGE. Disney didn't need to spend anything marketing this. They could have dropped this without any notice at all and it would have exploded. Moana is consistently one of the most watched movies on Disney+

Absolutely extraordinary numbers. In my opinion, undeserved, but extraordinary nonetheless.

Really? I was convinced this was going to flop.

It’s been a silent streaming juggernaut / babysitting movie for years now. It’s been in the top 10 / 15 streaming movies pretty much every week since Disney plus launched, so pretty much a whole younger generation been brought up on watching Moana on repeat.

At one point it looked like Enchanto would take its place as the staple babysitting movie, but that eventually dropped off the streaming charts and Moana took its place again.

Yeah based just on how consistently the first movie has been in the top 10 streaming charts over the last few years. I'm not sure if it's ever been confirmed but it surely must be the most streamed thing ever on D+, it's a behemoth. The young'uns were always going to eat this up, no matter how poor it was.

EDIT: Yeah, it was actually the most streamed movie on any service for 2023 (11 billion minutes watched) and is Disney+'s most streamed movie ever. Encanto was 2nd in 2023.

I think it’s probably the most streamed movie ever.
There's sadly no definitive list of most streamed movies across all services, outside of the annual lists we have available, but yeah I'd be shocked if you weren't right.

Moana smashing has always been very ??? to me. The sequel’s box office numbers are massive.

The Snow White trailer with Wicked looked aggressively fine. The original song featured did sound like a bop, though. It’ll probably tank, especially given the constant online outrage against Rachel.

I actually really enjoyed Moana 2. Was it as good as the first? No. But i don’t think it’s as bad as what some of the reviews are saying.

There were definitely some parts where i was like “oh this would have been the end of that episode”.

How big is Nicole's role in this?

I feel like they've shot themselves in the foot a bit releasing the live action movie so soon? Feel like we should have had a third and fourth animated movie to see us through for the next few years, and then a live action version a decade down the line. Having them all coming out at the same time will be strange. Will we get a live action of Moana 2 eventually? I guess they just wanted to make it whilst The Rock was the right age.

It's also interesting to me just how much of a 2nd life the original Moana has had on streaming. It did alright in the U.S. (~ $250M run) and I wouldn't have pegged it as basically the tentpole film of Disney+. The sequel basically made the entire U.S. box office run of the first in 5 days.
