Do we really need a Random Thoughts thread? Thoughts.

passionoia has (for some reason) decided to close the Random Thoughts thread, and has also asked us a question regarding whether or not it should even exist. I figure it is only right that we answer this question in a civilised manner, and perhaps passionoia could fill us in as to what exactly has brought this on in the process. I'm concerned.

In my opinion, yes we do. It is the perfect thread to post those little discussions and comments that don't deserve their own topics, and a good way for people to keep up with each other. if I wanted to talk about the events of my day it would be egotistical of me to create a new topic, but Random Thoughts is the ideal location.

Also, pop music is something we are all passionate about, and tempers can flare, or things can be misunderstood. The Random Thoughts thread is a great way to find out that the person you argued about Lady Gaga in 'Pop & Justice' with for six pages is actually a very nice chap after all.

I'd love to know what everyone else thinks.

We do. It's the heart and soul of PJ, where we all just catch up. He closed it seemingly on a whim, instead of actually moderating any conversations he felt were out of order.

Just like any other thread, conversation can easily lead to controversy - so I don't think Random Thoughts should play the scapegoat and be deleted. Just crack the whip a bit more when necessary.

Since this will inevitably just become Random Thoughts 2.0:

Damian Lewis is so hot.

I have to say I much preferred Popjustice when the moderators operated mostly in the background and only stepped in when things got out of hand. There's been a lot of rule changes in recent years and I think sometimes too much emphasis is put on following these religiously, when sometimes all that's needed is a gentle nudge to keep everyone on the straight and narrow.

Can someone pm me what happened? I kind of understand closing it actually. Things have been going way too far on here for a while, from being being overly cunty to certain members, and then there's the massively too much information sex talk which seems to go on on a daily basis now.

Can Peter just post a proper a list of Forum Rules somewhere please - it's all well and good to say 'Behave like grown-ups' but grown-ups can call a fictional soap character 'a bitch' and not be reprimanded like schoolchildren for it. There are many other notable grey areas that need to be scpecifically addressed once and for all and maybe then people would know what's acceptable and what's not and whether or not they should be expected to be banned for certain behaviour, rather it being at the discretion of the mod at hand, which appears to be the method in use at the moment.

Also, more mods please because Someboy feat. passionoia and Mvnl isn't really cutting it.

There was this big "The Day the Laugher Died" quarrel a few years ago, involving many leading lights, including Mr PJ himself, and a main focus was whether Off-topic topics should be allowed to go off topic. The general consensus seemed to have been that they shouldn't. That whatever topic the thread-starter had decided on should be adhered to, because otherwise things often just descended into something really messy and time-wasting.

It was a year or so after this that the Random Threads thread was started by Bailey, and it has worked as a solution to this problem, I think. An off-off-topic place where things can be aired because we're civilised enough to deal with it. Not that I've followed it most of the time, who has time for that? but it doesn't seem to have attracted too much confrontational behaviour - certainly less than Suga and Gaga threads, for example.

Of course moderators must be wary of it. But that's a problem in common with all off-topic sections of all fora in the world. A forum attracts people with a shared interest, and off-topic is just the opposite of that. So the expertise with the shared interest won't be there, and hence the quality of the moderating must somehow be lower.

So yes, I wouldn't be happy of Random Thoughts disappeared.

Like I've already said a little reminder every now and then would make sense instead of waiting for the bathtub to overflow and then pulling the plug. It's not a good way to do things.

innamor.

The forum has a social arm as much as it is a discussion place of pop music, which exists in Random Thoughts. Surely closing it would cut off a lot of 'getting to know each other'-ness?

Closing the Random Thoughts thread is a ridiculous idea. Why was it closed I can't see any odd comments!

How are we meant to be able to talk about Julie Birchill one minute, snatching wigs the next minute and then our favourite colour the next?

Bring back BOYS/GIRLS/WHATEVER!

Minus the pornstars.

Yet more threads that were suddenly completely deleted for no apparent reason.

Basically we need a set of rules and a set of mods who actually know what the rules are, rather than having a vague memory of some rule about gifs and a 'delete first, ignore questions later' attitude.
