Disney

Global will save it but word on the street is the pre sales have been pretty bad domestically. Not really helped across the board with ZERO marketing hook and weirdly self serious trailers

It's not that deep, I just found the idea funny that audiences are turning their backs on easy cash-grabs in favour of...the third movie in a franchise based on a video game where a hedgehog rolls around collecting rings.

I've no intention of seeing either film, but I hope everyone who does has a lovely time!

I mean, the reason why Disney is rather stagnant right now is because they are afraid to do something new. They put too many eggs in one basket versus splitting the budget and doing multiple things, and take some risks. Like, who thought Wish was a good idea? It looked bad, the story was boring, can anyone remember a song from it? They are falling behind other animated films - unable to break from their house style...

All studios are out to make money and turn profits, but Disney feels the most desperate out of any studio. I don't think these mindless cash grabs would be a big deal if they threw in some risk once in a while elsewhere, but it feels like they are terrified of taking the smallest of risks. Obviously the online community who never stops attacking them are partially to blame. Other studios don't have to deal with that as much.

We are in the late-stage capitalism era for Disney where they are making sequels to live-action remakes.

Interesting they appear to be making Snow White a proper musical (with actual singing in the trailer, rare)...
Also interesting, the miners look like pure nightmare fuel, absolutely horrifying in a Cats-esque way to be honest... surely they could have just portrayed them more sensitively and used real little people over CGI.

No, Disney reverted to CGI after Peter Dinklage ranted publicly about how awful it was of Disney to reinforce stereotypes by featuring the dwarfs:

“I was a little taken aback by [the fact] they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White, but you’re still telling the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. You’re progressive in one way but you’re still making that fucking backward story of seven dwarves living in the cave. What the fuck are you doing, man? Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soapbox? I guess I’m not loud enough."

Dinklage wasn’t saying don’t cast people with dwarfism, he was saying don’t rely on old stereotypes etc. And then people attack him as if he’d said the former.

I think they must see the writing on the wall for both Mufasa and Snow White and they'll look to limit losses by slashing the promotional budgets for both. I have barely heard a thing about Mufasa. Truly wild that the previous film opened to nearly $200 million domestically, and this could be looking at a $40-45 million weekend.

Wait sorry. Lion King did $200 million in its opening weekend?

Mufasa flopping and things looking bleak for Snow White should give me hope for some focus back on creativity at Disney but I’m kinda expecting Stitch to pull Lion King numbers, if Disney merch doesn’t have Mickey/Minnie on it probably has Stitch on.
